1v1s aren't a test of skill/Rank, Hero shaming

I am a top 500 zenyatta main. I’m not saying that to brag, its very vital to mention that to give you context. Sometimes I like to go into custom game and title it “1v1 a top 500” just for fun. The keyword is fun. I mostly want to interact with people because most people probably haven’t ever gotten to play with a top 500 before and I also can do a QnA.

Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. I can play every damage hero very well and am comfortable on them mechanically.

The worst part is whenever I even lose a round everyone in the chat starts to go “damn, wow” like I’m not supposed to. They don’t understand that:

  1. At that point I’ve probably played dozens and dozens of 1v1s and am fatigued, especially because after doing these sessions I just got done with many hours of comp.

  2. There is a difference between being good at overwatch (6v6 team shooter) and 1v1s.

An example is how Mei has her own set of rules in 1v1s, like baiting out cryfreeze, etc. As do many other heroes. Not going to go into that to not make this post too long.

If I kill you as McCree, I could’ve easily gotten lucky. I happened to hit one more shot than u, or u missed flash. The other way around is the same. If we 1v1 as widow, whoever clicks the head first wins. I could be a little bit more confident or lucky on widow that day and win the duel, then next time the other person does.

1v1s don’t take into account game sense, positioning, ult management, and if you played that all day it’d give you a false sense of reality on how the game is actually played.

Now onto the second part which will be shorter.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been called boosted, trash, support main, boosted zen main, I’m not good at dps because I play zen (even though I’ve gotten to gm with DPS on an alt), and just passive toxicity towards me because I lost a 1v1 or play support. It puts a lot of pressure on me to perform.

One guy 2 days ago called me a boosted zen main and wanted to 1v1 me as widow at 3am after I just got done with many hours of intense comp matches against mostly top 50 players. (I played against and with nevix, a San Fransisco shock member, 5-6 times that day, as well as playing with other top tier players) I declined and he called me scared. Lol.

It’s crazy because zenyatta is very mechanically demanding and my aim is my strongest skill, as I barely call out discords or do any other things zen can do to get value, and it’s worked.

I have stopped doing those 1v1 lobbies in custom games because of the pressure to perform and the ridiculous toxicity. I still think custom games like that are fun, just maybe not 1v1s.

Can anyone tell me a new gamemode I should play to have fun and do my QnA and other things again? You guys may have better ideas than me.

Thanks for reading!

This doesn’t really relate to the topic but I want to ask if you have any good zen tips? I’m a plat zen and my aim is pretty bad but I want to improve. I’d help but I never really play custom games except for brig shield bash only no cooldowns. That’s fun but not what you’re looking for really.

Save transcendence for enemy ultimates, especially blade. If they don’t have any ults like blade, visor, grav, etc. then use it more aggressively.

I play a lot of zen in deathmatch to practice my aim, and if I don’t play deathmatch I use practice range before just to make sure I have my aim okay. Getting good with aim is just a time based thing unfortunately. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. That’s the only way to practice aim.

Stay with your mercy or other support as much as you can so you don’t die and are able to put harmony on them so they don’t die as well. If you aren’t getting peeling for you other support which happens in low ranks because they don’t know to do so, then ask for it in chat or spam I need healing.

Always try and be doing something. This is a general tip for every hero, but it matters a lot on zen. Always try and keep your discord on someone and your harmony on someone, but most importantly always be spamming left click or right click on whatever you can. Shields, a widow, tanks, a flanker on you, it doesn’t matter. That is something I learned from JJoNaK. He always is doing damage to get his ultimate as quickly as he can. If you watch his ult meter it goes up insanely fast, a lot of times even faster than his teammates.

Keep discords on the tanks first, especially Reinhardt in this meta. You want to spam shield and discord rein to help your rein win the war between the enemy rein.

Keep your harmony on a tracer usually or a genji as much as you can if you are running a flanker hero. The way I learned that was from playing with Snillo, SoOn, and Birdring. They would always come back to me and say “I need healing” and wait for me to give them an orb. Literally every 30 seconds they’d come to me and do that, lol. Another thing you could do for your flanker is discord someone in their backline like an enemy zen and tell them in chat to go kill him. If you’re running full dive, you can discord an enemy backline member and tell the whole team that they’re discorded and to jump on them. Extremely simple and effective.

Something I learned from playing with Fissure is to use transcendence if you see an opening. This fits into the same category as using ult aggressively, but in my game with Fissure what happened is he used earthshatter and then since he got tons of people he told me to trans, I did, and we won the fight easily. Games with pros are an eye opener sometimes, as well as knowledge I’ve picked up in scrims.

I hope whoever wants tips looks at this post, and I will definitely save it for others/possibly make tweaks for others who want help.

What’s your opinion on the other supports, why do you find zen so appealing vs ana for instance

The ONLY reason I play zen instead of ana is because zen is 10x better than ana right now, and is meta. I am also a very good ana. I used to play her alot in season 3 and 4 and continue to practice her in other gamemodes. If she was meta or better than zen/mercy, I’d play her. She is on an equal level of enjoyment as zen.

Mercy is my second most played this season, I’d say I’m good at her but I find her boring to play for many hours at a time after playing her so much during the mercy meta (as she is still a must pick in gm/top 500 most of the time) and my aim is very good.

Moira is fine it’s just that I like the way zen and ana play with their mechanical reliance. I have zoned out tracers before because I was that good at dueling them. I know this because of watching streams and they’ve told me sometimes before. I like being able to pop off and I like zen’s ult as well.

Brigitte I will play if I get the chance. I’ve just put so many hours into zen naturally because of him being so good that I’ve become so comfortable on him I play him almost every game. I am a good brig and I find her fun sometimes, but often I find it hard to make as much as an impact as I do on zen. I’m better at killing tracers as zen than I am brigitte, no joke lol.

Lucio I play on maps like Lijang Gardens where zenyatta is hard to play for me, when we’re running goats, or in some cases when they’re running doomfist. I find him pretty fun, and I am pretty good at him too. I peel for my other support and don’t reddit lucio. I play more like Tobi since I haven’t played him enough to master his mechanics like boops and wallriding.

So the other supports I am good at, and if I had the chance to go pro on someone like mercy or lucio I’d take it and probably do fine, but I find zen (and ana) the most fun to play and I’ve just put so many hours into zen that I’ve mastered him so I feel like not playing zen in comp is putting my team at a disadvantage almost. Not because my other supports are bad, just that my zen is at an extremely high level.

I dunno, people can be dumb. Some are always looking for opportunities to stroke their own ego.

On a funny sidenote, I’ve been kicked from upwards of 25 Widow HS only servers for being hard to hit. Wasn’t doing amazing in elims though, mostly just being annoying. It’s unrelated aside from also being a custom game, but it’s still kinda funny.

Conclusion: People need to keep their egos intact, and what better way to do it than kick a hard to hit target from your custom game.

people will always dislike support mains no matter what game mode you’re in. The only exception is if you play ana. If you play a hero that doesn’t have to aim or is a support, minus ana again, then you better be prepared to be called boosted. doesn’t matter how good you are.

DPS mains big brain 5000 IQ aim> support mains critical thinking and decision making

But doesn’t zen require aim? lol

I mean you would think that would make a difference, but it really doesnt. DPS players are so intelligent you just have to take their word for it.

Hey there Kosi,

I understand your frustration, i think people just forget that heroes are the same who ever uses it. The person using it is top 500 or lower bronze the character still has the same skills and the same damage on each bullet, the difference is just the level or reliability at witch you can get those head shots or combos. Nothing stops you from getting lucky on widow and kill a top 500 player 4 times in a row.

I find it nice to know some players such as you actually spend some time sharing knowledge they obtained on the game to lower ranked players and i would like to thank you for that.

May i ask what server you are on ? I am on EU and am currently 2180 Sr, I don’t think i am a bad player but i don’t seem to be able to climb either so i was wondering if you had some tips and if i could try to play a bit against you so try and leech some skill of you if possible :vampire:

Anyway, thanks again and have a nice evening.

I am on NA east coast.

Mainly just play the game (deathmatch really good for mechanics, game sense can come from watching and learning or playing comp) and watch overwatch league, world cup, twitch streams, and contenders.

I had already hit gm+ by the time overwatch league came out, so what I did to improve mainly was watch APEX and even before that I watched world cup 2016. World cup 2016 was aired back when I mained winston, so miro was a huge inspiration for me, and I learned from him a lot. I would watch youtube videos and streams and other things I could get my hands on to improve. In season 4 I hit gm for the first time mainly playing tanks, hit gm season 5 playing mostly winston, and in season 6 maintained gm on main tank.

After I decided to switch roles inspirations for me were ryujehong, hagopeun, and now of course JJoNak. You can learn so much from pros and twitch streams and pro games it’s crazy. You just have to actively try and learn, and not just passenger seat it.

If you don’t know what APEX is it was a korean tournament with many of the overwatch league players in it, just with different team names, and seeing ryujehong play made me want to be like him. I wanted to be as good as him on ana and zen, so I watched vods back from world cup 2016 and learned positioning on ana and zen from many different resources, as well as from playing.

Mechanical skill came just from playing, and now it’s one of my strongest skills.

Just play and watch, and you should become better.

Something to add is in season 1 and 2 I was plat/gold. It was pretty much my first fps, at least on PC. After my friend(s) ranked up and left me, I felt the drive to improve and over time it happened. It’s very possible to climb from a low rank to a high one, it just takes time.

Why not hide your profile when you’re doing custom games and NOT name them “top 500.” You’re creating the toxicity yourself (bragging), then asking us how to prevent it? Just don’t create it. Problem solved.

If I want to do a QnA and interact with people, if they don’t know my rank why would they ask me anything or even click on the game? The whole point of me doing those custom games is to have people play live with a top 500 and ask questions. Not many people get that chance, especially casuals who chill in custom games.

The main problem is the gamemode was 1v1s. That is what caused the toxicity and that is why I asked people for opinions on what other gamemodes to try.

Generally speaking, do you want peel from dps/tanks or the other support?

imo support is the better peel than dps/tanks at my level, is that also true in gm?

I do try to actively improve every time i play and try to get better at the game, i think im getting there slowly, my aim is more steady, generally between 45 and 50% accuracy on widow, 50 to 65 on ana. That said i dont really follow the meta that much, and i pretty much suck with projectile, my aim is completely random on them so i try to stick to hitscan dps such as tracer soldier Mc cree widow and a bit of bastion here and there. I’m not a great tank but at least when i flex tank i use my shields to protect my team and dont charge in like a madman ^^’ that said, i love Ana, probably one of my favorite characters, Zen is pretty cool to but my aim on projectiles is so off I’m happier sticking to ana and a bit of brigitte.

Been playing plenty of FFA to try and be mechanically better on my characters but my main frustration is that no one joins vocal chat on EU, and if they do its to flame other players when we lose. That makes ult combos so hard to pull off and makes things ever harder when they all start to panic and run in 1 by 1 >.<

Do you know any hitscan main dps streamers or ana mains i could watch ? :x i’ll try to watch more competitive games and step up my game. I’d love to hit diamond at least for now ^-^

Mainly support, but if I’m having trouble dueling whoever is on me then usually I don’t have to ask and one of our dps turns and shoots him just to finish. That’s the only kind of peel I’d expect/need from dps.

D.Va is the only tank that can peel effectively with matrix. Recently I was playing with Crakinlakin, the off tank for Fusion University. He is one of the only d.va’s I know that matrixed me when a tracer was on me without me asking, and he allowed me to solo the tracer. Generally, though, if the backline is getting attacked the D.Va will run out of matrix pretty quick, and just shoot and kill whoever is there.

So basically unless a zarya has bubble or D.Va has matrix, there is no real peeling from dps or tanks besides killing whoever is on the backline. That is why mainly I expect the other support to heal me and I heal them back.

Thanks, while a lot of that was stuff I already know and some of it is even stuff I already do, those tips sound very useful. So yeah, thanks for taking some time to help me.

I think you’re creating your own problem. Maybe I’m a cynic, but I feel like the kind of people who would go into a custom match to challenge a top 500 player (who aren’t top 500 themselves), are people who want to be able to say, “I’ve beaten a Top 500 player in 1v1’s, which proves I belong at a higher SR than I am.”

So even tho you’re looking to have fun, they’re looking for an ego boost. And putting you down helps them with that, too.
