When both teams are just approaching each other, what do you do with the oil? Nothing at all for the moment? Max range? In front of your team to discourage enemy engages?
But I go Adhesive Petroleum - to slow targets even when I set my fire on oil after Stun like true professional Blaze.
If I have Nanomachine Coating and they have ranged AA, I try to tag them with it. If not, I drop it where I can either slow them or at least restrict their movement to make it easier for my ranged assassins to start poking them down.

My latest solo queue SL match was on Braxis today, arguably Blazeās strongest map, and I drafted him and ended up as the main tank (we had Sonya in the top lane). By great good luck, my team did know how to play with a Blaze. When you play him as a main tank, remember you are there to set up your assassins and protect your squishies, and if your team follows that lead, amazing things will happen. Our Tracer ended up 11-13-0 as people who are constantly slowed and stunned are easy pickings for her.
And although I still recommend Combustion as the safer ult, this sort of thing never gets old.
Sorry Rag, good try.
In all honesty, I like his default skin the most, in red color.
But good job, I so far failed miserably trying to tank with Blaze in solo SL.
All of his skins are good, but I use the Fel Reaver skin mostly because I have played WoW for years, and still have traumatic memories of hitting Hellfire Peninsula for the first time, and getting absolutely squashed by one of those.
Tanking with Blaze in solo queue SL really is a crap shoot, because he wonāt be able to get kills on his own, so if your team isnāt working with you, he can feel fairly ineffective. When that happens, you have to play him fairly defensively and just hope you can keep your team alive.
