A TF2 Heavy-like hero was dropped into Overwatch

And he’s quite oppressive, as it turns out. A lack of overall mobility just isn’t enough to offset the raw DPS Mauga’s miniguns can put out, especially at close range.

And without Spies to farm backstabs or Snipers to farm headshots off of him, there’s not a lot of options to beat him with subterfuge.

What would I do to change Mauga? I think they should make him better at mid-long range and worse at close range. Lower his guns’ spread, but also lower their DPS. Because right now, he’s got good damage at mid-long range and monstrous damage at close range, so other tanks really don’t have a lot of good options to beat him.

So for the most part, you just kind of need to focus his team. Much like orisa he kind falls apart the moment he dosen’t have two supports to stack on to his own healing effect.

That and his lack of team defensive tools to completely block or ignore cc tools, kind of just makes it easy to spam him with stuns / anti as well as his team with projectiles and AOE damage and or CC effects.

He also is probably the easiest tank to counter ult. Torb / reaper / mei / d.va / ashe / zen and more kind of just abuse the fact he is trapped in a small space.

His damage also isn’t as bad as you might think as his spread goes rather wide the moment you start ramping up both of them. Making 90dps the only thing he is doing at range, less so considering that he has fall-off. (Yes the critical damage bit is their as well for on fire enemies but that requires set up, and can be interrupted a dozen different ways)

And ya getting up close to the duel weilding chain gun guy isn’t exactly a great idea. In either TF2/OW. In both cases you will just blow up.

It’s difficult to get your teammates to focus his team when your supports are so busy healbotting the tank, because the tank is continually taking massive amounts of damage, because the enemy tank is a 650 HP Bastion.

90 DPS is nothing to scoff at; for most tanks, at 30 meters, their DPS ranges from “much less” to “just about zero”.

The main difference is that Heavy is the only tank character in TF2. It’s not really anyone else’s job to just soak up enemy fire. A Reinhardt-like character in TF2 would be useless against Heavy.

Definitely not heavy this is a legion being dropped into overwatch and no one but ana has anti titan weapons

Much like orisa, your own tank shouldn’t be attempting to attack him directly either. This is where a lot of riens/hogs kind fall apart.

You can attempt to defend against him at a poke friendly range or abuse tools like genji’s deflect or sigma’s grasp at close range. But you shouldn’t be going directly after him to start your fight.

winston/d.va/ball can move around him, orisa can keep him at bay around rather easily, rien basically never has to worry about the critcal damage as long as refreshes his barrier and plays at poke ranges or around corners that can break los.

And I can go on.

If this is an issue for you, your tank play is a bit rusty. Or you need to start flanking/focus firing the enemy supports to keep mauga off your own tank.

Like the dude is exploitable, don’t play into his strengths. And you will see him fall apart.

If you have to avoid the other tank at all costs, if even being near the enemy tank or going in for a few trades is a death sentence, you’re gonna find it a lot more difficult to take space, i.e. do your job as a Tank.

I assure you, I am not rusty.

It sounds to me like you’ve got all these elaborate plans to beat Mauga with, but you haven’t actually tried to put most of them into practice against a Mauga who knows what they’re doing. You know the old saying; “No plan survives contact with the enemy”.

Not at all costs, but you shouldn’t be getting into point blank range of him.

You can win the poke game, cut him off from his team with tools like winston barrier or mei wall. And easily keep his ult from doing much with reaper/mei/torb/ana/ and much much more.

He isn’t a tank you want to brawl at close range, but he can’t really do anything else but brawl. Abuse that.

Again, this reeks of someone who hasn’t actually played much against Mauga. He’s not closing into melee to swing hammers; he’s using a gun. And it’s not some Reaper shotgun that falls off hard at anything past 10 meters, it’s more than enough to match Zarya’s dps at her beam’s max range.

I have, and I don’t have much issue with him. I use the same game plan as I do against orisa. And works just fine. I have no issues with him.

A lot of the issues people have with him, are the same when playing against orisa.

I will share my next game against him when it comes up.

I have never once struggled against Orisa to the degree I have against Mauga. The plays I’d make against an Orisa simply don’t work against a Mauga. Where an Orisa can be passively held back with barriers and her defensive cooldowns are your only real concern, a Mauga can easily overwhelm you with sheer DPS regardless of the situation.

New Venture update, their dash now one-shots from behind. Mauga is now balanced and the game is saved.

here you go, I ended up losing this one. But does have a lot examples of me shutting down the muaga via with wall or by a counter ult.

dude falls apart the moment he is cut off from his team. And can’t do much about the slow or hard freeze. Or being pressured at long range.

On a side note my aim is is way off in the beggining, and took me a solid minute to warm up. That well I was talking to you at the start so was a little behind the team.

Well, that replay confirms a lot of my suspicions:

  1. This was a Mauga mirror. I hope I don’t have to say matches like this are less-than-ideal for assessing a character’s strength.

  2. You’re playing DPS, not Tank. You’re not the one who actually has to take the brunt of Mauga’s damage. There’s a reason this was a Mauga mirror.

Oyh your a picky one.

I was showing how to counteract him and abuse him.

but whatever, give a me a few games. playing support at the moment.

Countering Mauga becomes a lot easier when you have a Mauga of your own. The pressure a Mauga puts on the Tank in an unmirrored match puts the whole team at a disadvantage.

Yeah, shame we have 6 times more of those to deal with him in this game (in theory)

You make him better at mid range, he starts using his charge to get back into that “magic” range to delete you. This doesn’t work how you want it to.

Well, the main difference is that TF2 Snipers can just one-shot a Heavy with a fully-charged headshot. Even with a pocket Medic giving him a full overheal, a Heavy still can’t live through a Sniper headshot.

Or you know take a moment and watch what specifically I was doing, and when and where the enemy mauga was deing compared to my own.

funny because a competent heavy will not often die to either of those, he will get corner peeked by a soldier or some crazy J_peg level scout movement outplay, yeah if you walk at him you’re gonna die, same thing with mauga (he is overtuned tho)

close is kind of a nightmare because a tracer or genji who move around a lot will be hard for mauga whereas a tank standing in front of him will be easy pickings. hard to balance IMO

mid sure, long? hell no. supports can outheal his long range in their sleep

Genuinely think you’re being kind. It’s one of the most generic cut paste jobs I’ve ever seen. At least they’d drop some original character design before. As nice as the character art can be, this “trope” of a character is a mess, from his essentially racist Samoan stereotype to his dual wield bastion cannons (because one of those in a game isn’t enough you need 3 and one with self heal.)

Compare this to echo, sym, kiri, even mercy, and of course ball - a masterclass in hero design at the time, even if he fits in not at all into 5v5.

Now compare that class to the mindless formulaic cut-paste cash-grab that is Mauga. Trash.
