Okay, so a few things:
-
Even that 6 minute stat was actually caveated such that it was incorrect. Specifically, you are getting that from a tweet that specified that that was not counting the Korean server, where DPS queue times were higher. That’s a whole major region the game is in! So the average DPS queue times in 6v6 overall across all regions were higher than 6 minutes, and likely by a significant amount.
-
The average queue time is obviously just an average. Which means that probably about half of people had queue times higher than that. And that’s a real problem, because when you are talking about queue times this long, each marginal minute you add to it is exponentially bad in terms of the risk that a player will consider the queue times intolerably long and just not play the game anymore. So even if you thought a 6 minute queue time is fine, a situation where there’s a 6 minute average queue time is still a situation where a ton of people will have queue times that aren’t fine, and there’s a good chance those people leave the game because of it. That’s a really big deal for the health of the game!

Even if we take a 6 minute queue time (which isn’t the fully picture, as explained in #1 and #2 above), it is just wrong to act like that’s not a prohibitive queue time for tons of people. As I’ve explained to you, most games are QP games, and those only last like about 8 minutes on average, so between a 6 minute queue and the time it takes to load into the game and do all the pre-match stuff (hero select, wait in spawn room, etc.), you get to a point where this queue time means you’re only spending half your time actually in a game. That’s prohibitively bad for most people! You may think they should just suck it up, but the fact is that they won’t and that’d be extremely bad for the game.

You say that “ya’ll would never survive other genres,” but Overwatch is competing against games in its own genre. In other words, it’s largely competing with FPS games. And because most FPS games don’t have distinct roles that necessitate a role queue, the queue times in those games are generally extremely short. If Overwatch has long queue times and its competitors largely do not, then Overwatch will absolutely lose a huge portion of its player base to those competitors. You can wish that that isn’t true, but it is. And that’s why 6v6 would bring back an existential threat to the game.
