Making sure there is at least 1 tank and 1 support per team, and opening 3 slots to flexers/DPS.
So 3 roles: Tank, Support and Joker, each with its own SR.
Most Jokers will be DPS players anyway (statistically), but it opens the door for more creativity and strategizing, without giving up on basic quality standards, like having at least 1 healer and 1 Tank per team.
So you’re basically avoiding extreme scenarios like 5 DPS (which are guaranteed defeats in most cases).
Also by fixing 2 slots per team, you’re making the balance easier than open queue, but still harder than role Q.
Role Q remains the most casual-friendly option, because there are strict rules that prevent chaos.
Having a predictable experience is an important selling point for any competitive game.
Open Select on Hero choices midgame, across all roles, however:
5 players per team
1 Tank player maximum per team
2 Support players maximum per team
5 DPS players maximim per team
Basically, Open Queue, but if people pick 2 Supports, then nobody else on the team can pick Support. But if that Support swapped to DPS, then somebody else would be able to pick Support.
Then because it would be first-come-first-serve for Tank/Support picks. You’d have an optional Role Queue for “I get to pick Tank or Support first before my teammates”. (Which would also have the benefit of skipping all backfill games)
Might even toss in, that if the team has only 1 Support player, then the 15hps or 22hps Support passive cannot be interrupted by damage, and is just constantly active.
Oh, and maybe have the option of making it so that the Role Queued player gets the choice of not being able to swap. When queuing up. That way they can’t be bullied off of a Role.
If this replaces role queue; they couldnt balance mutliple tanks for 6 years, what makes you think they would be able to do it now. One of the main reasons we are removing a tank is they struggle to balance them when there is multiple on a team
If this a separate mode and role queue still exists, you wont get individual balance specifically for this mode. You will have 3 giga tanks because you cant have tanks be both balanced to have 3 of them while only being locked to 1 in RQ
The point is faster queues, without compositions that can be overly durable, and can only be countered by mirroring with an overly durable composition.
It’s not perfect, but there is no perfect Queue system with zero downsides.
This version just has better downsides.
For instance, your version would just get non-stop leavers. And no matter how bad a hero pick choice is, it’s still better than 4v5 or 3v5.
Where as the version I’m showing, like +90% of the time, it’s just gonna be
1-3-1 for Quickplay, with a good amount of 1-2-2. Maybe some 0-3-2. Or at a minimum you’ll get 0-4-1
1-2-2 for Comp above Bronze
I mean it’s harder to balance for sure, but it gives people the freedom they missed from Open Q, while reducing some of Open Q biggest problems, like 6-DPS comps and the complete lack of predictability.
I told you Open Queue has its own set of problems and this hybrid is a middle ground.
So you care about durable comps (Elite issue), but consider the 5-DPS comp a normal side effect (where the majority of the player base exist).
Finding solutions for the 10%, not the 90%?
You think a version where people pick what they want will have leavers?
But your version where a Tank 1-trick is forced to play DPS will not?
Interesting… would love to hear your thought process.
