“your rendering device has been lost”

I’ve been getting this error message a lot this month and I don’t know what’s causing it. Everything is up to date, the game, the gpu, windows updates everything is good. Overwatch is the only game I’ve ever gotten this error message from and it’s super annoying because I play a lot of comp and it hits me randomly mid match and I have to completely restart my computer because it freezes. This happens maybe 1-3 times a day or every other day.

What’s even more annoying is it seems to happen a lot on games that’s I’m losing and when I join back there’s about 10 seconds left I pick my character leave spawn obviously don’t make it to point in time, game ends then I see I’m suspended. Which doesn’t make sense to me since I came back before the game fully ended but whatever. It happens on games I’m winning as well but it pops up more on losing games.

So does anyone know what’s causing this or how to fix it? I’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and also repairing the files and nothings fixed.

Hey there,

So the “Rendering Device Lost” error is exactly what it sounds like. The game client lost access to needed GPU resources and had to close. Since this is happening frequently I recommend avoiding competitive until it is solved. Any penalties or losses you suffer cannot be undone or modified.

You’ve covered some of the potential causes of this but I have some additional things you can try.

Let’s reset the in game user options:

  1. Right click Windows Start
  2. Open File Explorer
  3. Open Documents
  4. Delete the Overwatch folder and empty the Recycle Bin.

(This will delete any unsaved/saved highlights so if you wish to preserve those, save and then move them from the videos folder before deleting the Overwatch folder.)

We will want to run the repair tool on the game client: Blizzard Support - Repairing Battle.net Games

Try running your system in selective startup mode: https://battle.net/support/article/200483

Create a new administrator account: Blizzard Support - Creating a New Administrator Account

Once the account is created, shut down the computer, wait 60 seconds, restart, log into the new profile and try the app/client.

If that doesn’t solve the issue, then I recommend submitting a ticket with an msinfo attached for further investigation. (instructions for collecting that msinfo report will be on the form.)

Why does the game need to be closed when TDR in the first place? Lost rendering device? The video driver is restored within a second, why can’t the game keep working without closing? Crashing the game for this ridiculous reason should not be a case in a competitive based game.

Agreed. Plus telling me not to play ranked till its fixed is a little dumb, because it happens so randomly, it hasnt done it to me in like 2 days but I know its going to hit me with it at some point outta no where. Im not gonna stop playing a game mode because yall have a broken game. I googled the issue and its something people have been experiencing since the launch of OW2 and a little at the end of OW1
