🏓 Why are people posting about Hong Kong? [Explanation]

This is the first time I’ve seen Blizzard in the national news, I don’t think people have gotten a grasp on how huge this scandal is already.

Your words are meaningless. If Blizzard can get away with convincing you that the word BUY actually means to LEASE what kind of precedent do you think that sets? Not legally, but into the minds of the collective human race. You answer that question and I will wait.

Also this phrase is obnoxious but…

If this isn’t the biggest “check your privilege” statement ever. Jesus…

On the blizzard “censorship” yeah, a really high % and i honestly congratulate those who actually do care and actively do something to progress the human rights situation in china, not just HK.

They punished chung because what he did put them on a spot where no matter what they do they are losing big time, he basically f* them hard, but of course they are the meanies.

Id be more than happy with Blizz just remaining neutral in the situation instead of pushing they support and backing up the chinese government. Theres a world of difference between what you are saying and what I am saying.
Its as if the US was like we aint involved and publicly giving cash to one side of the conflict, I mean you are involved then.

you are on the wrong side of history and Mei knows that to be true.

It wasn’t for the player but it was for the platform that he chose to do it on. The punishment was clearly outlined and fair. Knowing how to simply conduct business and get yourself out of a hole dug for you by some random player doesn’t equate to cozying up to anyone and “human rights” is a fluid concept that is set by a society not some concrete set of superlaws that just automatically exist. What they view as human rights isn’t necessarily how we view things. Our outlooks on life and things are different from theirs, I’m sorry most people seem to share your sad and single-minded view of the world. Maybe if everyone was more open minded, things would actually be better, oh well.

I highly doubt the contract said “If you break this rule we will withhold any winnings and you will be immediately suspended for 12 months”

( Not that I believe even saying that would have stopped him from speaking out. )

Yeah don’t moral relativism things like rape, murder, torture, harvesting people for organs, etc.

It’s appalling.

And no, they did more than they had to do to satisfy China. Others have done less.

“If somebody said something homophobic, therefore belittling human rights, then you guys would be okay with them getting punished! But just because someone wants more rights for their country, it’s okay!?”

… Yes? Do you hear yourself? People don’t typically protest homophobic comments because at BEST it’s a very mean-spirited way of saying “I don’t want people different from me alive.” Wanting to protect and support democracy in your country is, like… entirely different. You really tried to compare an apple to a whole damn dragonfruit.

Besides, plenty of people have been over this. The contract was written in the most vaguest way so as to serve as a catch-all. Blizzard apologizes to China on weibo about how hurt the pride of their country is. They could have gave him a warning or slap on the wrist but to censor it ENTIRELY by removing VODs, firing everyone involved, etc… really easy to see who they’re protecting. China and their bottom line.

Billionaire companies don’t need your protection, trust me.

Remaining out of it would be suspending the player and giving him a fine, not banning him, taking all his earnings for the past year, firing the casters and making a post on their official twitter page in support of the chinese government; that would be a sensible thing to do by someone trying to stay out of it.
They chose not to do that, and take a side. Thats the issue.

All I know is companies gotta start looking at the Chinese government as an overclingy controlling gf/bf.

Cause one dude on the internet says Free Hong Kong, you got all that power and a large military but a gamer kid has got you shook.

There obsessive determination to try to control the internet is one of the fool’s errands that painted them into this corner leaving no wiggle room for compromise.

It’s just going to rally more sympathizers and others to go against them.

Or …maybe Hearthstone is more dangerous than we thought

The contract doesn’t specify a time period and does warn you can lose all your winnings. That said, they seldom enforce it that harshly, especially for a first offense. Most of the time both the suspensions and fines are smaller unless you’re constantly breaking the rules.

It’s not that buy means lease, it’s a matter of what you are buying, you need to learn to think more. You are set on this concept of a concrete thing, when you buy the game you are presented with a copy of the game and a contract called the ToS. The ToS says hey we are selling this game to you to use on our service and make an account to play this game, you own this game. We own the Service you need to play the game though. As long as you follow the ToS you can use the Service to play your game, but if you violate our service, we will delete and ban the account that your game key is associated with. You still own the game, you just can’t play it anymore. These kinds of issues only really pop up for online games.

I also don’t support the fact the chinese version of the public notice said

“We are very angered and disappointed at what happened at the event and do not condone it in any way. We also highly object the spreading of personal political beliefs in this manner.”

Which was followed by

“We will always respect and defend the pride of our country.” ( China )

Not remotely impressed.

I’m embarrassed you think Blizzard did anything right in this.

This community is clearly completely and utter garbage.

Considering the fact the “Do you not have phones” thing lasted over a year and Diablo fans are still hostile over it.

I think banning a player and firing two casters as well as defending a communist/tyrannical government that crushes free speech is a bit worse. It won’t last a week, this will probably be a permanent mark for years to come for everyone involved with Blizzard.

Same. They did more than neutral compliance and people shouldn’t be defending this garbage.
