So I should premise by saying that I am a guy who occasionally will make a new account, but I am also 3.7+ on every role which I consider mid/high-elo.
There is a problem in the elo bracket 2.2-3k.
The amount of what I call “abusive troll accounts” is too high. To the point where I as a 3.7 player struggle climbing and I have to resort to flexing. I can escape that elo eventually but on top of there being a different meta, it takes me maybe 20-30 games to reach low Diamond these days.
If I struggle, I feel plats/golds have 0 chance of escaping this elo. And it’s due to other plats/golds who make smurf accounts to place them in gold/plat/silver/diamond and ruin their own elo. Generally a masters/GM is SIGNIFICANTLY better than a plat/diamond, I remember in s21 I had 90%+ winrate on every role until Diamond. These days, I systematically place low plat on new accounts, because low elo has become WAY more random and ridden with these troll accounts.
I think smurfing in general is bad practice. I am culprit of smurfing myself. However, I think smurfing as a high elo player is more permissible because:
a) you converge more rapidly to your equilibrium elo (in theory)
b) smurfing in diamond/masters isn’t as impactful as a silver player who got a lucky streak and got a new account in plat, or a low diamond in a gold game
in short, fixing these abusive accounts in low/mid-elo is a BIG priority in my opinion, because games in such elos don’t have any structure whatsoever and are basically coinflips even for a masters player like myself it’s incredibly hard to win low plat games. I reckon it can’t be fun for plats, either to have 3 of these “fake smurfs” on 1 team, and lose and they become toxic, then the game after it’s the enemy team.
