A tip to improve your play

At the risk of sounding redundant, 1 of the best ways you can improve your game, regardless of hero, is not get upset. Above all, don’t tilt. It’s impossible to play your best that way.

Maybe you’re not mad, but anxiety still has played havoc with your aim. Stay calm and carefully place your shots.

Okay, no kills yet. Time we start turning this game around. See that Hog over yonder, straight away from us? That’s a lucky break! We could’ve turned the corner, and he be right in front of us. Hook. Dead. Respawn. But instead, he’s over there. He’s no match for us over there, but quickly! Before he gets in range to use his hook. Red X means we hit a headshot. We got this! Again. He’s still coming. And another. And he’s down!

This scenario is based on an actual match I had, the last match I played to be precise. And while I don’t consider it my best, it was by no means flashy, I still regret not saving it.

That encounter with RHog marked a turning point in that game of Push, and I remember thinking to myself, I’m not playing very well.

Widow said something along the lines of, “We are winning. Was there any doubt?” :smiling_imp:

Well, my French femme fatale, as a matter of fact, yes! My team was winning, having already pushed the robot a little ways. You could say I felt a little pressure to do better.

The point is I was struggling, but I was never angry. I was able to better focus on my plays, my aim in particular. I still make mistakes. I still get outplayed. But I’m able to be more in the moment. Something I could never be if I was tilted.

We won that game. Even if we hadn’t, the lesson is still valid.

This is great advice.
Because it’s great advice, it’s probably why it’s going unnoticed here. lol

The best way to enter The Zone is to stay calm and focused… :eye:

Let the rage burn through you like focussed flame.

The key here is focus and awareness, how you get it is your choice and varied with individual.

For some it’s through pure focussed rage hanzo, some through calm zen , some through being a nuisance sombra, somethrough not caring hog, some through being nervous and anxious like juno :joy:, somethrough caring mercy lw, somethrough tyranny moira, some through megalomania junkrat, somethrough trolling ball Lucio, some through patience and calculation doomfist, somethrough strategy mei, somethrough precision widow, somethrough precise execution genji, somethrough pure speed they go so fast that everything stands still Tracer :muscle:

The heroes are examples you can certainly play a calm tracer and rage tracer and speed tracer,.it’s more of about what works for the player.

None better prince vegetables to explain it :joy:

One of the best pieces of advice I got was to focus on what I could change: Myself.
What could I have done better? What can I do better for next time?
I can change myself, I cannot change my teammates.
When I stop raging at what I think my team should have done, I can focus on what I should have done.

Each attempt is a chance to learn & do better next time.

And yes, there might be times when there is nothing you could have done.
But I believe those chances are far & in between - there’s always SOMETHING to be learned.

What you say is correct

But people get mad when they start losing games and they dont have confidence they could easily win more to make up for it and climb.

So in a way its good advice but also unapplyable for 99% of people.

I.e. - a masters player smurfing in gold wont get mad after losing a game they were carrying in. Because they know theyll win the next two.

But a masters player in masters losing a game they were carrying will make them mad. Maybe not immediately, but after enough games.

I rather just let the hate flow through me and start pointing fingers. That Kiri is toxic.

Nah I’ll stick to blaming my teammates, accusing the enemy team of being smurfs/cheaters, and get upset at the blizzard employee assigned to personally rig my matches.

To be completely fair, tilt CAN be a good thing if you keep it in check. As long as you can keep it in check. Controlled panic, as Ruby Daly calls it

Wdym? Like tilt motivating you to get stuff done aka get out there and make impact?

I only meant that a calm and focused mindset might see marked improvement in one’s gameplay. I am not a masters player, but I see no reason this philosophy can’t work there, too.

You can’t control your team, you can only control yourself. :sparkling_heart:

Some weird tips ive found to help me stay untilted and more focused.

  • Smile. Forcefully smile while playing. Brain produces some good chemicals even via forced smiling. Also, somehow the act of conscously physically doing something forces, or encourages ingame focus.
    – also youre already smiling, so when someone flames you, you can laugh it off. They (often) arent in control of their emotions and you are.
  • Keep pinky raised. Similar to above, consiously doing something physical somehow encourages focus in game.
    – Also less hand on the mouse stops me from overgripping the mouse which mucks me up.
  • Deep breathes in down time. 3 seconds in, 3 second pause, 3 seconds out. Downtime is when dead, when regrouping, when fight is over. Keeps you calm.

Now this is a tip that makes the game more fun for me, but keeps me a basic average casual AF gamer. So it’s heavily optional.

  • Stop caring. Stop caring about winning or losing. Stop caring about the little things. Stop caring about the big things. Just do what you can and find enjoyment from the process and journey, not the outcome. This is a double edged sword because you can get good at not caring. Good enough that you play worse for it  but at least you dont have anxiety for performing poorly hah. (Your title says improving play, not improving skill :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

Its like in First Class, when Prof X teaches Magneto find that place “between rage and serenity”. Channelled raged is a powerful tool :exploding_head:

They can be one and the same. As long as the game, the process, is fun for you, that’s what matters.

That reminds me of a play an enemy Rein made on a flashpoint. He pinned our tank, went careening off the map. I bounced off and fell into a pit. I looked at the kill feed and laughed.

You know you’re in a good place if you can admire the plays of your enemies.

Not 100% true, I play petter when i am a tad tilted. Some hate pressure others thrive on it. I usually play at 50%-60% optimally cause playing hyper focused is tiring. I only play more proficiently if the enemy tilts me. I tilt maybe by what they say or i tilt cause they chose a hero i don’t like to play against. I also tilt towards teammates like if they do something stupid i may be less proficient.

I don’t really care about winning or losing. Don’t get me wrong I like winning, but I do like ruining someone’s game that annoyed me more. That’s usually my solo vibe don’t really care about rando’s if i am grouped with someone or my sister don’t really care what my team says or does. Well I do but i won’t ruin my sisters experience.

if i can play tomorow i dont know if i want to the matches today has taken a mental toll on me and not in a good way

simple find a team work with that team and only that team cause randoms in this game will be like well look at my number its so cool right while we get rolled

Avoid the 4 or 5 players that lost the game for you. Pray you get to fight against them next game. Rigged / Forced Loss / Predetermined Outcomewatch will never allow that to happen though. You’re all alone and nothing you do matters with them dragging you down.

Hanzo players are very good with this. The moment you get too excited, you start missing shots.

For a hero like Hanzo, nerves are the enemy.
