Abusive chat report option is trash

I recently bullied Zen in duo on Paris B def as Genji. I did 3k with blade. Then Zen typed on chat “dragon blade is such a noob ult lol”. I replied with simple “NO U”. After match I wrote “gg” and returned to menu. Suddenly game informed me that I got suspended from chat for 7 days and my endorsement level gone from 4 to 0. I immediately checked email and appealed. Support answered that they will not revoke the penalty. They didnt even quote which my message on chat had broken rules.

Note: Im not that type of guy who tells people to go to kitchen and make sandwiches after hearing women on VC or writes nword. I just get mad at this game really often. (almost every match)

Receiving 0 heal as tank in QP? That is normal. Duo having same low lvls? That is normal. People playing music on VC? That is normal. Stupid balance so 200 pros can have better meta? That is normal. Leavers every match? That is normal. Dying every 40 seconds? That is normal. Refilling leavers every match? That is normal. I am angry on people doing 1shot combos and low skill floor heroes (hogs, junks, pharahs, hanzos, widows, ashes, sigmas, dps moiras, sombras and turrets). I often tell them on chat to stop and let me play the game. But the then they report me for “abusive chat”. Main problem of it is that I cant see what messages they reported in “abusive chat” warning, but its not the only one.

The other problem is way more interesting. As you may know Blizzard promotes diversity. Meanwhile warning screen: “Your recent communication behaviour is not how most Overwatch players communicate”. So thats way how Blizzard promotes variety? I will just make this quote simpler: “People just dont agree with what you typed on chat”. And this is reason why people are banned? You dont have to break rules to be silenced?

Another problem: You dont have to type a single message on chat to be able to be reported and this doesnt end on “abusive chat” report option. You can go to LFG and report random guy for for example cheating.

Solution:

  1. Dont report player for “abusive chat”, but directly messages he sends.
  2. If player gets enough of these reports, he is shown warning screen with his messages which got reported.
  3. Dont allow players to send messages that are reported often. (globally)
    Example: nword is reported often by players. Nword is getting written into dictionary with prohibited messages. Next people trying to type nword on chat will get notification that their message wasnt send because it was reported globally by many players.
  4. Pray that someone from OW team reads this and will add it into game.

Based on your starting statement, it sounds like your penalty is justified. Just because someone said an abusive comment about you is NOT justification to be abusive back. Furthermore, a single match is unlikely to result in a silence for disruptive behavior in Overwatch. If you have already appealed that means Blizzard Customer Service has reviewed your account and determined there is a pattern of disruptive behavior when you play the game. Please refer to the full Blizzard Code of Conduct for the expectations we all have when playing Blizzard games.

I don’t think “NO U” is a very abusive comment, more like a childish remark. Sounds like you wanna be “that guy” who patronizes everyone.

While I don’t agree with other parts of the OP, I agree with him that the Abusive Chat report button is abused A TON.

It’s kinda funny how in every single one of these threads, you’ll eventually find from the OP a line that basically says, “I say all sorts of mean and nasty things, I have no self-control when it comes to what I say out loud over a video game. Why did I get in trouble?”

You’re not a victim of report abuses, you’re just getting punished for an attitude you yourself admit take into every game. You can try and wormlogic your way around it, but that’s almost certainly the reason why you got silenced. It has nothing to do about “people just don’t agree with what you typed on chat,” and has far more to do about how you choose to interact with other people consistently.

Just calm down when you play this game. Take a breath and hold your tongue if you’ve got only mean things to say. Heck, I get mad too and every dozen or so games, I probably end up saying something mean towards someone – never been punished though, because it isn’t a regular thing I do in every game.

Well yeah I feel like that report option gets abused (haha ironic) a lot. We’re not in kindergarten anymore come on, a little bit of trash talk here and there can’t be so bad.
However racist, or very targeted bullying (eg raging over one’s main hero, sexuality etc.) comments should always be reported.

Sure it is abused, false reports exist but then again, you dont get suspended 7 days for one instance … this guy has an “easy” time throwing stuff in the chat or VC for sure.

My bet is this is the 50th time or something like that and he has been suspended before 2 times, for 24h and for 72h … otherwise it would not be 7 days.

You get a warning before any action is taken against your account, and even the warning is after repeated offenses. Clearly the problem lies with you here…

Now I actually agree with some of your solutions to the report system; they’re quite good, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to work on your behaviour (I know, that’s a very pretentious and condescending phrase, but I can’t think of another right now). Take your anger out on a pillow or something if you have to. Mute the chat. Just ignore irritating people, or leave swears out of your exchanges.

listen. I will tell you because I know first hand.

I’m a guy who can be snarky but my snarkiness ends up at stuff like “nice lucio” and so on. I’m never toxic, or racist.

I’ve got banned for Abusive Chat a lot of times. Very often I don’t care too much, but mostly I play this game A LOT (I’m a masters/GM player also at which rank you need to play the game regularly to be good).

You know how the reporting system works? It’s automated buddy. If I queue support in Masters, and someone doesn’t like my support pick, or even how I played a meta support, very often that’s 1-2 reports.

Play 50 games a week, and you get maybe 20 reports this way only and other times where you didn’t nano your Genji, or something like that.

Point is, normies like you who play the game 1x a week never get banned because reports decay in time. If you play a lot of games, reports build up. If you’re a guy who plays 5 games a week, you might have the impression that “the reporting system is working as intended”.

I’ve seen some very toxic normies who have 5 hrs a season (hence play 5 games a week), I report them and they never get banned because their account is not “exposed” enough.

First of all, off to a great start. Like it happens everytime. Everytime I read or hear from someone “I am not racist or toxic but …” yeah I know what is going to follow up.

Second, I dont believe you nor the dude that got suspended multiple times, you know what mate? Because I dont CENSOR myself ingame. Ever.
You know how many times I’ve been silenced or suspended? ZERO. On any of my accounts (got 2). So if you, and the other guy got nailed multiple times, claiming 100% innocence is really really really really really hard to believe.

I know it first hand buddy, played since beta in my main account and I was a Sym ONE TRICK for like year and a half. Do you know how many times I got suspended for Gameplay Sabotage or abusive chat? Well if you guessed ZERO times, you win this one.

You have a private profile on a level 29 account, take a chill pill with the “normie” stuff here ok?.
I played a lot of games in the past 3 years and I speak in game just as blunt as I am here in the forums and again, let me reiterate : ZERO suspensions/silences in game.

Is it working perfectly? Not really.
Are most of the dudes getting suspended/silenced guilty? Absolutely.

Just because false reports exist, getting suspended MULTIPLE times and claiming ALL of the reports are false just doesnt fly. It just doesnt.

The most common reason for not getting healed as tank is puhsing when supports are dead.

Just something I’ve noticed about angry tanks that complain about healing, as a healer.

The most common reason for people who get tilted and angry every game is that they think everyone is out to get them.

again, likely you play 5 games a week or so, you get reported for your toxicity but the threshold of 40-50 reports you never reach because you don’t put enough time into the game and reports decay.

it’s not, again people who play 50+ games a week, i.e. addicted players understand WHY the report system is broken. And the reason is that there is a weak proportionality between # games played and # reports. If you play a lot, sooner or later you get reported too much and your account pops. Again, not something you see if:

  1. you play 5 games a week
  2. you play in low elo (which I assume you are) where everyone’s in it for a good time and nobody cares about winning.

again, if you play 5-10 games a week, I have no trouble believing that.

yes due to you never reaching the required # of reports.

You can do something like this:

  1. be toxic 1 game, let’s say 5 people report you
  2. be toxic 2nd game, let’s say 6 people report you

You’re at 11 reports, good now let the account rest for 1 month, rinse and repeat you’ll never get banned.

I got a warning recently on my main account where I purposely behave because I have a lot of skins. After inquiring why, the GM told me that "I behave well and we couldn’t find anything, just take it as a “pat on the back” (LOOOOL!).

System working as intended yes?

My only fault is that on my main account, before playing comp, I sometimes play 2-3 games of Quickplay and I’m a DPS main in Masters so I play Widowmaker. I assume me killing people makes a lot of people mad, mad enough to report for abusive chat :slight_smile:

you keep believing your fairytale anyone in GM will disagree with you and everyone in GM knows the system is broken, that’s actually the main reason why people have multiple accounts these days, in GM you get reported on a loss if people think you were the problem and yes, you get reported for abusive chat also even if you were off VC but you can keep believing otherwise of course.

Dont discuss with anyone. Dont reply to anyone. Check up if its worth to join Voice active, or just listen to some.

Report option is highly abusable because its automated. They wont check up if u said, NO U, or get fcced. They wont check if someone is seriously throwing slurs or not.

If u cant stop typing, mute yourself or get banned.

they actually do check though I think some GMs reserve the right to not check and send the automated thingy so it might take a couple appeals to have your case listened to, it also depends from GM to GM, some GMs I talked to consider “gg ez” not a big deal, others say you shouldn’t even dare tbagging because that’s not sportsmanlike.

Incidentally if you don’t type it makes 0 difference, what matters if if you do stuff that makes people report you. It can be not healing tanks as Mercy and prioritizing DPS, it can be spamming “I need healing”, it can be typing “die” in All Chat while meaning die in the game… if enough people report you in a certain amount of time, the account is suspended, no exceptions.

The only way to get rid of false reports is to let the account rest when it’s hot from reports.

On my main account in the past 2 months I talked twice, once to ask people to report a toxic Mercy who wouldn’t heal me deliberately (let’s assume I was toxic and you consider that toxic behavior, I personally don’t but let’s assume it is and I got max # of report off of that which is 5 since I asked in team chat).

The other time I asked to report a blatant cheater inviting people to watch replay (let’s assume this is toxic by me and also got me 11 reports).

That’s 16 reports I got in 2 months, the number to get the orange warning is around ~30 or so, you’d have to wonder how I got the other 14 since I made a rule to never talk just because I know how moronic people are on EU when it comes to reports.

I was forced to stop playing on my main account for almost 1 month because my main account got mass false reported and I don’t even know how, again I don’t talk in blue or orange chat, only in the private purple and green channels.

what I hate about EU the most is that nobody wants to comms, everyone is an anti-mate (you get the funny Lucio OTP in this meta and if you ask him to swap it’s like you insulted his family or something, leaves VC promptly followed by soft throwing) and there are slightly more smurfs than NA. Also slightly more hitscans and bought/boosted accounts.

This is btw Masters elo where I play regularly I’m not telling you stories from Silver where it’s some people who can’t behave, this is Masters.

I try sometimes to shot call but as DPS that’s often perceived as toxic, god forbid you ask your tanks to hold W or point out that your Hog in this meta should mirror the enemy Hog and not go on a flank so that their Hog feasts on 3 people as your Hog is setting up the flank. Immediately toxic, don’t boss me around, you talk too much, etc. etc. the usual EU special.

On support you get Le Funny Lucio thrower which would be fine if I didn’t have to shut down a Pharmercy and my poor 2nd support is a Mercy who is forced to heal everyone as the Lucio essentially afk’s. You point out that the Mercy is struggling or that your DPS need help to shut down Pharmercy, bam, stop controlling me & the usual stuff let me throw on Lucio. Some 40% winrate guy who was formerly 4000 SR now he’s like 3300. Let’s assume for a moment I’m Masters smurfing in Diamond and I need to kill a Diamond Phara, now idk how Diamond supports think this game works but even if I’m Masters/GM, it’s not like my aim is significantly better, it’s a bit better but I still need pocket to kill the Phara. She does 120 dmg, with Mercy buff it’s 1 direct and 1 partial hit I’m dead. Meanwhile me as Ashe I need like 4 bodyshots to kill her due to Mercy pocket. But Diamonds have this deep delusion that the more you climb, the better your aim becomes, which is kinda true but only up to a degree so long story short this thrower stays on Lucio and loses everyone the game because tanks are starved for healing so they can’t push and I don’t have pocket so I can’t challenge the Pharmercy.

Or you get a Rein OTP who climbed to 3.7 and is GOLD on every role except tank (Rein 1 trick), in this meta he is at total loss since in Masters the enemy tanks give him 0 free swings and just poke his shield). Also 40% winrate, you ask him to swap he tells you you’re a smurf so you should stop being toxic (cuz I’m on a low level acc even tho it’s same SR as my main) etc.

Sometimes I wish I had good ping with NA so that I could escape the s**thole that is EU.

Everyone plays the game pal, everyone has first hand experience so yeah, all you said is 100% irrelevant. My statement wasnt though, because its really ironic that someone suspended multiple times claims “system doesnt work” basically arguing that all their reports were false. Because thats what you are doing.

No. I have 2 accounts and I played MORE than 50 games per week on both. 1 is for comp (Diamond, so take a chill pill with your Private Profile on an alt) and the other one to play with my Gold/Silver friends, so I play on MULTIPLE ranks.

Again, I dont believe people that have been suspended multiple times and claim they are all false reports, mostly because I (and I dont make up crowds here) dont censor myself on the chat or VC ingame and have NEVER been suspended. Even playing MULTIPLE (more than 50 games) per week in 3 years.

Now I dont play that much since RQ but the report system is the same, it didnt change so again :

No, it was the bunch of false reports that get you silenced/banned.

The report system doesn’t work, i reported random people just for fun and i got that message u get when someone gets silenced/banned “thanks for helping the OW community bla bla bla” it makes me laugh, because i just reported them for fun, and it worked.

Yup, the system is so broken, corrupted and toxic in the first place that people can force bans to innocent people in this game

reporting is free, right?
