It’s both. DPS players going into tank queue are going to generally stick to heroes that feel familiar to them, and that’s going to be the DPS-centric off tanks, particularly Roadhog.
And yeah, a lot of tank players are tired of playing barrier tanks after they repeatedly get dumped on, so they’re going to play the tanks that are still fun (or just quit)
Creates the perfect storm to get a lot of off tanks and still have a near-instant tank queue
the thing is, a lot of players have this preconceived notion of how tanks should play and what to play at all times.
when they see tank, they see barrier, someone who will block spam, someone who will block ultimates, someone who will block one-shots.
and that’s about it.
they don’t see tanks as a whole, how they actually function in different circumstances.
I don’t mind off tanks, but I admit when there’s a Widow, or a Hanzo, or an Ashe shooting us like fish in a barrel, it would be nice if someone provided us some cover so the rest of us can do our jobs.
I mean, Roadhog pretty much is. With Dva, I guess it depends on how you play her.
Either way, I don’t care if someone decides to run two off-tanks. Just don’t have the gall to complain about anyone else’s picks or performance when you’re probably the main reason it’s going wrong if it is. If you get two off-supports and they can’t keep you healed, well, maybe they don’t want to be your “heal bots.” Tough luck I guess.
Sure they can, a Widow providing no value and just insta dying from spawn is feeding ult, while a Hog who may be taking damage but stays up and gets picks is at least providing value…just as an example
and I can understand that, this thread is more for those who have been spamming the forums calling off tanks feeder, throwers, trolls, dps players in disguise etc…just bc they won’t play what the complainer wants
im not talking about the tanks themselves being dps- like, im talking about how some toxic babies call tank players “queue dodging dps players,” when many of us are actual tank players…we just don’t want to play shields…that doesn’t make us dps players
It honestly depends on what you are doing, like with Roadhog, if you are using your hook as a means of yanking supports away from their team, or countering flankers. Alright then
Or if you are basically being a gate keeper with him, fair enough
But it really depends on what you’re actually doing with a hero and if it’s actually valuable.
A lot of people don’t understand what a Tank’s job is, and it’s not kills.
Didn’t mean this for the player side but rather the design of the non-barrier tanks. Roadhog as an example he has no protective ability for his team but just the fear of knowing his combo deals massive damage and he will likely win a damage race.
Hog was designed as an off-tank. Generally off tanks have high damage to secure kills and essentially make a specific space dangerous to be in. If you are in a 15M range of a super charged Zarya you are pretty much dead.
Hogs Hook enforces a space of 20M and allows Hog to protect his team at the same time.
Also his Ultimate is not a damage dealing Ult. It leaves him completely vulnerable and pushes targets away from the damage. If you don’t pin someone with it it is unlikely you will confirm the kill.
It’s an area denial Ult which is very common for tanks.
Winston, WB, D.Va, and arguably Orisa all have area denial Ults. When they drop you either wanna hit the deck to avoid getting killed or you are forced out of an area.
Only Rein, Zarya, Sigma have Ults that are arguably dps Ults since they control and secure kills the best.
I only assume that from Hog players that plays Hog no matter what. It’s a pretty safe assomption to think they are dps players trying to avoid queue time. It’s not all Hog players, but I don’t think i’m wrong when i’m saying most of the Hog players on the game to this day are dps rather than dedicated Off-tank players.
