If Mei was moved to the Tank role, one complaint is that she doesn’t have enough HP to be considered a Tank.
In particular, she’s instantly dead from one sniper headshot.
So here’s an idea to fix that, with as minimal a change as possible.
Mei
- Mei moved to the Tank Role
Iceblock:
- If Iceblock is not on cooldown, when Mei’s health goes to 0HP, Iceblock will automatically activate.
Result:
This makes Mei resistant enough to burst damage to be considered a Tank, without substantially changing her existing playstyle.

How do you use an ability when you have 0 HP

No… No no no no. Why? That’s like another life on a cooldown disregarding Mercy…
How about we do what they should’ve done on launch, and move her freeze to a resource making the primary just a 55DPS beam? This’d make it so she actually has to choose to use her resource wisely instead of spraying and praying but having it work anyway.
We don’t need to make her a Tank we just need to deal with her ability to impede the entire tank roster.
I think a wall nerf is all we need.

I think all we need is just the wall HP to be reduced to 275 per pillar, not small enough for one person to burst down comfortably, but weak enough to crumble quickly to any sort of focus fire.

Would you prefer they give Mei 350HP instead?
Since if it wasn’t obvious, the goal here is to figure out what it would take to make Mei into a Tank.

It amuses me how everyone considers changes that would move a hero from DPS to tank to be straight buffs, as if tanks are supposed to be just better than DPS.
Mei is fine.
She is a CC based DPS hero and should remain as such.

Elaborate on that one, Frost.
How exactly would you got about it?
Idk what you heard, but the bird is the word.

I think they should just give her like 300-400 HP. We don’t need to lower her skill floor even more.
Lower hp per pillar like doc said. Or maybe a straight cooldown nerf. In a YO video of all places they made a good point. When you break wall yourself as mei it’s on a longer cooldown than when the enemy breaks it. That should be reversed to me. Or maybe they could do a combination of all of these. We have the experiemental card coming soon so stuff like this could be added
Simple. Her freeze becomes a resource like Dva’s that charges up over time. Her primary would be a 55DPS beam that doesn’t do any other form of CC, then she could choose to activate her resource and freeze the target, it’d deplete fairly quickly, although slow enough to allow some slight leniency in the freeze.
Button mapping would be maybe something like she presses left click to activate the beam and pressing right click simultaneously would activate the freeze resource and attach the freezing property onto the beam.
The idea of this is to make it so Mei can’t just spray you with her beam and guarantee the freeze, it’d make it so she’d have to play her cards right with her resource and accurately aim you down. It’d also put a stop to freezing someone again and again.
Rough concept and she could receive other changes if she needed them, it was mostly an attempt to get rid of a pet peeve of mine where she has CC on her primary. As I think CC on a primary weapon is a big no-no in game design.
If you wanted to make Mei a Tank
HP : 300
Mei’s Endothermic blaster
Deals 40 dps beam
80 damage icicles 1.5× Crit multiplier
(120 damage headshots)
Less walls more often
3 pillars of 300 hp on a 7 second CD.
Cryo Freeze now overheals, granting up to 100 temporary armour.
Blizzard now has a 15% less duration but a 10% increase in radius.

It’s not a popular opinion but I’ve long been of the same mind set
I’d argue to keep the slow effect on her primary- but have the freeze be on a cooldown. Being able to hard stun an opponent (while also being able to chain those hard stuns back to back to boot) with your primary because they were in range for a second and change, regardless of how balanced the character is (or isn’t), is always going to be frustrating for a playerbase.
Another unpopular opinion: I also feel mei shouldve been an off tank.

Would we keep the ramp-up of the freeze as is or just have it be a lower hard cap like 30% ramping to 50%?
Since if we’re keeping the slow on her primary I don’t feel it should freeze you down to 30% movement speed.
I kind of thought this too. I remember her old design that looked a lot less “Cute” and a lot more edgy so to speak.
Delete wall entirely and give her a new ability.
No amount of tweaks in the rest of her kit will ever make wall a not broken ability for a dps character.
We shouldn’t have a tank with a multi freeze either. I can’t imagine how many Mei’s there would be due to taking up a tank slot but practically being a dps. She would be the new DPS Moira.
It’d force even more nerfs. So we should just delete wall. It’s her tankiest ability.
Without it she might be a dps. Haha.
I’d be all in favor of removing the ability to freeze with her primary and keep it as a slow. She could still get a ton of value out of slowing opponents but she’d be less oppressive to play against.
Ooo I like this alot. The values could be tweaked ofcourse but I agree on how this would make her feel better to play against. Ideally we’d want to redistribute her power to her other parts of her kit rather than dumpster her with the nerf hammer.
Couple this with a wall change like:
and I think we’d have a pretty balanced version of Mei!
(oh, and get rid of multi-freeze)
