its funny how you say its shows how blizzard is so out of touch, when i would say it shows how our community acts likes to freak out at any sign of change without really giving it a chance.
There are some evils with it, giving up tank combos is sad, disturbing 6 stacks is sad.
BUT, the tank role has been in need of a philosophy change for a while. Im sorry for all 5 tank mains who are being disturbed by this, but there needs to be some kind of new approach to the role, too many people just consider it not fun. (though i’d argue the biggest reason is because the role is miss understood, which isnt something that can be fixed so easily)
Reducing cc and increasing steadfast should make tanking way more fun. Solo tanking I have my doubts. As for not giving it a chance that’s Blizzard’s fault the only certain thing I came away with from that presentation is I can no long duo tank. Which sucks.
Because blizzard decided to cater to dps players and still does, all nerfs tank had was because dps players didnt like to shoot at shields, or because tanks denied them of their precious flashy kills, then they introduced even more CC and tank busting abilities like Echo, and people wonder why tank players didnt found the role that fun to play

Yea, I honestly haven’t seen a single positive reaction from a streamer barring perhaps Stylosa. Not only does it make tanking a hassle, it will make double sniper meta again with barely any barriers at this point. What are they gonna do then? Nerf Widow so that she two shots people? Just absolutely moronic. I just think the team is incompetent barring the art directors/designers.

They absolutely have backpedalled before if a design decision doesn’t work as planned. Many occasions of this in Blizzard games.
But I see you’ve already jumped to the conclusion that they’ve “wasted” resources. Bold speculation there! OW2 isn’t even releasing this year, and we know very little about how teams and heroes are changing.
In the beginning when the majority of the roster was made, there were no limits. The distribution got made then, for better or worse. Also making a hero is necessarily super hard and time consuming: it isn’t lazy if they can’t pump out new heros faster. Making software (my job btw) is weird in that hiring new people to a team will slow it down (google Mythical Man Month).
Realized another great thing about 5v5: the game will run much smoother with less players to send updates via servers and less players to render. This is great for both console players and low-end pc players like me.
Stylosa did a poll with 11,000 people responding on whether 5v5 seemed good or bad, and it was nearly a perfect 50/50 split.
I’m opposed to 5v5, but I’m also a realist. So saying it’s “overwhelmingly negative” isn’t really a safe statement. I’d call it “divisive” rather.
Smurfs are a bigger issue now than they will be once OW2 hits and brings in a lot of new players, because the likelyhood of bumping into a smurf will be lower.
P.s. I’m on level 350 and have seen 2 smurfs in my games ever. What I’ve seen is a lot of players that go uncountered in their small niche they know how to play, and people who are having a very good day.
I’m more interested in what tank players think of the change.

Don’t forget about playing DVA into a Zarya and not being able to do a single thing without other tank helping out.

This. Overwhelmingly this. This this this this a thousand times.
2/2/2 did away with solo and 3 tanks.

Can you think of a major change in gaming (any game) that hasn’t initially been met with overwhelming negativity?
Usually large changes in aged and mature games like Path of Exile are met with praise.

Unless those changes are equivalent of shooting machinegun with blindfold to hit target.
i actually really like the 5v5 idea.
having 2 tanks has always been a big problem for overwatch because of how powerful tanks themselves are.
the off tank role is a better version of a dps. all theyve done is removed the seperation in the land of tank then rebalanced the tanks to match.
people are afraid of change, and i dont really understand why. statistically speaking, most of the playerbase is in silver/gold/plat. elo’s where players literally have no idea what there doing (to say there playing overwatch is a stretch). why does a tank that stands at choke waiting for dps to pop off for an entire match care what they do to0 the tank role. (because your not really a tank main, your a sit at a choke and wait main)
they wernt playing it right to begin with, but maybe with the new change they will.

I mean you tachnically outplay the zarya but you’ll be heavyly zoned out, but yeah i see the problem missing the other tank to rely on
I think the same! Blizzard die because of Activision…

Same here, i’m a very flex player but mainly an off-tank (Zarya w/150 hours, Hog w/120h, DVA w/105h) and i ever work in tandem with a main tank mate/friend. So OW2 is not in my taste.

Actually supports have often defined the meta. Brig 1.0 was the sole reason GOATs became the meta. Zen having 30% discord orb was a massive reason JJonak was able to pop off in OWL. Mercy team res, and the power of support ults since (trans, beat etc) has often been more impactful than tank ults.
'people are afraid of change, ’
Which people are you referring to? The community has been crying out for years for new heroes, new maps, new game modes, removing 2 CP etc. If anything, most people wanted a lot more change that added to the existing formula/foundation of a highly successful game. Unfortunately, the change we are being offered in OW2 is removing key parts of this foundation.
supports help define meta, but tanks are always the most powerful aspect. tanks carry matches, they literally control the pace of a match. (dive started because of dva and winston, not because of lucio/zen, lucio/ana, mercy/zen or w/e; these healers were brought along for the ride. goats started off because brig could hard counter the heros/tanks that focused on killing supports. but also because she could STUN a shielding rein. healers enable tanks yes, but tanks still run the show more so the anyone else)
and while support ults can be more powerful they also charge alot slower then for instance rein shatter.
this isnt even a debate, anyone whose above gold knows that climbing as a tank is the fastest way (if your good at them) as they impact the match more then anyone. (its tanks > healers> dps terms of importance)
you can be afraid of some change while wanting others. this is a SUPRISE change, and alot of people are afraid of that type of change. things they didnt ask for scare them, they wanted 2 cp removed because they personally dont like it. but they also HATE when new characters are added even though they keep asking for new ones. simply because the new character doesnt fit what they wanted from one.
but too be clear: some people did want this change, because god knows were tired of tanks being the most influential role in the game. (which is funny because with all the buffs/reworks these tanks are getting it might be a latter move and a single tank could hold the power two used too)
