How to fix Nova

Keep in mind that even Kerrigan was not all that unique back in 1998 as she had a mix of other unit’s abilities which include:

  • Personal Cloaking(Terran Ghost and Wraith)
  • Ensnare(Zerg Queen)
  • Consume(Zerg Defiler)
  • Psionic Storm(Protoss High Templar)

Defence drones do not have to be a heroic and you can still have them

It’s funny because Lava Wave does NO damage to structures whatsoever

Of course it would do ridiclous amounts of damage to make up for Nova standing still

Another reason why Nuclear Strike would feel right on Nova is because she had it in the HOTS Cinematic

Balancing around incompetence is a bad idea

Balance should always be a mix between being fun and fair while assuming a player is skilled and experienced

If something is fair but unfun it’s not something people are gonna wanna play

And if it’s unfair you just get whiners but most whiners are incompetent and can train their skills further to get better but choose not to because they are weak

I have yet to meet a hero so blatantly overpowered in this game that I could not counter in at least some way

But they can only be the truly potent and in need of balancing or risk being OP if they are on an ultimate level cooldown,
unless we want another Icy Veins Talent Tier we should avoid putting these on the talent tree elsehwere.

Not directly but leaving minions and potentially merc’s uncontested by enemy minions to wail into structures can do some work.
especially when you talk global power with an enemy that might not be able to respond and clear themselves.

Okay 2 things

  1. balancing that kind of damage is already a nightmare and
  2. Triple Tap is already proving Nova standing still is hard to balance.

Every single person who has EVER played this game will be inexperienced at some point, and if something is ONLY balanced around experience then that player isn’t going to have a good time. and what do you think happens when new players maybe not even sold on a game yet have a bad experience with something that takes well over 10 games without looking at outside resources to figure out how to deal with?

There are several ways to deal with this concept such as playing to instincts (this is the main reason I advocate range indicator on living bomb) and similar

However despite what you and people in your camp think the experience that a new player has HAS to be taken into account, obviously we can’t get rid of everything, but if a hero like Nova or Valeera are allowed the powers they would need to be viable in high level play are not in some way compensated for in lower tiers of play then there is going to be problems as these heroes would drive away people.

Balance is not easy and all skill levels have to be accounted for.

You can’t find it but yes I have, I studied the concepts behind balance though in my case it was much easier because it was a puzzling platformer revolving around resource management

And enemies would know Nova’s nuke is coming due to a red dot and “Nuclear launch detected!”

How is that for balance?

How is someone standing still something that needs balance?

Dark Souls is a game notorious for it’s difficulty with multiplayer elements that is globally famous with people paying for it constantly despite how frustrating it can be

The idea is that you learn as you play

You learn from failure

If frustration is enough to get you to quit a game then you were never cut out to play it to begin with

Quality and depth of a game should not have to lower based on the incompetence of it’s players

The game needs a proper tutorial that explains how to play basic roles and counter them along with showcasing mechanics like cloak and reveal

People who choose to skip the tutorials do so at their own expense

My opinion can only be false if it really is not my opinion at all

She already has oom issues. It’s ridiculous how fast she runs out of mana and not get a single kill.

not as much as you’re probably suggesting, and what would NEED to be the case, probably double that to make what you’re suggesting viable.

are both weaknesses that need to be accounted for when coming up with balanced output for the ultimate.

That is also a single player game with what can become obvious mechanically speaking ways out, and is just bad design that became a cult classic to a bunch of masochists
not exactly the norm for multiplayer games.

That’s great and all but remember we’re talking about games here GAMES, while yes video games especially PVP games will be competitive and thus frustrating there is a difference between getting killed by say a Zul’jin and a Nova or a zeratul.

That comes to a concept of Interactivity,
The idea is that something should be both fun to play as and play against, pubstompers aren’t fun to play against. the idea is to maximize the net fun for the playerbase. and this INCLUDES the newcomers, obviously they are going to lose they are going to struggle but having things that pubstomp and feel OP until they figure out the mystical counter does no favours

You want new players to atl east feel like they have a chance which against true pubstompers like a pre-nerf Nova or Valeera they do. and those heroes if balanced solely for high t ier paly they would be beyond repugnant and an et negative in the interactivity

this is what we want to avoid. we want to have fun defeats (in a manner of speaking).

If quality overall has to go down to avoid things that are uninteractive to extremes to newcomers you did something very very wrong early on in development.

Ghosts dropping nukes are also counterable in StarCraft

In an online game where so many are getting pubstomped people are likely to write guides and help each other out

All of the players would become more competent at countering pubstomping heroes and this is exactly what we want

For players to grow and get better

Considering we live in a world where almost everyone wants to win at everything they do I say you are wrong here

next time you play HOTs compare the feeling you get when a KTZ kills you from 100% with his combo to the feeling you get when, let’s say you got outdueled in lane as the solo laner (let’s say Imperius vs Artanis or something and Imp wins but not without a fight)

Obviously losing isn’t going to feel “fun” but there is a difference between rage inducing and just “okay I lost” and pub stompers fall into the category we don’t want.

Personally, I’d just like to see the devs take another crack at stealth. The fantasy was really watered down compared to the old stealth…and even that wasn’t the best choice for the game either.

I agree this this. That was one flaw with the old system.

Maybe keep current stealth (just call it something different) for a few heroes in which it works well enough already so they don’t need to be buffed/nerfed accordingly. As for Nova specifically, I think just starting fresh with her concept like Tassadar would really be best.

Nukes are high risk high reward and highly skilled players mostly focus on winning without taking risks

But nukes do happen

PVP elements were available since Demon’s Souls

They were quite heavy in Bloodborne too

  1. Demon’s Souls
  2. Dark Souls 1
  3. Dark Souls 2
  4. Dark Souls 3
  5. Bloodborne

All of these games cannot be flukes when most of these releases have been released on MULTIPLE platforms MULTIPLE times

If KTZ or ANY hero is able to kill you at 100% and you are not Abathur you are doing something wrong

The way you talk makes me think that you’re actually quite bad at this game and want Heroes of the Storm to lower in quality to cater to your level of bad play

Triple Tap is also high risk due to rooting NOva in place
How does that work out for the ultimate?

Tell me, which feels worse, getting murdered from 100% or close to by KTZ’s full combo (do you want the math I can give it to you, it happens)
Or getting out dueled by a bruiser like Artanis

That’s exactly why Nuclear Strike should replace Triple Tap

Nova should be taking a risk when calling for a nuke

Is the reason why it became far more popular than other difficult single player games

Forgive me if I miss anything, but won’t having both her heroics be “Precision Strike” and “Nuclear Strike” be visually too similar since both are basically nuking something from the sky.

Nova has to stand still and channel Nuclear Strike just like Ghosts in StarCraft 1

She takes no risks for Precision Strike

Visually both are area of effect attacks but Nuclear Strike would do far more damage and have a much wider area of effect

Raynor basically has two flying ships assisting him in both of his heroics but one is vastly larger and does way more damage
