A small rework to hero progression

I’ve made a post like this before, but it regrettably didn’t get much attention. So I’m making another one.

The hero progression system is genuinely a great thing for the game in theory. It rewards people for playing to their strengths and maining heroes, rather than flexing to whatever happens to be meta at the time. It encourages people to play to have fun rather than to play to win.

However, the system is a bit…lackluster. Getting a few custom things for your profile is cool, don’t get me wrong. But why is that it? Why stop there? Here’s possible ideas to expand hero progression and make it more rewarding for the player.

1: Progression Boxes- Every 5 levels on a hero, get a lootbox filled with only items for that specific hero. This would reward playing a hero for long periods of time without cutting into Blizzard’s revenue overly much, as five levels take quite a while to get. As it stands, it takes me a few days just to get that as a otp, and that’s only when I play a lot per day.

2: Progression specific skins. How about with every title milestone comes an exclusive skin? A reskinned default would be perfectly fine. For instance, at level 250, I could get one of the other concepts for Tracer’s OW2 default along with my “Legendary Time Jumper” title. It’d be a cool way to show your love for your main in-game.

3: Unique voicelines, both equippable and not. For instance, an equippable one could be “I’m already Tracer!” Others could be brought into the game itself. For instance, if I kill another Tracer, a new Tracer vs Tracer voiceline could be added due to my progression level being higher “You just haven’t got the time to beat me, love!” Or if I kill a hero that I’ve killed the most of (my most killed hero would probably be Ana or smth) it could play something like “Again? Haha!” I always love it when new voicelines are added, and having ones exclusive to mains would be really cool.

4: Unique emotes. I think every hero should have a “Progression” emote, that functions like a souvenir that displays progression level.

5: More titles! A big difference in progression on one hero vs all others could get you a “One trick” or “OTP” title, while more well rounded progressions could get a “Generalist” title.

Just a few things the devs could do with the system

Dont get me wrong I dont think anyone would say no or complain about this but the reality is you cant make money on this, and your suggestions require work and money.

Blizz gets money when more people play their game, and this would help retain players, so I disagree.

I highly highly highly highly highly HIGHLY doubt this would translate into a noticeable uptick in player retention or gain. Its such a minor QoL thing that really just makes sense, but that no one would otherwise ever think about.

Might not be noticeable, but it would keep some people playing. And more people playing = more people buying skins
