As a whole, And I have wanted to ask this community this question for a very long time… As well as any story writer for the game.
Does this game exist in a much darker universe than previously predicted? Why are there 2 heroes of the same type, at the same time. running around and fighting one another?
Why do we have 32 unique individuals (right now) “heroes” that are at any place in time, able to fight each other in any location.
2 widow makers, 2 hanzos, 2 moiras…
Is this really about Overwatch, or was this a science experiment that went wrong? What is this really about?
the pvp is not canon. Reaper would also not work with Overwatch and Tracer would also not kill Winston or Mercy. Also the maps are vary/wrong. Kingsrow has a different layout than in Alive and the roofs look completely different. Many maps also make no sense from an architectural point of view. Chateau Guillard alone is a disaster as a castle where someone is supposed to live. It’s cold af in winter, everything flies in your face when there’s a gust of wind, and from the outside there are three storeys of windows, but inside it’s a wall with pictures or bookshelves. And that runs through all maps. It’s just scenery (Hollywood is the only map that makes more or less sense, since it’s supposed to be (film) scenery.)

I actually have the theory that PVP happens inside of Athena
She gathers info on exceptional individuals and pits them in combat in a variety of scenarios no matter how implausible they may seem to prepare for future conflicts
This would explain why she’s the anouncer and why when you change heroes you get a weird techno spawn effect. We as players dont embody the actual characters, we embody the AI/lines of data used as placeholders in these hypothetical combats (also, the matches are based on real events in the Overwatch world: King’s Row depict humans trying to kill omnics living in underground communities with an EMP device while authorities try to stop them, Horizon Lunar Colony depicts the ape subjects revolting and taking control of the base as they kill off the remaining human scientists)

I am starting to wonder the same thing myself. Something doesn’t add up. Why would there be copies of each “hero” on each side vs one another.
2 widow, 2 rein, 2 hanzo, etc… Unless something MORE sinister is going on. Just for the fact that this game supposedly takes place in the 2070s.
The the current progress of humanity. We are NOWHERE close to that level of research and technology and wouldn’t even remotely hit that level for maybe another 1,000+ years.
- Tracer cheating time.
- bionic limbs and light propulsion.
So yeah, this is something MORE. Good theory!
The game doesn’t exist in canon. It’s just a game. There’s no copies of heroes or Athena simulation.
It’s science fiction, it doesn’t have to be realistic.

the technology in Overwatch is not that far from ours and often doesn’t really make sense ((parked) floating cars). I suspect that humanity in 2077 will be more advanced than in Overwatch, but also significantly different (assuming humanity still exists by then and there are no major wars).
However, I doubt whether we will explore space with spaceships like in Star Trek in the year 2200.
Time and time travel is a tricky business and probably impossible to manipulate (unless using near light speed).
Prostheses and implants like in Overwatch or even Cyberpunk will come and prostheses that already exist today are already very well developed.
Hard light is probably never really feasible (despite the particle nature of light).
Whether it’s fantasy or scifi, it needs a certain level of realism to be believable, at least for things that we know and understand ourselves. (E.g. physics, how weapons work, etc.) Especially in worlds that show a version of a possible future for us, humanity and the earth. There is the UN, there are many countries and above all real places (Paris, Stuttgart, New York, LA, etc.)
