The blunder is the failure to look at things in a broader picture. When you dont look at the broader picture when doing game balance massive power spike/creeps/drops happen. Examples:
Hanzo/widowmaker - not meta during dive, buffed to be good in dive, widowmaker quickly became meta in dive, hanzos rework came after dive died(3 days after brigs release into comp). They became overwhelmingly overpowered immediately.
Brigitte - brigitte herself is not really overpowered, but she shuts down dive meta, and the entire game was balanced around dive, from s5-s9, so when they implemented brigitte without rebalancing non dive heroes, brigitte became overwhelmingly unfun to fight and completely broke the games balance as dive was the games balance for over a year.
Pharah - the range buffs that happened nerfed pharah a lot indirectly, and now mercy is getting her healing nerfed meaning the pharmercy combo is a lot weaker now. Massive power drop.
The supports - we do not know how powerful the support changes will impact the meta, but as far as i see it, in one way or another itll change the game in ways they didnt forsee.
Hammond - In seagulls interview, he made the mention that hammond could bring dive back but as triple tank, the person at the time in the interview just goes ‘oh’. It shows that they really dont think about what effects could happen indirectly.
Any new hero, any nerf, any buff, any rework, no matter how tiny, will impact the game immensely sooner or later. soldier went from op to a meme and he was nerfed from 20 damage to 19 damage per shot.
that wasnt indirect though, she was directly nerfed. The rework after that nerf didnt do anything to help her, besides now she is a better spawn killer, i want her buffed but realistically there isnt enough counterplay to her to allow her to be more reliable. Make counterplay to hack then revert the nerfs
it doesnt require skill, you push a button near an enemy and its basically auto aim at that point, before it was nerfed it was overpowered due to how reliable it was. It doesnt take skill, it takes patience because of how unreliable it is now
I pretty much exclusively play Sombra, sometimes Mercy since everyone picks DPS in QP so I’m fairly certain I know what a skilled move is and Hack definitely is one.
That’s true. I figure Mercy will still have a place, but Ana might see some more play on highground defender maps. I don’t see Zen going anywhere soon.
The blunder is thinking that they don’t do this already, and using hindsight to criticize their choices without offering a way to look into the future.
If you know how to correctly predict the impact of changes to a game with countless variables, I’m sure there’s a nice bag of money waiting for you somewhere.
Until then, we’re all stuck with trial and error, and a player base that hasn’t learned to deal with the latter.
widow was not meta in dive and hanzo is the reason dive was killed.
dive was the best thing for this game btw
foreshadow a bit. Ana won’t be meta, mercy still will be until she gets nerfed more, moira might be played more in lower ranks but she will still be hot garbage in the higher ones. Lucio still horrid and zen still a must pick. Brig OP f her
seagull brain dead. Even with 60HPS Mercy couldn’t keep 3 tanks alive and now she has 50? HA.
mercy was never used in triple tank except owl orisa/hog/dva for one. for the supports im saying sooner or later these changes will impact the game heavily, and dive thing is opinion based. Widow was meta in dive hello? from her buff in dive till the end of dive she replaced genji completely in dive.
Also, i wouldnt be so arrogant to call seagull brain dead
they obviously dont, by what i said about hammond, they dont have hindsight into things and its clear. also that isnt being braindead, thats admitting he regrets mercy getting reworked, aka admitting he was wrong. Yknow, like a humble person does.
yes, its so much fun haHAA. and ‘also that isnt being braindead, thats admitting he regrets blah blah blah’ is to you.
I am not saying i can perfectly predict what happens, i never foresaw orisa/hog/dva becoming meta in owl as anti sniper, and i cant forsee how exactly these support changes will impact the meta.
Let’s not forget because of Mercy not being balanced also causes a lot more other problems. Like the match is always a 7v6 unless you kill Mercy. After getting a kill you have to soon close the gap to the point within 30 seconds or else another person will be Rez’d.
All the other support heroes have to get buffs to keep up with Mercy. Which will cause more support power creep. If the damage in the game ever goes down. We will have a lot of healing power without having much time to kill.
