Activision Destroys XLabs

Man, Activision just loves to swim in hot water.
You think they would relax for atleast a few weeks before making another drastic decision.

What is X Labs?

I would like to know as well.

Basically community run servers in a nutshell

It sucks for whoever is involved; at the same time, it’s pretty expected that a company doesn’t want their IP used outside of their control.

Remember kids, google is your friend.

They did the same with WoW and launched classic so no surprises there.

The frustrating part for these people, and I’m not a CoD fan myself but these are basically the only way to play these older titles. The only reason they exist is because support for them is ceased. So if Activision wont support them and starts sending legal Cease and Desists to community projects which keep them afloat then well…

Or the person posting something unrelated to OW on the OW forums can merely provide some context.

I’m fully capable of using google, but I can also ask OP for context so that everyone else who doesnt know doesnt also have to google it.

If they are doing it just now maybe they are planning to launch something similar and are making sure the competition is eliminated first.

Doubtful. Pretty sure they are just entirely abandoned projects unless they are ready to make active servers and updates and do live service work for like ten games.

So, in all fairness, the reason is because it’s Activision. and the reason I am sharing is because they are taking an active legal action and watchful eye of their communities. In this case, for fan related content. It’s related to the company that runs Overwatch and could become a problem for the Overwatch community in some kind of way down the line if they are deciding to lawyer up for stricter reasons against their communities.

Maybe are launching a “reforge” for one of those and want to redirect the traffic to it.

Possibly. We will have to see, but the chances are unlikely.

Thats understandable and I’m not calling it an inappropriate post or anything. But I’m near positive 99% of people on the OW forums have literally no clue what this is. Having context with your post avoids literally everyone needing to google what youre referring to, and will improve discussion on the topic. Most people will just ignore the topic if they dont know what youre referring to.

This is just an assumption.
I assumed this was going to blow up in the coming days and be more relevant. I figured if I made a long thread description trying to explain what a non-Overwatch project would be meaningful, it also wouldn’t be read. This is more like a post to show that something is starting and it’s possible whatever this is will grow worse in the coming weeks. Possibly. I wouldn’t be surprised if an Overwatch streamer hadn’t already mentioned this news yet.

Why not? They surely knew about it before. There has to be something that has provoked them to do it. It happened with Classic.

Even T2 ran after the GTA modders before they launched the “remastered” trilogy.

Maybe instead of shutting down those titles, they could see why people are playing them instead of their newer games, and improve them?

But noooooo, that would be too pro consumer.

It is, but I dont think it’s an unreasonable one. I’d be willing to bet the vast majority of gamers have probably never even used mods, let alone know about some unofficial standalone mods adding support for call of duty clients that arent that widely played anymore.

If they went after X Labs, they are probably about to tackle a whole lot more in the coming days since there are tons of different fan projects for different titles.

Oh, also, looks like Samito is the first to fume about this.

Maybe, like WoW, they’ll bring back the classics…

Who am I kidding.
