Accessibility for Visually Impaired

I didn’t know where to put this as I didn’t see a General Feedback type forum, so here I suppose is fine…Move if needed =)

Yesterday, Jeff Kaplan, was streaming live with ohnickel over on Facebook and I extended my thanks on making Overwatch playable for those with Visual Impairments. He went on to say, they wish to make more improvements to help those with visual impairments and hearing impairments , be able to play the game easier.

I am 90 percent blind and on a good day do pretty decent at the game. I am normally a PS4 player, but will be buying this for PC today actually Hype

There are definitely some improvements that could be made dealing with font, font colors and some of the color blind mode options (I have the rare color blindness of green and blue…and some browns haha I can’t tell a difference)

I wouldn’t mind helping the lovely Blizzard team with adding more features for us mostly blind folks but where would I go about submitting these things? Should I just toss it all up on the forum? Is there a super special handshake I need to get it in front of them?

I’m really new to the PC Overwatch scene…started yesterday hehe

Thank you all kindly =)

and remember #BlindGamerAwareness

I think posting here on the forums is mostly all you can do. While they don’t often respond directly, they definitely poke around here every now and then.

I’ve seen a fair number of my posted suggestions make it into the game in some form, although there’s no way to really know whether they initially got the ideas from my posts or came up with them separately.

Hey there! Blind gamers represent, yo! XD (I’m legally blind myself - 20/200 vision with nystagmus and some other issues). Nice to meet ya!

As for your question:

Yep, posting on the forums is probably your best bet.

I posted on the WoW forums a few years ago asking for outlines around quest objectives instead of the hard-to-see sparkles. And I don’t know if my suggestion actually caused it or not, but they did add outlines a few months later. Could be a coincidence, but who knows? So yeah, forums ftw. XD

Anyway, it seriously is so cool to hear about other visually impaired people who play. I’ve met a few others so far… One day all of us should group up and play some games. XD “The blind leading the blind.” :stuck_out_tongue:

A pleasure to digitally meet you =)

Yes we should definitely play sometime.

My times are odd between my Mod duties on FB and my Streaming but I know I can make time for ya =)

As a hearing impaired player myself, I was so happy when he mentioned that side of things too.

Cone-Rod Dystrophy at around 20/100. Not tragic but not pleasant. I feel this thread.

They’ve done some great things with the game for visual accessibility and, aside from some inconsistencies with the colorblind mode, all of them have been great. My personal favourite is that most character weapons relay similar information from the HUD. For example the crystal on Sombra’s gun changes colour and hue as the ammo goes down and Soldier’s rifle will change colour when Helix Rocket is off cooldown. It’s a great way to know what’s going on if you have trouble focusing on the edges of your screen.

Additionally there are a lot of great subtle audio cues in the game. Orisa, for example, when continuously firing the pitch of the sound effects will rise a bit as the ammo pool empties.

I may not always give Blizzard a ton of credit but if they say they’re working on visual/audio accessibility I fully believe them. They have done great great work so far in these areas.

I think they should make the outlines of enemy heroes more pronounced. With glasses I have 20/20 vision and I still often don’t see Widowmakers standing in plain sight far away in some window. I can only imagine how that must suck for visually impaired players.
