Quickmatch Replacement

I really dislike the idea of a limited hero pool. When I play a tank in QM (and I often do), it is because I want to work on a specific tank, or just go with a comfort pick to have fun. There are some tanks I just don’t enjoy that much, and if the choice of three includes two of the tanks I am not interested in (or worse, all three), then I just won’t be playing a tank that week. I play Johanna and ETC all the time in SL, and I don’t enjoy playing Stitches, so if I can’t play Anub’arak to test him out after the changes, Mal’ganis to try out some other talents, or Tyrael because he is a ton of fun, I may as well practice a mage or just do draft.

Do you want to discourage even the tank mains from playing QM?

Add more roles, adjust matchmaker, whole QM fixed.
Not so hard.

I think the main problem is the random matching based on current roles.
4x mage + varian vs 2 tanks, raynor genji and tracer is below the fun. But hey, both teams have ranged assassins right?

Adding more roles to heroes to specify them better could make the matchmaker better at matching the games

Yes, we’ve been though this before and people weren’t willing to wait an extra 30 second to 2 minutes. The OP’s idea would be great if the game had a huge population as you could have two separate queues.

As weird as it seems, many love QM just as it is, it’s always been the most popular PVP mode, way ahead of ranked.

Because they know of nothing better perhaps? Or nothing better was attempted?

So essentially, you are saying that what is preventing Blizzard from making Quickmatch a better experience is because of the low population?

No, because I like the weird comps and being able to play exactly the hero I want to play. Weird comps and difficult maps actually teach me how to be a better player overall. If I always had a healer, I wouldn’t be encouraged to test my limits as a tank. If I always had a tank, I wouldn’t have as much incentive to be hyperaware of my positioning as a ranged assassin.

Always playing with the “correct” comp starts to feel static and boring to me after so much time. I love having something surprising and challenging after playing the same few heroes in SL over and over. It is the same reason I enjoy playing brawls.

That’s you, but is it the best experience overall? Most people would strongly disagree with you and would prefer having a decent comp.

Hence the idea of pools to force players to adapt and get out of their “safe-zone”. To me that is way more fun than what most people do (play same 10 heroes only). It forces creativeness and trying new things.

I enjoy it too, but I mostly just play that when I’m not 100% (drunk)

That is the reason they gave for merging Hero League and Team League to become Storm League. The population was too small to support two modes in ranked.

I told you and others have told you, they did attempt to improve the matchmaking in QM in 2018, it resulted in slightly higher queues form 30 to 2 minutes. People flooded the forums here and on Reddit with complaints so they rolled back the improvements.

I wasn’t one of the people who complained, I liked the changes, but apparently many people didn’t. If the population in 2018 made queue times higher in QM with a small change to matchmaking, that they had to reverse course, I can’t see your idea working now.

Good thing there are draft modes for that.

Of course preferences are subjective, but when the majority of people show the same preference, that is a good indication that there is something objectively sound about a design.

And as far as getting out of my “safe zone” is concerned, it should be something that is done voluntarily. If it is forced, it is more likely to discourage people from a particular mode. I don’t play Stitches because I do not enjoy his play style. When I play QM, it is mostly because I can choose exactly what I want to play. I have ARAMs to force me into picks I wouldn’t normally try.

But again, they changed towers, maps and heroes, XP globes and that is fine (They wanted a change in gameplay), but changing the mode is somehow forbidden?
We should not accept mediocrity in fear of backlash from keyboard warriors (Vocal minority) on the Forums. People generally do not like change, initially. But something needs to be done as QM is just a miserable experience atm, nobody that I play with play it for anything else than trolling and trying weird things. Yet it’s the most popular mode. Randomness is not fun (to me), structure and the ability the have a consistent experience is what would make me play QM again.
I like the idea of being able to pick a hero and get into a match quick just for fun, but I’m very competitive, and I can’t have fun in QM as it is currently, it takes just 1-2 bad games to ruin my gaming session, should we not try and reduce that?.

It is fun for the majority, like it or not, QM is THE mode for PVP in HOTS. They have unranked draft mode already for a casual draft setting, maybe if they removed URD for your idea it could work.

Changing things like XP, Maps and Heroes does not have the same impact as competing queues for different game modes. That’s already been proven as fact with Ranked play, they were not my words, it was the Devs who said the population was too small to support both HL and TL so they merged into one.

My point is that maybe the most popular game mode is actually bad and that is one reason why this game’s population is so low?

Not necessarily, if that was the case you would have more people playing the two different ranked modes, but you don’t have that. Your idea is halfway between ranked/ARAM and QM, who is to say it will appeal to more people the QM currently does?

I mean, if you don’t like it, play one of the other modes? Mind you, I didn’t have a problem with the forced comps for the brief period they tried it, even though it did lengthen my queue times, even as a tank. The main issue is that the people who complain the most about QM seem to be the ones who are contributing most to the problem of bad comps by only playing the comp dependent heroes.

The issue isn’t how the system works, but the fact that people just don’t like playing tanks, and to a lesser extent, healers. Forcing them to play tanks won’t work, and encouraging people to play tanks with extra XP hasn’t worked. People just don’t seem to enjoy the role (weirdos!). Some of it is the stress of feeling like you have to be a leader when tanking, and some of it is just how poorly people treat tanks, especially new tanks, in most games, not just HotS.

I do wish there were some sort of tutorial mode where people could try roles in a training environment, and I really really wish people wouldn’t be donkey-chapeaus to people who are trying to learn things in QM or URD. Ah well, if wishes were horses…

LOL, best way to put it

I only play SL because I cannot stand QM’s players and unfair games. SL has unfair games too, but it’s because of players, not the system.

This is very true because as you put it

I am a great tank if my team actually follows me and follows up on my plays. I tend to stick to bruisers and assassins because I can have a larger effect on the game’s outcome as of late. Every time I try to lead and shotcall, there is always one or two wankers who says nothing and doesn’t go with the call, then we fail, and then they call me bad for dying and making a dumb call (That would have worked if he just went along with my call).
So yes, I do not like to play a tank for that exact reason, only difference is, majority of players are not confident or have the personality (more introverts play this game than extroverts) to lead effectively. I can lead, but I can’t trust my teams to follow consistently and therefore it’s too frustrating of a role to play.

Agreed 100%

Sound like a cluster of bulls. If you want team comp, either you play draft or you play in a party. Or both.

Being picky on which map you want to play never gonna make you better at this game. You don’t want to lose? Go find your comfy zone in vs AI.

Honestly, I’d probably just never play that mode at all. If I was interested in “picks” and “drafts”, I’d just play ranked. If I’m not in the mood for such things then I just wouldn’t play the game at all.

QM is a trash mode because of the players.

When the run off the mill QM player want:

  • Less than 10 sec queue
  • play the ranged assassin or pub stomp , bruiser of their choice

BUT they want to force

  • the map
  • the tank they want on someone else
  • the healer they want on someone else
  • the picks their team and the other one have so that they are never countered
  • facing solos everytime

This is laughable.

Those guys should understand that all they are going to get is 10 sec matches 5v5 assassins.
The only thing QM complainers can and must get is to make sure the buddy system that matches you with low level or 30%wr to help carry them up dies.

They lost the right to have any other input the moment they threw forced comps under the bus while it was in the best state it was likely going to be .

Also i dislike your system.

Why would i have to choose from a pool when i already try to make that mode less trash when i play tank or heal to make 5v5 assassins fests better?

Why shouldn’t those QM whinners who only pick assassins and are not happy with the result go to brawls or vs AI instead?

No, guy, QM is popular because, you guessed it, it’s quick. It’s not about “something better.” It sucks because all of you people flooding its ranks love to pick assassin, so most comps are hodgepodge of whatever heroes happened to be laying around. And realistically, I think most of its players realize a key lesson all of you have to realize:

If you don’t like the mode, don’t play it.

Unfortunately, Blizzard and the majority of the players base value quantity over quality.

However, I think a blind draft mode could be doable. I’d do it like this: once a match is found, both team enters a 30 second draft.

-Pick in any order
-Pick any hero
-No bans
-No map voting
-Can’t see what the enemy team is doing
-Match begins after 30 seconds or when both teams have selected their heroes

Now that is an interesting idea. I would try it. Just make sure the map rotates with enough variety. I love Haunted Mines the most, but I don’t want to play it every other map.
