5v5 is going to replace 6v6 in Overwatch 2. After playing the beta myself, I can easily say that 5v5 plays much differently compared to 6v6. 5v5 feels more based on individual skill whereas 6v6 is based on collective skill.
However, 5v5 is obviously very polarizing because it changes the whole dynamic, a dynamic that attracted people to the game in the first place. I don’t doubt that there would be people that will quit the game as a result of this change in dynamic while others may quit because the change never happened, but what if we managed to appeal to both crowds?
Introduce a 6v6 mode. Rebalance heroes to accommodate that mode. 5v5 can be the “default mode” and 6v6 can be a mode that shakes things up with bigger teams and adjusted abilities.
You already have the original game that the heroes were balanced around anyway and since there are only three new heroes in Overwatch 2, it wouldn’t take long to rebalance them for 6v6.
This is just my opinion of course, but I do think that it’s a great way to prolong the life of this game as well as offer extra content (repackaged content, but hey, variety is variety).
What do you guys think?

I’m pretty sure the amount of players in a match is determined at the engine level, which would make it impossible or at least very difficult for a 6v6 mode to be introduced. I liked 6v6 too.

They made 5v5 specifically because they couldnt bother to rebalance tanks

I highly doubt it’s an engine issue because Overwatch was actually seen doing 6v6 anyway waaaaaaaay back when it was first announced (that infamous clip where people complained that literally nothing changed).
I think it’s more of an overcompensation thing. Overwatch was mostly abandoned after the release of Echo and they’re trying everything in their power to make the game feel worth the wait.
I don’t really think it’s because tanks can’t be balanced because one tank works well enough in Overwatch 2. I think it’s more the fact that off tanks are very different from main tanks yet are grouped in one category. I’m not saying that they should split the tank role, but it’s definitely more engaging to play Wreckingball over Reinhardt.
Wasn’t that an extremely early build of the game? I don’t think they had decided to do 5v5 at that point.
I doubt it’s a problem, except for maybe on Switch.
And if anything, a 6v6 Open Queue called “Quickplay Classic” in the Arcade would probably do well to drain off some excess players from Role Queue.
Also they could have it where it’s “Only Attacker Side, or Only Defenders Side” but if you stick around, the next match loads into the other side.
And then maybe they put some rough percentage changes on Tanks. Like
- -30% TankHP/Armor
- -30% Tank regen speed
- -30% Tank cooldown speed

It’s still the same engine. ¯_ (ツ)_/¯
I’m sure they could make it work.
Get in line, you should see how Open Queue deteriorated after they stopped caring/focusing on it and when they started balancing around Role Queue instead. The mode will be taken to Arcade where no one will queue for it just like the others and it will have outrageous queue times.
Maybe. It would be cool if they could.
So why is it much faster to get into a game of quickplay over competitive despite the game prioritizing competitive play in the first place?
Look, think what you want, but I don’t think simply “accepting something may not work” is the best approach. Mind you, Blizzard considered selling skins for $50 till players complained how awful of an idea that actually sounds. I’m certain those modes will still be supported if more players would just talk about them.
The forums are a good place for that.
I’m keeping it real here. Overwatch has a population (tank) problem and they addressed it with the introduction of 5v5. If they reintroduce 6v6, it will affect the 5v5 queue times and no you don’t want that from a developer’s perspective. If you also think about it, they’ll have to continuously balance the heroes for several modes which is energy and time consuming. They have already shown us how they treated Open Queue/FFA and they didn’t care to balance the mode at all. The game mode wasn’t taken serious and it’s dead. Don’t get me wrong, I want all modes to come back and to be as great as they use to be. (Sorry to break your bubble)
I played 5v5 with 4 other overwatch veterans. We all agreed that 5v5 was very deathmatch feeling and had lost the grouping up and team play of overwatch 1. I really think overwatch will keep more players if they have a 6v6 competitive mode

It isn’t. 5v5 was created for balance. Custom games already can go up to 12 players.
Got any citations for this claim? Generally games improve and add features as the engine is upgraded and not degrade or remove features.
This. I hate two and will never play it again. Feels like a cheap knock off of the original with a barbaric greedy monetisation system that goes against gamers. It’s a disgrace and blizzard should be ashamed. Played since launch OW1 and will never play it again.
I think they should add 6v6 for sure, but don’t rebalance the heroes. Make it role queue. If you force them to balance it differently, they will never put the resources and time to add it. It you make the mode but don’t change balance, they might actually add it.
Honestly, I think they should do a 8v8 mode with 1 additional player per role. It would be more fun and more balanced than 6v6 with the current heroes.

Make 2cp and hybrid maps 6v6 with classic two tanks
hanamura and rein zarya on kings row
Overwatch 2 is so bad. Tanks are just too overpowered. They would’ve fixed everything if they just removed some shields. 6 v 6 was way better.
Open queue is dead… they should just call it 3 tanks 2 healers queue. DPS are obselete… you can only place DPS in role queue which I felt was not beneficial for flex players such as myself. I loved OW1 open queue because I could also switch to whatever character to counter the other team. Now everything is HARD STUCK. THIS GAME BLOWS. srsly tho.
6v6 with Ow2 kits wont work.
You need the old kits back.
