240hz monitor question

I’ve been trying to research this but havent gotten a clear answer. From what I understand, gsync will not work unless i cap my frames at like 235-237 or something. I’ve seen a lot of people play this game with a 240hz monitor letting the framerate uncap at 300. Is this the best way to do it? do you not need to worry about screen tearing? Or is it actually worth getting 240hz gysnc and capping the frames? Just would like to know if i can save $150 or so and get a cheaper 240hz monitor without gysnc and if i can just let my framerate be uncapped to 300 and experience smooth non noticeable tearing gameplay.

What monitor are you looking at? The Asus PG258Q has a Gsync range of 24-240hz.

Ignore Gsync. You will have 239fps instead of 240fps using normal vsync. And it looks good and smooth, no tearing

honestly the brand isnt that big of a deal for me. I’m mostly trying to figure out if gysnc is worth it at 240hz especially if my machine easily produces 300 frames no issue.

I’m asking because you said that you need to cap 235-237 for Gsync to work whereas the Asus one is advertised for Gsync to work from 24-240hz/fps.

Gsync is worth it. The only people that will tell you it is not are people who don’t have it.
There is no tearing, not sure about this 239fps, I don’t cap at that. And sometimes my machine will run lower than that, there is no tearing.

I have this one: ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q

oh, i see. Well, is capping at 240 with gsync the way to go? I see a lot of streamers letting it run to 300.

Hmm.
From my experience using 144hz Freesync monitors (with both AMD and Nvidia cards) I get more noticeable tearing from capping it at the max range (143-145hz) than from leaving it uncapped.
It’s something you have to play around with yourself.

oh, okay. But from what ive read up on, if you leave it uncapped and go above your refresh rate, gsync will turn off. So it would then be kinda useless to get it at that point?

That’s right it does turn off and that’s why some people like to turn on Vsync, so it doesn’t go above 240 and does not tear too.

What I do is increase graphics settings or render scale so it keeps the fps below the max freesync/Gsync range but still high enough to look smooth and tear free.

I have a 240hz gsync and i leave it on only because i play in windowed mode and Windows itself will force vsync otherwise. If i played full screen it would be off completely. At 240hz screen tearing rarely happens and if it does, it’s gone before you notice it. That said, 240hz is pretty much pointless. Even with a 9900k and 1080ti all OCed, i can’t maintain 200+ fps at all times. This game is not well optimized.

interesting. Ive got an RTX 2080 and i get 300 fps at high settings.

No, why would it? That’s the entire point of Gsynch… if you can truly maintain 300, it won’t make any difference.

So then leave it uncapped at 300 and buy a 240hz non gsync monitor or cap it at 240 with a gysnc 240?

Vsync adds a lot of input lag. I know tearing is slightly different on Freesync, but do
you really want to run with vsync on?

If you can get OW reliably to over 250 FPS at all times, use this for the best input lag/no tearing:

  • Uncap FPS.
  • Set monitor to 240HZ
  • Set vsync to off
  • Go to Nvidia panel/3d performance/applications and set “Fast” vsync for Overwatch.

No I don’t use it. But some people do like the 2nd poster.

I have it and its a nice to have. Not more.

does cost a lot more though. gsync ones are close to $500 where as non are in the $300 range

It’s worth having Gsync. Unless you think you’ll be able to run every game that you’ll ever play at above 240fps (definitely won’t if you use ray tracing).
Or go to 1440p 144hz and make more use out of your 2080 (imo).
