role queue doesnt work because nobody wants to play tank in 6v6
open queue means the game is won or lost before you even load in based on which team actually got the tank player or decent flex, and open queue also leads to incredibly degenerate metas that often bench like half the roster
of the relative minority of tank players, a disproportinate number are going to favour sticking with 5v5 if it’s an option
meme formats like min3/max1 are just a desperate attempt to mitigate this, but none of them can actually address the problem that people simply do not want to play tank in 6v6. they voted with their queues in overwatch 1
5v5 being present has no effect on 6v6’s success as stated directly by Keller, as the player base of Overwatch is sufficiently large enough for pop count to not matter, and is instead more influenced by role distribution.
Many things accounted for the subpar queue times of Overwatch 1, and many of which have been addressed in some way during Overwatch 2’s life, which is why the tests are happening instead of blindly and stupidly making a decision based on old info, be that never testing 6v6 in the first place or by instantly adding it full time without tests.
So instead of making a conclusion based on things that you have no idea about, maybe just let the test happen, and itll speak for itself on whether or not queues will be terrible.
Frankly during the first test of role queue 6v6 the DPS queue time for me as a top 250 peak DPS player (the role impacted the hardest by queue times) it was rare to ever see a queue above 2-3 minutes, despite being a DPS and very high elo.
Even the post test developer update talked about a remarkably steady player count, never having the drops associated with waning interest. Granted that only accounts for the short period of the test and not years with the mode.
If you asked me the test now with ranked 6v6 is to determine a few things.
If ranked will move more people over to 6v6 as there is a large community of players that wont ever touch anything unranked
If the interest in 6v6 as a whole is enough to justify 2 separate queues of ranked and unranked, and which is the more popular version to be added should there not be enough interest in the other.
If the interest in the format has held since the last round of tests.
Should 3 be a confirmed yes, Im almost certain a version of 6v6 will become a permanent addition, or at least see a period of much longer testing to see if the mode has lasting players, as outright the half season tests we’ve been getting so far cant be enough to determine the extent of how many players will prefer 6v6 or if 6v6’s current players just havent had enough time to tire of the mode.
They do tend to be the shortest, but there are enough tank players to keep my DPS queues almost instant in Quickplay and at three minutes or less in Ranked, which is a rather significant difference when compared to fifteen minutes, or more, in the last couple of years of 1.
People are just not too keen on playing tanks and as a tank main for the first five years of the game’s run, I can offer my qualified opinion that the reasons are similar enough to be nigh the same.
Maaaaybeeee attempt to fix the core problems instead of saying “ah screw it” and throwing a tank away.
Problems like:
Over-abundance of stuns / CC
The worst metas of all time lasting literal YEARS.
Idiotic amounts of sustain creep
No mechanically intensive tanks to draw in players
The most popular heroes in the other 2 roles tend to be the more mechanically intensive of their role (mercy being the main exception), tank doesn’t have that. Doom and ball are the hardest but some could argue they are TOO hard to the point where you need to be an otp with hundreds of hours to even think of getting consistent value and on top of that… they aren’t that good most of the time, so if you aren’t said OTP you just get mopped.
DId you play the recent 222 test? It didn’t feel that q times that long. It actually was surprisingly short. I expected more than two times longer than 122 QP, but it was comparable to 122 QP.
Also, if you have played 5v5 OQ, you’d definitely notice that 2+ tanks per team aren’t that rare. It feels that many more tanks play oq rather than rq and I think it’s because they don’t like single tank. I know playing tanks in OQ is necessary to win, but it was the same in OW1 but people didn’t play tanks at that time. Now it is different. We have 13 more aggressive tanks now, while there were only 8 tanks in OW1 in which almost half of them were shieldbots.
What do you mean, I love having all the carry on my shoulders while the 4 stack in my game ignores me entirely. It’s great. Who wouldn’t enjoy it? Sure, the enemy is a 5 stack working together, but I’ve got Mercy, Lifeweaver, Hanzo, Genji. There’s no way we lose!
“Your recent behavior is not in-line with our community guidelines.” E-Excuse me?
I can definitely attest to this. 5v5 OQ comp is the main mode I’ve been playing and pretty much every single game is 2-3 tanks and 2-3 supports. 1 dps sometimes but typically, 3 tanks 0 dps beats 2 tanks 1 dps unless that dps player is really good and is not focused down by the enemy team.
I’m looking forward to the upcoming 6v6 test for pretty much this reason: it’s going to be OQ except for limiting tanks to two per team. Current 5v5 OQ Comp sucks, imo, because it’s 3+ tanks per team every game.
OQ QP is less likely to have 3+ tanks on a team, but there’s also no matchmaker because it’s presumably using RQ matchmaking parameters so… yeah.
I’ll admit right away that I’ve got nothing but anecdotal evidence, but I felt like they threw matchmaking completely out of the window for the Christmas 222 test. The queues were good, but the match quality was pretty dire.
Not that 122 is any better, mind you. Personally, my hopes are resting on this upcoming almost-OQ 6v6 mode being successful enough to replace the current OQ modes.
I’m just wondering what team 4s response will be if a majority (not all) of the tank mains move to to the 6v6 mode. Will be quite the pickle for them lol
Why tho ? the thing is a lot of people despise solo tanking so they avoid playing tank at all cost but duo tanking is less stressful, like dps/sup you share the blame
mystery hero is in the main tab right now and game has 7 arcade modes, if it was just me i keep only 5v5 role queue and 6v6 open queue, delete 5v5 open q
My DPS queue times (NAPC) were 15 minutes for ranked. However, even if they were half that, DPS would still be unavailable for me, as I draw a personal red line at 5 minutes.
