Always Getting Attack in Quickplay

I haven’t seen people talk about this so I’m curious: Does anyone else ONLY ever get Defense during Quickplay?

There are entire nights where when I’m playing with my friend, 10 games will legit all be defense in a row (if there’s 10 payload games). On a good night, we’ll maybe get attack 2-3 times out of 10.

What sparked me to finally make this thread is we legit started leaving every Defense, Push, or KOTH map just to see how long it would take for the game to put us on attack and we ended up logging off for the night because it NEVER did.

We legit entered maybe 20 payload games and the game never put us on attack a single time. This seems like some account-based bug or something (cause obviously someone else has to be on offense) but I swear to God I never get Attack.

it’s random… but also a little skewed to give you unpopular matches… Think of it this way: If you don’t like playing defence and other people don’t like playing defence and yall just keep leaving on defence then trying to re-Q then everyone including you are more likely to back fill into defence / losing games lol. Quick play sucks : )

You came to competitive for answers… The answer is play competitive and you will always get to attack : )

I am mainly a comp player, I know that.

Whenever I want to practice a new hero or play with console friends though, naturally I resort to quickplay.

Also, 99% of these games I get thrown into are not backfill, so its not leavers causing thisnto happen either. Normally I get put in a game at the hero selection screen with the full timer duration meaning these are completely fresh games.

I’m almost sure the ratio of defense and attack are based on their deviation and your current win percentile, devs said something with those lines in the past, that defense have slightly higher winning odds than attack. The game will try to make you play in situations to align your initial winning odds lean towards 50%.

Often folks who have better winning odds are placed on attack while on defense the crowd with less. At least is a “pattern” due defense having a bit better winning rates than attack ones. So, you actually leaving defense matches actually makes you play more defense games.

9 out of 10 ill get defense if not ill get ilios for the 9 millionth time.

As far as we know it’s just random

Bonjour. There are so many times where I play and either get put into the roulette of Push and Control maps or the 9000th payload defense. At one point, I was leaving games until I got a round on attack and it took like 30 minutes to get one (1) single round of attack after I had already been playing for hours.

I wish there was more of a system in place to prevent huge streaks of a single type of play. I don’t mind defending, but standing in one spot on a payload or objective for 12 rounds in a row is just not my idea of a good time.

Not exactly. The game itself tries to put you one match at attack and another on defense. But due folks leaving matches, queues and mmr all over the place the system can’t do that often.

So, it tries to put you on maps at the side that could give you better initial winning odds that lean towards 50%. All maps have a variance between winning and losing odds, often defense having higher ones due those modes on the last point defenders having less time to reach the objective/payload, also due it’s map layout. Which is why push and control maps are good maps for them due being symmetric on planning, not having any sort of deviation.

Assault, hybrid and escort had/had deviations. In the past the outliers were horizon(for attackers 54%ish) and eichenwalde(for defenders 53%ish) while the rest were about 49ish to attack and 50ish for defense. With some few exceptions with 50,20 on attack and 49,80 on defense.

At 2017, roughly 51% wins were on defense.
Hanamura: Attack 49.79%, Defense 50.21%
Horizon: Attack 54.50%, Defense 45.50%
Temple of Anubis: Attack 49.92%, Defense 50.08%
Volskaya: Attack 49.76%, Defense 50.24%
Eichenwalde: Attack 46.13%, Defense 53.87%
Hollywood: Attack 49.91%, Defense 50.09%
King’s Row: Attack 50.14%, Defense 49.86%
Numbani: Attack 49.40%, Defense 50.60%
Dorado: Attack 49.66%, Defense 50.34%
Route 66: Attack: 49.94%, Defense 50.06%
Watchpoint: Gibraltar: Attack 50.13%, Defense 49.87%

Considering that we only have right now, without updated data:
Eichenwalde: Attack 46.13%, Defense 53.87%
Hollywood: Attack 49.91%, Defense 50.09%
King’s Row: Attack 50.14%, Defense 49.86%
Numbani: Attack 49.40%, Defense 50.60%
Dorado: Attack 49.66%, Defense 50.34%
Route 66: Attack: 49.94%, Defense 50.06%
Watchpoint: Gibraltar: Attack 50.13%, Defense 49.87%

If the value somewhat still holds true, although the maps got more cover and stuff like that. We don’t know the current value.

On perfect conditions folks would play against the same folks alternating between attack and defense on each map. I had some matches like that in the past, but if someone leaves the queue, match or had their mmr changed the chain gets interrupted. In the past I had about 8 matches in a row against and with same folks, alternating between attack, defense on assault, hybrid and escort while having some control maps in the middle of it. The winning odds on those matches were actually similar. Team were well balanced also and the matchmaker tried to mix and match the players on that loop. After 8 matches the chain was broken. Similarly happened on about 3-4 matches somewhat frequently for me in the past also. Always alternating between attack/defense on hybrid/escort/assault and followed by another one or control.

thanks for these stats, i’ve actually wondered for years how close to 50/50 the win rates were for def vs att

Yes. And I hate defense and love attacking. It sucks. I know youre encouraged to stay so the maps will mirror next round, but it never does. It always swaps to koth or push.

Its worse when playing certain gamemodes in arcade. Because arcade is stupid about not auto queuing you will never get mirror maps when queueing for 2cp or payload only.

I can’t remember the last time I started on a attack side. Honestly I start on defense so much that it just became the norm

Seems random to me, but since defense is pretty miserable in QP, you probably remember those more often.

if you are on defense… you probably play in a match with 5 other attacking players on the other side. no?

…some players prefer attack (especially those that main heroes that are better on attack) and, as you started doing, leave defense games causing players to ‘seem’ like they play defense more…

I’ve not only gotten the same side in multiple matches in a row in QP, but I’ve also gotten the same side on the same map in back-to-back matches. But don’t worry, I prefer a limited map pool. I know so because Team 5 told me I prefer it.
