3 Largest problems with OW

Problem no. 1: It is a team based game we solo queue for. Don’t care how you do it, make wanting to create your own teams and play with the same people more than once the norm (that’s how you make friends and build a community). Fixes throwers and toxicity to boot; allows people to play what they want without enforcing 2-2-2.

Problem no. 2: The idea of “low skill” heroes. Balance for the bottom, useless at the top. Make them viable at the top, they dominate at the bottom. Without this, lower tiers have a semblance of balance since none of them can get full value out of heroes. High skill heroes (Widowmaker, McCree, Ana, Genji, etc.) open up as options as you climb. From the perspective of a player, getting new options feels better than a hero you worked on becoming useless. Skill is more than purely mechanical aim, you just have to be able to do a given action “better” or “worse” (unlike Mercy’s healing for example) or allows for counter play (Rein vs. Rein is a good example of being able to outplay your opponent with low mechanical aim required).

Problem no. 3: Not enough counter play and too focused on ults. More opportunities to outplay an opponent allows skill to shine and individuals to make plays. Counter play in this way is interesting. If picking a hero to counter another is the only option, that is boring and predictable. Ults that amount to a free team fight are boring and predictable. It feels better as a player to think “ah! I should have done X” or “if only I had pulled Y off” instead of “wtf was I supposed to do?”

biggest issue with OW is the fanbase.

  1. Switching heroes removes ultimate charge completely, thus punishing switches.
  2. Lack of truly new content is beyond slow, to the point of glacial.
  3. Ranked play feels more haphazard than accurate.

What’s with everyone demanding everyone stack all the time lately? If I had to go to discord and round up clanmates for a game every time I wanted to play OW, I usually wouldn’t bother.

Also, playing with friends doesn’t mean you get to play what you want all the time. It means you have to play your best thing every single time to maintain good relationships with your friends/clan.

Welp, no one uses LFG. And personally, I think it’s because you might not even get the role you joined for if you don’t have a 6 stack.

And yet that’s what people want because it’s the only way to get the euphoric feeling of what Overwatch was meant to be. Unfortunately we should never strive for the best feeling, we should think about the average feeling and whether that’s good. It’s not.

They used to have a good balance, for the most part. Only now does the problem show. Overwatch’s skill gap is far too large for a competitive game. It’s a casual game trying to be competitive.

The issue is that they didn’t account for the majority of mechanics and designed the game for accessibility and to look cool. The dev team probably thought the game took no skill and would play like rock paper scissors but in practice we get GOATs.

No one says you have to. That should just be the norm. If you want to climb past a certain point, you would probably want to, but if you just want to jump in and play the game, you are still free to as you do now.

The reason it matters is because it is a team based game… it only works properly when you work together. Currently, it is like rolling the dice. Will the people I’m matched with randomly want to coordinate? Are people able/willing to cover the roles needed? Is someone randomly going to throw or be toxic? You can’t control anything at the moment, I think the game would work much better if players had the ability to do so.

Playing with a group of people increases the likelihood of being able to play what you want to. It is better than everyone picking, and they need a role you don’t play. If you want to do something you don’t normally do, you can just queue solo or find a group where that role is needed.

Any way you slice it, it is an improvement over the current system.

I don’t think that statement is a problem; all other team-based games have solo q with optional stacking. I can see how solo q may bring some issues, but it’s not itself a problem as long as there are other ways to q such as role q.

I agree heroes shouldn’t be designed with the idea of “skill” in mind as it is more than just about aim and even subjective. I agree that Mercy kit has a low skill ceiling (game sense does not, however), and it’s about doing things/playing better. Though I disagree when you say:

Because there are changes you can make to a hero at the top that essentially do not impact the lower tiers whatsoever, provided they require skill to use/increase skill ceiling (take Mercy superjump for example). Look up trickle-down-balance, it’s an interesting idea that I agree with.

I think the game is a bit too focused on ults, at least a few unfun ones in particular like grav, shatter, nano-blade.

Why you want people learn how to counter play, when you can create tons of post in the forums begging and claimming to nerf the hero you cant counter???

That’s exactly what I am talking about (I’m specifically referring to low skill heroes). Low skill heroes can only be made viable at higher ranks without dominating low ranks through an increase of skill.

Nah, some people really don’t like stacking. Even ignoring the work involved I’d always rather not stack. I’d rather have diverse teammates than be stuck with the same teammates every round… I don’t want to have the same weaknesses every round. Plus, it’s easily to get carried where you don’t belong or be held back by subpar teammates. Finally, you get a lot of group conflict when people want to play stuff others don’t want to play (my old stack group had a guy who decided he wanted to be a Widow-n-Sombra main… that’s when I quit stacking).

Add in hard counters IMO. Hard counters essentially make this game a chore to balance.

Okay but in this case just do not have a problem with throwers, trolls, etc. You signed up for that.

What about working on your mistakes? You know, the thing that makes people capable of getting higher in the ladder.

IMO the problem is that a lot of players think it is their right to climb the ladder however it is not the case. An example:

  • You play a comp game and you do your absolute best! You rock, yay! It doesn’t matter now if you win or not, you did your best.
  • You play a second game after that. You did the same thing again, played the exact same performance.
  • So on and so on, you played 100 games in a row.

Did you deserve to climb? NO! Why? Cause you played on the exact same level each match which means you are where you belong. For climbing you need to outperform yourself frequently. This is the point where most of the players starts to flame the balance, the teammates, Jeff or anything. Everything except for the only thing that matters: their own performance.
