After 240 hours, I still can't find a main

So I’ve been playing Overwatch for 240 hours now and can’t decide on a main. I want to be able to play two characters from each class so I can fill in qp and comp, but also do want to have someone to put most of my time and practice into. I was wondering if anyone could help me choose a hero.

I can’t aim very well (I never go for head shots but can still do fine in qp as McCree, etc.) so I’ve mostly focused on supports and characters with AoE attacks.

I can play every support beside zenyatta fairly well to the point that i’m confident enough to play them all in competitive (With Moira being my go-to, her raw healing output and ability to stay alive and finish off low health targets is insane).

For DPS I find Bastion, McCree, Pharah and Doomfist to be the most fun. My internet isn’t great though so there’s always a 300ms pause whenever I punch with doomfist, and as I said earlier I really cant aim well enough to play McCree properly. Symmetra is also fun every now and then since properly using her turrets is really satisfying.

Tanks are probably the most promising at the moment for me. Winston is really fun (when you have decent support…) and I can do really well with him in QP but struggle in placements and platinum due to healers having no spacial awareness half the time and Zaria/zenyatta’s seemingly not using team chat. Orisa is also fairly enjoyable, though a little boring since your mostly popping your shield down and staying behind it. Roadhog is also fun because of his hook but I don’t feel confident enough with being able to reliably hit hooks to play him in comp.

So is there any heroes out of that list that you think would work well for me? If you want any more info, then please ask. Any help or constructive criticism would be appreciated!

I played this game for 4000h and i am still swaping my main.
Just play whatever floats you.
But dotn throw.

Sincerly Hamen

i would say hog tbh, as long as you are hitting 50% of your hooks you are doing your job, he is actually pretty good atm however if you dont feel confident enough with his hooks get into a private match with a friend and have them play pharah and try to hook her out of the sky and then get them to play tracer and try to hook tracer that will help your accuracy a lot

It’s best not to have a main. If you’ve been playing that long and really enjoy several heroes, keep up the practice on all of them. Truly flexing will always be more valuable to your team than maining something.

You don’t need “A main” per say, but don’t try to flex to the entire cast, feel free to specialize on a Role, while still being able to play something else.

It’s more about the Hero Pool than about the Main. Get a few heroes your confortable with, and stick with them unless another pick is absolutely necessary.

I can give you 2 advices:

  1. You must not have a main. Flex are good and have a place in OW
  2. If you really want to have a main, chose the one you have more fun with. No?

I generally get 75%-ish in QP and 40% in competitive. Might play him a bit more and see if I can get better!

you see. you just pick the waifu(s).

Dont fill and its fine if you change your main a lot but if you dont hit master + its totaly normal

As I said, i’m going to focus on at least 2 characters from every class and mostly have a main for cosmetics and qp. I would pick the most fun character (probably D.va or widowmaker honestly) except I’m horrible at them

Torb, put the turret in weird places and trigger the enemies by hammering them

On a serious note: You don’t need to have a single main, Winston is probably not a great hero to start maining right now since bunker is becoming meta. Roadhog is a decent option, just practice hitting the hooks and remember to take a step forward before firing so that you kill people more consistently.

Good point about the bunker comp. Even in QP it’s becoming harder to play him because of bastions and orisa.

even 40% isnt bad but a lot of it depends on if you are hitting the right targets, but as others have said there is nothing wrong with not having a main but i do think roadhog can be a pretty reliable main

I mean… Your not wrong…

Its actually the best you can do in the game is to not main a hero or even a hero role. You will have a lot more fun in this game if you dont only like one hero or only dps.
Bad internet connection
There are alot of heroes that are forgiving if you have bad connection, bad aim or bad fps. it depends if you have lagg spikes or consistent higher ping.
For example ana is still playable if you have a consistent high ping but with lagg spikes your nade, sleepdart or nano wont go off sometimes.
mccree and tracer are probably the worst heroes you can chose with bad internet.
moira, mercy, rein, brig, winston are probably your best choices.

If you wanne be successful in this game:
A support main should be able to play atleast half the supports and atleast one main and one off-healer.
As a main tank player you should be able to play every main tank and atleast one offtank.
As a dps player you should be able to play hitscan, if needed. But dps is the hardest role to carry your team with.

If you wanne be succuessful in ranked how ever you should be able to play/carry your team with one hero in each role atleast.

If you main/onetrick a hero you have to be really really good with this hero. That even if the enemy team is countering you, you still be able to carry. On some heroes its even harder to do so. Also in ranked you will reach a point where you not good enough with this hero and if you not able to swap if needed, you wont climb anymore.

Main more heroes, my most played is still Genji but i have 100h on other 5 heroes and 50+ on another 5+ heroes each.

I can play over 10 heroes at Masters rank and i think thats great.

Due to all maining i won my first gauntlet deathmatch by 14 kills because iam familiar with almost everyone.

But if you want to main just one… go for it if thats your wish.

On top of that you can counter enemies easier because you know how these characters play etc. Genji is my most played and Genji in enemy team is also one of my least feared heroes, i just read his different playstyles too good after all this time. So maining more helps in general.

ill just echo what has been said here:

if you want to just have fun…no main

if you only care for ranked then yes but only because you will end up being better on that one character…not because you cant play ranked that way

but theres something about the latter that kinda goes against the spirit of the game…devs have even spoken about this before…but the whole point of the game is to adapt to things on the fly as they are presented to you…and limiting yourself to one character kinda ruins that…

After 240 hours of learning each hero weakness and strength, I can’t find a main

Working as intended

OW is not a “main” type game, because when pushed to their limits, they all have a particular utility. Which is why switching during match is allowed. It’s made by design from the very start

I probably should of mentioned that my bad connection isn’t a ping issue (I get 50ms consistently), but instead is more about packet loss. I don’t really know how networking works but the orange symbols for packet loss and the other one that I’m not sure about are almost always displayed.

Not having a main is the best thing that can happen to you. You get more enjoyment out of the game in that way.
