They totally can go back to the old client. That data didn’t just disappear. It would be them ditching the current client, going back to OW1 and just retooling the few heroes that have come out + retooling a few maps.

Well, OW2 has been played by more people than OW1 during season 1 ; therefore OW 2 is better than OW1. And that’s why they replaced 1 by 2 : The first game was dying anyway and the second is supposedly better.

All of that has nothing to do with balance and 5v5.
I mean, the role of a “tank” is have meaningful and impactful ability that enable their teammates to fulfil their own roles.
Personally having a large HP pool and immense Mitigation ability is just a cheap way to go about it. Pretty much like WoW work.
As a game developer, i have used different approached that works really well, without arbitrarily giving huge effective HP pool to the character itself.
For a concise example, look at Symmetra’s ultimate. She’s a squishy, but that ultimate make tons of space.
This is the definition of a support. Not a tank. It’s literally in the name. “Support” as in to support teammates with abilities that allow them to do their job. The definition of a tank is to make space by being a powerful, large enemy. Also protect teammates with your presence alone. They didn’t just “arbitrarily give tanks more health” it was systematic that they had to be more powerful and have larger health pools since there would only be one instead of two now

Tanks were working perfectly fine in 6v6. It was the amount of shields that wasn’t working.
Agreed not having a second tank takes a lot of synergies out of play. Also puts more stress on how good the tank player is. Tanking wins and loses games now. And the rock paper scissors mechanic in the tank role will become unhealthy with nerfs eventually. You cant balance a one slotted role properly.
Whatever the actual wording should be there…I’m no game dev….but they said it themselves….the game engine was made with 5v5 in mind…and they would have to start over if they were to change it now…
Regardless the point remains…the game is, was, and will continue to be 5v5….anyone that has a problem with that needs to figure something out…cause it’s not changing

I disagree that it was easier to balance. I think balancing tanks with the inability of oppressive synergies being possible is inherently easier. That said, I don’t think making tanks beefier because “there is only one” was the right call. I think most (if not all) of the tanks should probably be dialed back, but that’s a take for another discussion, I suppose.
I as a player don’t care if its easier or harder to balance.
I care for what is better for me, not if the devs have to work or try harder.
If I buy a car I’m not going to buy a s**t car because it’s easier for my mechanic to repair.
Especially not if he works in one of the biggest garages in the world.
Technically, 1-2-2 can be more barrier heavy than 2-2-2 if they balanced the game to be that way. This whole “double barrier was bad because you were endlessly shooting barriers” excuse to support 5v5 is just bad because balance is what causes barriers to endlessly be up, not whether there are 1 or 2 tanks on the team.
5v5 can be balanced to be a slower game than 6v6 was, it just depends what pace the devs want the game to play at.

That’s why I’ve never argued that double barrier was the problem with 6v6. Though double barrier was boring af, it’s not what made 6v6 suck. A rule of thumb for any game that has roles, is to never have the same amount of tanks as dps. It made tanks have to be considerably weaker which was stupid.
Double shield was just a symptom of the bigger issue, which was two tanks on a team with two supports and two dps was a stupid idea
