Add a “Flank” category in hero selection

Im really not sure why all those heroes are lumped together into damage. I know there used to be a defense category and they got rid of it which is good but why is there no flank?

Tracer and soldier do not belong in the same role at all. What ends up happening is that because people dont know how to play many teams will have two or even three straight up damage heroes (soldier bastion widowmaker for ex) without any flanks on the team

And then if i switch from tank or healer to go flank instead since we dont have one, no one switches to my previous role to cover it so its a lose lose no matter what we’re always missing a crucial role

So the game must solve this problem by making it clear to everyone that flank is a necessary role by adding in a new category that splits up the damage heroes. Right now a lot of people seem to think oh all dps heroes are the same i can pick any of them and we’ll have all the roles covered. Wrong

Heroes that belong in flank category: doomfist, genji, reaper, sombra, tracer

Blizzard can decide what other heroes (if any) they want to put in the flank category but what is abundantly clear is that the game desperately needs one because so many people are unaware that having a flank on your team is just as important as having a damage hero

Because then people will yell YOUR ON THA FLANK HERO WHY RNT U FLANKING>?!?!?!

Just like they used to say TORB IS DEFENSE WTH R U DOING On ATTACK???

What do they do? Damage.
In what category they are? Damage.

I agree that eliminating the defense category was silly, but adding flank as a category when defense makes a lot more sense than it? It is just extra silly.

How to better utilize a hero should just be something players learn on their own.

Ps: If Roadhog has to share a category with Reinhardt, then Tracer and Genji can and should share a category with Soldier and Widowmaker.

Lemme get this straight. You are saying they shouldnt add in something that would obviously be good for the game because you dont want to get yelled at? Lol ok

And by the way that goes for every role so it really isnt a strong argument. You can just as easily get yelled at for not healing or not pushing payload as a tank its all the same. Not a reason whatsoever to prevent this from being in the game

If it accidentally makes the game more toxic, its not a good thing to add. If people dont know that the hero they are playing should be flanking then they obviously dont care much for Overwatch anyway.

And Mercy should be healing, Reaper doesnt have to flank at all times he can move in behind a reinhardt

Ok first of all, we dont agree. What i said was actually that eliminating the defense category was a good thing for the game.

Secondly, if you honestly believe tracer (flank) and widowmaker (damage) perform the same function and are both pure dps then that is absolutely appalling

You know whats really silly? Pretending two things are the same when clearly they’re not. Next time you play widow try getting behind the enemy team and flanking the whole match

Next time you play tracer try staying in the back behind your tanks and see how much “top damage” you can put out since they’re the same right? If they’re the same you should be able to play one like the other and have just as much success doing it however you want right? LOL

I would prefer them to categorize heroes by their actual roles in the team.

  • Main tank
  • Off tank
  • Hitscan DPS
  • Flex/Projectile DPS
  • Main support
  • Off suport

Adding a “Flank” category wouldn’t really do anything to improve the game imo.

Ps: wrong again see my previous comment for why

Yeah but you don’t ALWAYS play these heroes to flank. Flanking is not a crucial role in a team composition the same way that defense wasn’t a crucial role. In fact, Tracer is the only one out of these where I would say flanking is generally the optimal strategy. Reaper still hardly has the mobility to get in and out of fights easily, plus he’s easy to hear coming. Doomfist is not a flanker so much as he is a dive assassin / disruptor. Even then, he’s really good when played as a tank counter or a brawler. Genji doesn’t get much value out of flanking, ever since the introduction of Brigitte and tank heavy comps being so prevalent right now. He’s almost always best used as a blade bot. Sombra I guess flanks people to get into good positions for hacks, but I’d still consider her more of a utility DPS instead of a flanker.

At the end of the day, all these heroes are responsible for doing damage. When you pick one, you’re signing up to do damage and get kills. Damage is a broad category sure, but I don’t think adding a new “defense” category is necessary.

Right right right. So based on this logic, they should remove hero roles altogether and not categorize any of them so the playerbase can learn on their own how to better utilize each hero correct?

Why put any of them in a box and label them its a waste of time just stick them all together and let people figure it out that sounds great right?

If you think Genji is a flanker you are definitely playing him wrong… The correct positioning with him is near the team but at an off angle, NOT in the enemies backline. The only flankers in the game are Tracer, Sombra and Reaper. That is not nearly enough characters to justify an entire role to them.

Reaper is not a flanker either. At least not at levels where people can hear his footsteps.

It’s not, and the best flankers are currently the dive tanks and Lucio.

I dont play much genji but lets say theres a bastion in the back. You’re telling me genji is not the one thats supposed to go in behind him and flank? Of course he is because he has deflect one of the best counters for bastion its his job

They are not the only flankers in the game
Even if they were, it is still enough to justify an entire role for them, because so many people seem to be unaware that it even exists. If you dont stick it in their face and make it obvious that this is a crucial role then many people will not even think about it.

Right now tons of teams i play on dont have a flanker, and this is in comp where people are supposed to know how to play the game properly. Also to your last point, they can just add flanks into the game over time and eventually there will be more not a big deal you have to start somewhere.

yikes buddy that is definitely not the right way to beat a bastion comp. Maybe learn how the game actually works before proposing your useless ideas.

Whether or not thats the right way to beat a bastion is not the point of my idea. One thing has nothing to do with the other. So if you want to focus on that then your comment is completely useless, not my idea because you havent said anything to actually counter my idea

The best way to deal with a bastion and whether or not blizzard should add in a flank category are not related. The fact is that flanks exist in this game, it is a crucial role and people dont pick flanks which messes up the game. Nice try though thanks for the useless comment

Yes I can certainly tell you dont play much Genji because of how misinformed your reply was. I am a mid-masters dps player with Genji in my top 3 most played characters. He is not a flanker, he is meant to play at an off angle to the tanks. Also he isnt a very good counter to bastion, and you seemed to insinuate that a balanced team comp generally needs a flanker? Not sure if thats what you were meaning but that is just dead wrong.

Great im glad your knowledge about genji is so informed i really dont care. Lets say for arguments sake that you are correct about genji, and lets say for arguments sake you are also right that a balanced team comp does not need a flanker. Even then my idea is still a good one

Are there certain characters in the game that you would consider flanks? Are there certain characters that blizzard would consider flanks? The answer is yes (that is not debatable) and therefore they deserve their own category in the hero selection screen because they serve a purpose that is completely different from your actual dps like ashe hanzo soldier

And dont come back with something lame like there are only a small number of flanks in the game so they dont deserve their own category. Yes they do, their function is not the same that must be recognized and they can add more into the game over time
