A quick question here, what the heck is a "Skill shot"?

I heard people say this word everywhere from then and now but I have no idea what it is. So I decided to post here before I’m too afraid to ask

Edit : Thank you for the answer

So it’s basically mean something that need aiming. =_=a

A shot, that requires skill.

A shot that the majority of players are going to miss. Being able to consistently hit it takes skill so players call it a skill shot.

Something that requires an extra level of skill in order to get value out of it more often than not and/or use it in the most effective way.

Typically (but not always) “skillshot” also invokes something that has a high potential to offer little or no value when used incorrectly. Because of the difficulty, it is something frequently attempted every time an opportunity presents itself with the expectation that it might not accomplish anything.

Reinhardt’s firestrike is a good example of both parts.

It does a lot of damage and can have huge playmaking potential (for example - by breaking a riptire), but is difficult to land on multiple players or on high mobility targets, and missing it is no huge loss, so it is generally used every time it comes off cooldown regardless of whether it is likely to do anything useful.

Tracer’s pulse bomb, Ashe’s dynamite, and 76’s helix rockets are more good examples.

Similarly, both of Ana’s abilities qualify in terms of potential, but only sleep dart tends to fall into the “better to attempt it even if it probably won’t work” category. A lot of things can block sleep dart, it’s hard to hit on a small moving target, and careless teammates can cancel the effect, so missing it isn’t a huge loss. On the other hand, missing anti-nade completely would be a huge mistake that could cost you a fight which you might have won by waiting until you have an better opportunity.

Anti-nade falls more into a category with things like Zarya’s graviton surge: it can be difficult to land correctly but you simply cannot afford to waste it in a situation that MIGHT be successful.

Normally a skill that is hard to land to get the effect of. You could call Widows headshot kill a “skill shot”. People start to use the word sometimes pretty likely. It also matters how much you can spam it to get results.

Ana’s sleep dart is also an example ON DPS! But gets trivial on tanks due to the massive hitbox. Same goes for Moiras new Necrotic Orb.

Skill shot is a basically a play that is really hard to pull off, but offers an insane value, generally to counter another play from the enemy.

Like sleeping a NanoBlade Genji.
Booping off the map a Roadhog that is ulting.
Deflecting a High noon that is going to delete your team.

Things like that.

Lmao all these overcomplicated explanations.

Simply put, an ability that requires aim.
It’s called a skill shot because A) It’s a skill/ability B) You shoot it, that’s all there is to it. Often times skills shots are projectiles.

In the most basic sense, it’s a shot that requires strong skill in a certain field (usually mechanical) to land consistently. Despite what the community might say, this does also include things like projectile and boop abilities.

Unless its on a hero like Junk because they totally can’t take skilled

This person gets it :point_up_2:
Anything that requires decent amount of aim to land is skill shot (but is mostly refered to abilities, not primary fires, since 90% of them are just a guns that require aim). Stuff like Hook, sleep dart, fire strike.

Basically anything but turrets and mercy beam after that if you kill someone they ll whine and say your char takes no skill then if they kill you your trash gg. Its in the OW handbook page 59 right after i lost it was my teams fault and sr is rigged a must read.

something that you can miss,
that does not have a big area of impact,
that can’t be spammed like a Automatic rifle,

bonus points if its a ult and takes a lot of time to build.

e.g. sleepdart over a distance on a squishy

It’s funny to me that Winston right click has a smaller hitbox than Sojourn railgun. So basically more of a skill shot for 1/3 the damage, awesome.

Alternatively you could define a “non skill shot” as something that doesn’t require much thought or precision and/or pretty much works on its own

Like say……Dmg orb …most things are a skill shot in comparison

4 simple things to identify a skill shot

Range
Accuracy
Difficulty
Clutchyness

It’s a skill shot when you’re doing it and no-skill when you’re receiving it.

Clicking on red things with a computer mouse is obviously the height of human achievement, so a skill shot would be clicking on red things with a computer mouse. That totally requires skill.

You are playing a clicking-on-red-thing video game…of course if someone is better at clicking on red thing they are more skillful in this context.

Just to add, not just aim. Is the usage of something that requires be precise to get the right result.

Prediction, aim, timming. Anything on the game that requires be accurate to get some value from it could be considered “skill oriented”.

The more precise you need to be or risker to do it to achieve the result, the more skill it requires.

Fth isn’t a skill shot, sojourn m2 is. Ana shots isn’t exactly a skill shot if comparated to widow hs. Same goes to hanzo hits.

The amount of risk and precision to do are directly related to the final result. Not all skill shots are exactly related to aim, but the ability to predict, aim and timming being precise to get the value.

Hitscan have instant travel time, meaning ignore timming requiring aim and some prediction. Projectile would be the opposite, small amout of aim, good timming and high prediction. The game itself often gives projectiles a bit forgiving size.

Anything in the game that has high risk to do and has bad results if you do a mistake can be considered skill shot.

Rein firestrike can be, sigma’s rock can be, bap lamp can be, widow hs can be.

Depending on the situation, rein could land a firestrike on pharah or rip-tire, at same time could be simply being used against tanks. Same about window if she doesn’t have anybody pressuring her, she would have more room for her shots having less risk, while if someone pressure her would have more risk.

Skill shot isn’t “iron clad thing” as folks try to say, while often certain stuff are more punishing because they have long cooldows and mistakes can be really unforgiving, if the value of the ability on the said match were minor could be not considered skill shot.

I often use dart against genji which can be considered skill shot, but if the other team have torb and mei, hardly my dart would be a skill shot.
