It’s an impressive milestone.
And it goes to show that the game isn’t dead like so many forumites like to claim.
I’m inclined to believe probably half of that is alt accounts…but agreed that either way the game is faaaaaaaaaaaaaar from dead
It may have 100 billions and it still wouldn’t matter if hardly anyone is even playing.
Probably using accounting shenanigans here.
I totally believe 100 million+ have played Overwatch at some point.
But no, not currently. Sounds like a bone thrown to investors.
Over 100 million players logging in! Overwatch is the king of Esports! Counter Strike is next!
It’s a load o
Game isn’t dead but it certainly doesn’t have that many players.
True, could be alt accounts. I wouldn’t say half though. I think the amount of people who bother with alt accounts would have to be in a minority.
But yeah, game is far from dead. Being able to queue and get into a game in minutes has always shown me that, although for competitive queues can be longer depending on how many people you’re eligible to queue with, so experiences there will vary.
Its counting everyone thats ever logged in since launch. Not MAUs or they would have just said that.
I call BS, I bet money a lot of those accounts are smurf accounts. With the game being free to play, its absurdly easy to make multiple accounts.
Would be super believable even without alt accounts if we got the vision from 2019…
also could you imagine the excitement if a netflix animated series and even a pixar animated movie of overwatch
i wish heh
maybe disney should have bought overwatch instead of microsoft
It doesnt matter if a billion people install the game and play one single match.
If there are 100m players, how come I keep getting matched with the same players every day in any que?
Define “players” is that just copies sold/downloaded?
100 mil players, but they can’t make the matchmaking algorithm work properly with proper restrictions without making the queue times 15 minutes. Either way it’s a load of shidon
I wonder how many of this are active & has unique users.
This is exactly what I was thinking.
How many are actually active?
How many are alt accounts?
How many are just folks who joined but didn’t stick around?
How many are employees?
etc.
There is zero context to that number.
It is a marketing technique.
If you consider their “MAUs” metric.
Any platform you log in your account can be considered one user.
"Monthly Active User (“MAU”) Definition: We monitor MAUs as a key measure of the overall size of our user base. MAUs are the number of individuals who accessed a particular game in a given month. We calculate average MAUs in a period by adding the total number of MAUs in each of the months in a given period and dividing that total by the number of months in the period. An individual who accesses two of our games would be counted as two users. In addition, due to technical limitations, for Activision and King, an individual who accesses the same game on two platforms or devices in the relevant period would be counted as two users. For Blizzard, an individual who accesses the same game on two platforms or devices in the relevant period would generally be counted as a single user. In certain instances, we rely on third parties to publish our games. In these instances, MAU data is based on information provided to us by those third parties, or, if final data is not available, reasonable estimates of MAUs for these third-party published games. "
I would guess steam, gfn(maybe?) and pc would be counted by 1, while switch, ps, xbox as plus one each.
If you log in once in the month or at least the number of times of the timeframe used on different platforms. You could inflate the data.
So, 100m isn’t exactly hard to achieve considering how much banned players they did on banwaves. Which were roughly 5k per week. If you consider 4 weeks in a month with 12 months you get about 240k bans in a year. At september 2023 they mentioned 250k bans.
That would represent 0.5m players in an year from bans alone. Considering that at launch they had 35m (MAUs?). In a year and a half(roughly) they got almost 3 times the “launch value”. Also mentions “ow community” could hint the total number of accounts created instead of actual players. Which if you sun the ow1 sales plus ow2 newer players the 100m also doesn’t appear to be far off.
So, the number itself could be a metric of total accounts not exactly Active players. I wouldn’t fixate too much on the number tbh. I would rather wait their quarterly report if they actually do it.
so lets assume there are 90 million players. Let also assume 15 million player * spent $9.99 = $150 million
sooo… can we please use some of that money to help get solo queue only now??? can we please only get players in stacked queues now please?
