Advanced tutorial/strategy learning mode|@OverwatchDevs

Hello,

In my opinion, the vast majority of players (casual or not) do not understand what they are supposed to do and, in particular, they do not want to understand when they are making a valuable play or not (and this behavior is fine as long as they respect the Code of Conduct and the Blizzard EULA).

However, for others like me who want to understand what to do to bring their team to victory, I feel like they could need some more help.

That is why, I would love Blizzard to implement some advanced/updated tutorial mode to the game where they explain a bit more about the intended strategy of the game (flanks/rotations/what is feeding and why is this ā€œbadā€ for your team?/etc.). The actual tutorial (same tutorial since 2016 release…) is very poor and obsolete to be fair. You only learn the very basic mechanics of the game. It does not mention a single thing about game modes or potential strategies.

I really want to make a better gameplay experience for all players and eventually prevent them from feeding unintentionally (but only if they want to; this tutorial should not be not a prerequisite to play the game).

I really think a new advanced tutorial will be useful for all kind of players (except maybe for very new players who never played a FPS before) and will probably bring back some more thought and genuine interest about the game (especially for the players I pointed at in my first sentence).

I am sure this will also help players who want to implement strategies in a competitive team environment (in OWCS for example), as well as in competitive mode.

Well, I would just like to know how to contact the game design team in DM to share my in-depth ideas about this new tutorial.

I think this would largely be a waste of dev resources. There are countless online guides and tutorials explaining this stuff for anyone who cares to spend 2 minutes looking it up outside the game.

I also dont think tutorials is suddenly going to be some kind of ā€œahah!ā€ moment for most players, and they will continue to play the same way they always do anyway. Explaining the concept of objectives, teamwork, flankers, rotations, etc isn’t suddenly going to make the tank stop overextending trying to chase the kill they want.

Exactly, this is what YT and coaching is for.

Your heart is in the right place OP, this wouldn’t necessarily be a bad addition… but it also brings to mind the old saying ā€œyou can lead a horse to waterā€¦ā€ Aka, just because the resources are there, doesn’t mean casual players will have any interest in it, so I dont know that the devs would waste the time. After all, there’s a reason they’re called ā€˜casual’ players, and that is not an insult. I’m one of them!

I feel I know the game fairly well, but that’s just a side effect of time played, and not because I sat down and ā€˜studied’ the game or made meaningful efforts to improve. I just learned as I played. To which you might ask:

ā€œwhy though… don’t you want to get better at the game faster?ā€

Not necessarily… if I only play QP, I dont want to feel like I’m ā€˜falling short’ because I’m not perfectly executing some strategy I learned online, that detracts from my fun, it doesnt bring any added enjoyment.

ā€œso you’re happy being bad at the game?ā€

No, I’m just happy learning at my own pace and allowing the knowledge to slowly seep in through repeated exposure, rather than treating it as if I’m cramming for an exam the next day

10 years and the game still cant explain what the stupid orange hp does

uh? explain the game would be a waste? do what they promised would be a waste? what developers are even doing? what they are working for? skins?

Thanks for your answers guys.
You are all very insightful.
You are right.
I guess it is too risky for Blizzard to invest money in a new polished tutorial when they can confortably sell more skins and battle passes.
This is just making me sad and angry that the gameplay and the competitiveness are not what keep most players interested in the game (even for those who play a so-called ā€œcompetitiveā€ mode).

I’m going to give a bunch of 10 year old kids baseball equipment and tell them to go play baseball.

I’m not going to teach them anything about what a short-stop is, a pitcher or what a foul ball is. Or how to steal third.

They can go consult a guide on youtube or the internet that for that information.

See above.

I don’t think I would word it that way – this isnt about skins, it’s about other features. If the devs investment resources into a feature like this, it means they cant put those resources into other things. For example, if we imagine this is something they did for Season 18, it could mean that in exchange for these advanced tutorials, we may not be getting the new progression system.

So the question is, would this bring more value to players than a different feature? The answer is probably no. Most players dont invest much time playing tutorials, and for those that do, there is an enormous wealth of content and resources outside the game to do what you are asking.

This is such a disingenuous counter example I honestly dont even know where to begin addressing it. These scenarios are so unimaginably dissimilar.

I was hoping the PvE would act like a mini tutorial. Too bad thats scrapped. I remember an archive mission showing me how well a Mercy could work with a Genji/Winston back when I knew nothing about the game.

Other than it being a waste of dev resources, I think the philosophy Blizz has held since 2016, is that without a tutorial - you’re going to find your own way to play the game, which breeds more creativity.

Depending on who you ask, a competitive environment might be something that drives them away. I think that is part of the problem OW is dealing with right now… they’re bending over backwards trying to please too many different crowds.

When this game was released it didn’t take long for it to become competitive, and the devs started catering to that crowd.

However, sometime around OW2’s launch, many (perhaps newer) players started bemoaning the competitive environment, saying they didn’t like it, and found much more enjoyment buying skins and essentially playing dress up with their favorite heroes. As that crowd grew, overwatch has become less competitive, and more of a social thing, almost like a digital 3rd space of sorts. Alongside that, Blizz was taking notes from Rivals and seeing that you dont have to be a hyper competitive game to maintain engagement.

So if you’re just here for the social aspect and the skins, hopping on and seeing a big ā€œadvanced strategies and competitive tutorialā€ guide might make you think ā€œoh, this is a hyper competitive game? I’m not interested in that, I’ll play something elseā€ which Blizz doesn’t want, they want to keep the people who are happy to buy skins around.

Just speaking for myself as more of a competitive player, I don’t buy skins, I’ve no interest in them what so ever. I’m sure I’m not the only one in that boat. Why would blizz care to cater to players like me when I’m open about not spending money on their product?
