3CH-0 skin appears to have caused some copyright problems

If you aren’t aware, the skin’s name is a reference to the robot C-3PO from star wars

The skin was renamed to “automaton” in game, the first half of the starwatch comic was removed from the blizzard website (the second half doesn’t mention the name), and the video of the comic was removed from the overwatch youtube channel. If the starwatch event returns, expect the cutscenes to be altered as well.

Why are people always like so strict about copyrights like how does this even hurt Disney at all? How does like the existence of this even? How can anyone own this name format? You can’t own how people decide to format there words/names can you?

Disney might not have won the case anyway, but its probably not worth it for Blizzard, since the event is over anyway.

It’s likely not copyright, but rather Trademark. US law states that you have to actively protect Trademarks, or you may lose rights to the trademark. Aspirin is one of the most famous ones. Thermos, yo-yo, escalator, laundromat, trampoline, dry-ice, hacky sack, wine cooler, zipper.

In the US, trademarks must be actively protected or they will be revoked. As such, companies tend to send out Cease and Desist letters on anything that even tangentially similar to a trademark so that they can prove in court that they actively protect their trademarks. Companies on the other end of the C&D might be well within their rights, but usually opt to no go through the hassle of appealing the letter.

Weird this even happened considering “Spaceballs” exists

Spaceballs may fall into specific exemptions for parody and satire, and also they apparently got permission anyway

Does make me wonder though, if “3CH-0” was too similar to “C-3PO” to cause a trademark issue, how isn’t “Starwatch” too similar to “Star Wars”

How could they even think that this would be ‘ok’ and not deemed to be ‘passing off’ as star wars? They are a multi billion pound company with a legal department who raise cease and desist letters for this type of activity on an almost daily basis.

Would Bliz be ok with me making a comic and a game called Doloblo about killing demons from hell? With an angel called Ureal who help me with white wings?

I would have a letter through my door the next day.

i have a hard time believing theyre removing the comic stuff cause of this…

disney does not own every single combination of letters that could possibly be a reference to the protocol droid…

Disney absolutely would have lost the case on multiple grounds. It just was not worth caring about.

Well as you can see both of these links are dead

but it is possible that they’ll just change the name and put it back up

That’s completely stupid. God this country is dumb.

Disney isn’t about making good movies anymore. Disney is all about acquiring their competition so that they can keep on making bad remakes of their own movies because they can’t come up with great ideas anymore for new franchaises.

Back in the 90s Disney made great animations like The Lion King and Aladdin to now kill all of their franchaises. Look at Marvel and Star Wars.

We went from Iron Man 1 to now get movies and shows like twerking She-Hulk :joy:

Star Wars couldn’t even put Luke, Leia and Han together in a scene and made Luke an old angry hermit. The only good recent Star Wars shows/movies were Rouge One, Andor and Tales Of The Jedi. Even though Andor had a high rating it still lost money because the audience has lost all their faith in Disney.

Disney is in so bad state that they lost money at the box office for every single phase 4 project other than Spider-Man No Way Home that ironically was made by Sony lol.

Disney is desperate and it wouldn’t shock me if they would do anything to get money at this point :joy:

Disney already has a license agreement with Epic for skins in Fortnite, so Blizzard can’t touch it.

Otherwise we’d have stuff like Captain America:76, Buzz LightPharah, Snow White D.Va, Darth Reaper, and something I really would like to see… Sigma Palpatine!

This would be perfect. I love the Sigma BP line saying “UNLIMITED POWER”.

Can’t multiple games colab with Disney or how does this work?

Why should they get away with it?

Companies like Epic Games pay a lot of money to get crossovers etc

for example DC comic and Epic Games teamed up and even have their own batman & Catwoman x Fortnite comics and so many skins too…

Meanwhile Overwatch has Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman (Ninja version) and were just some cheap tacky rip off versions $0 paid

This is no indie company, they can 100% afford it.

It’s probably an exclusive agreement with Epic, definitely not an issue of money.

Well then they shouldn’t be trying to make ripoffs of DC characters if that’s the case and just wait for their contract to end or try and team up with another company, they already proved they can do that with OPM

indeed, its bli$$ard being even more pathetic and a clownfest, apparently they cant be creative and need to try making rip offs based on somebody else’s work, serves them right, they’d do exact the same without a hesitation, pathetic meme company will always be a pathetic meme company
