100% Disk Usage

So I guess I have a rare case or something because nothing I’ve found online has helped in the slightest. I have a fairly good PC, Intel i5-6500 3.2GHz, 8GB of ram, and a 1060 Gigabyte 6gig card. It’s weird because no other game drops frames or even passes the 60% mark on my disk, I have completely reset my pc to the point of having no files and have done several clean installs of the blizzard app. Far Cry 5, Fallout 4, and pretty much all the games I have on steam run a steady 60fps and never break that 60% point. I’ve disabled superfetch and windows search, checked with my antimalware and done pretty much any easy fix I’ve found online. I cleared cache several times hoping for different results, I deleted any folder related to blizzard and reinstalled. All these fixes had no affect, I don’t really know what to do other than to post on this board. This has never been an issue before now, I’ve had the game since 2016 and have played it on and off continuously since then and have never had any issues related to this, I would say around the time Brigitte got added to the game, maybe Moira not entirely sure was when it started eating my disk usage. When I launch the game and open task manager it shows that blizzard app is top of the list eating all the usage. I’ve never had issues with cpu but it has reached 100% while running the blizzard app and playing. In my personal opinion I think it has something to do with the blizzard app because if I close it while running the game it improves but keeping it open bogs down my game and eats my disk like crazy. After resetting my PC it improved for a while and I was able to play smoothly the only inconvenience being odd loading like it would throw me into matches instantly and models wouldn’t render. Recently I had the problem of my keyboard desyncing but after dying it fixed, I was playing reaper and my movement started acting funny almost as if you’re connection is weak and you move it keeps going without you pressing the button but my game didn’t drop frames, connection was fine, and I was able to use my mouse and shoot perfectly fine and once I died it fixed the issue. I’ve tried to queue with my friends in comp several times but for my game to crash or for it to run so slow that its impossible to play. I would like some help with this I’ve tried everything else other than posting about it. Thanks for any help in advance.

Did you use the Windows utility to check the disk?

I did when the issue started, this was before I reset my PC in hopes of fixing it. It isn’t nearly as bad as it was before I reset. Sometimes during fights it’ll stutter and I’ll drop nearly 20 frames and sometimes it’s totally fine and I don’t have any issue. I’ll try it again though once I get back from my class.

Edit: I just did the check disk, ran the fix/repair option and restarted my PC so it could repair, started Overwatch (which recently everythings been fine except when fights start) played a few matches as Reaper and Soldier on Lijiang Tower and as soon as the fight started my frames would drop to about 10-15, but then I played on the new map Busan and still experienced drops but not nearly as often as I did earlier. I don’t know why this is happening, one of my friends has had frame issues in the past where if he played longer than a few hours his frames dipped but he fixed it somehow but thats not really my issue, my issue is just frame drops and disk being overused and I’ve had this computer for about a year or two now and I’ve never had issues like this with overwatch

Hello Scoob! Sorry to hear issues are persisting for you…

Speaking anecdotally, I was experiencing very high disk usage on my own PC at home (not just in Overwatch, though, it was in general), with it sitting at 100% for long stretches. Turns out there was a Windows update waiting, and once I’d applied it, things returned to normal.

Have you checked if there are any pending Windows updates yet? We can also check to ensure your video driver is current:

Updating Your Drivers and Operating System

We can also check fullscreen optimization, which Windows seems to have widely enabled in a recent patch.

  1. Click Options in the Battle.net launcher app and choose Show in Explorer
  2. Go into the Overwatch folder
  3. Right click on the Overwatch.exe and select Properties
  4. Click on the Compatibility tab
  5. Check the box for “Disable full screen optimizations”
  6. Click Apply, then OK

Beyond this, we’d want to look over a system report for any other potential issues.

A DXDIAG can be included in a reply to the forum post.

Thanks for the help, right now I’m currently running an OS update and I checked the disable full screen optimizations option. I thought for sure I was up to date on my OS but I guess I wasn’t so hopefully this will fix. I’ll post after the update is finished, if it worked or not.

Edit: Thank you so much, I finally played my first match in a while that I didn’t drop frames. I don’t know what the fix was for people with the same issue I would recommend just doing both options, update and disable fullscreen optimization. I’m so happy that I can play OW again! This fix also just helped decrease my overall disk usage.
