144hz with a 1050ti

Hey! So I just recently upgraded my gpu to a 1050ti, and I’m usinf a 60hz monitor with it. I’m considering upgrading to a 144hz monitor but I don’t really know anything about this kind of stuff.

My cpu is a Intel core i7 4970 (I think) @ 3.6ghz.
In game I get about 180fps all low settings other than texture filtering quality (set at 16x)

would this work with a 144hz monitor? Or is there anything else I need to be aware of?

You say you get 180fps in game, as long as it stays above 144fps you should have no problems with a 144Hz monitor!

Should be fine…

doing to 144 makes a HUGE difference.

You will really like the 144hz Refresh rate. A 1050ti card is very nice and you will find it improves your game. If you have the cash, try and go up to 200hz+ though. It’s even better!

My only concern was that having the monitor running could tank it’s overall performance. Maybe I’m wrong. Reddit users are scary.

The monitor will have no effect on the graphics card. If you’re getting 180fps now, then you’ll still be getting that with the 144Hz monitor.

Overwatch is very CPU intensive, and not very GPU intensive. You should be A-okay

ok! thanks for the help!

I found the increase from 60 hz to 140+ hz (I run a 240 hz monitor) to have significantly enhanced my experience and game play.

This just rubs salt in the wound of my 20fps computers

Make sure your FPS is stable during fights. Easy way to do this since you’re using Nvidia is just record a replay after a fight and watch it later. Check the FPS to make sure it stays around 150 or above during heavy firefights. If it does, I’d recommend setting your FPS cap at whatever the highest stable framerate during a fight is, that way it’s always consistent.

yep you are all set then!

hell yea! fellow 240 hz!
people say you cannot tell the difference between 144 and 240, but where I see the difference is when I am turning around really quickly, because all those frames changing the environment around me is faster

Definetly works. The best thing you can do if you want to bypass 144fps (without Vsync) is purchasing a monitor that has gsync since it will help Nvidia cards such as yours to match the actual refresh ratio with the card produced ratio.
That means that without Vsync and thanks to Gsync, even if the number of FPS drops or changes drastically you wont see any or almost any imput lag or visual dissonance (along with stuttering and tearing).

so long as it is below the monitor refresh rate. If the game goes above the monitor refresh rate, you will still get very slight clipping

Gsync isn’t really necessary, screen tearing doesn’t really happen much if at all at high framerates in my experience.

Yeah it depends. I dont go over 125, got it limited via OW settings so my Vsync is on. No stutter, no clipping. All good.

It depends. If you have a 144 and you have 180 stable FPS, not much. If you force your 144 monitor to pull of 300 oh yes there is, its not huge and its only during violent flicks or 180º turns but there is. Gsync really makes it way smooth for higher monitors and sensible framerates.

I agree, the smoothness of 144Hz makes all the difference when I play things like Mccree, I can’t have fun on anything lower.

gsync (or freesync/vsync) for me so far has not been needed at all. I’ve been able to keep OW at a constant 200+ fps and at higher framerates there just isn’t any tearing, or if their is it’s too fast for me to notice. If you can maintain 144+ fps then you shouldn’t have issues. I’ve locked my fps at 150 and there’s never been tearing, just make sure you can hold 144+ fps and it should be fine.

I also don’t think it’s really worth wasting the money, nvidia’s gsync tax is expensive. If you have money to spend, go for it, but I myself think it just adds unnecessary cost.

At 1080p you should be ok, I mean if you’re already getting up to 180fps on low.

Moving up to 144hz changed the game for me. Everything becomes easier.
