I created an account to test what bronze was like. I intentionally lost as many games as possible to get to the lowest rank possible.
TLDR; if you’re in Bronze, you don’t know how to play the game.
At first, going from Gold down to Silver was easy, just play like sh!t and we lost. Once in Bronze though, at times it became much more difficult to lose. Unless I went total AFK (which I tried to never do), I was still winning many games… eventually I gave up on trying to get to rock bottom as I was only losing a couple points and didn’t want to play another 100+ games just to prove a point.
When I started playing properly again, I, like you, was only gaining a few points at a time. But it didn’t take very long and I was back in Silver, and soon the number of points I was gaining was back up to the 200 range. My win rate in Bronze (after I started trying) was over 90%. Some games you still just lose due to multiple AFK’ers… but that’s how it goes.
My advice I guess would be to watch the good players on YouTube and actually take their advice. I can’t tell you how often the Bronze players would be giving the same tired advice, “don’t attack the tanks!” was one of my favourites, as though tanks can’t die or something…
Perhaps just show your games to a better player and ask them to critique your game.
Ranked is just broken. Play an old account and you will never move up. Take a new one and you can easily rank up in just a few matches. Even easier by playing just a few heroes like Greymane with which you can make plays on your own. Once you dare to pick healers in low ranked though you are doomed because you have to rely on others to win. Same with tanks.
I have watched some pro players lately that started a new account and climbed. They picked only a handful of heroes, refused to play healers and tanks and then after a while team up with 4 others and just steam rolled.
Once Blizzard has defined where your rank should be you would have to play hundred of matches - and win them - to get your MMR moving. No one has fun doing this. That’s why smurfing is the way to go in this game. I guess it’s just numbers padding by Blizzard. This way they can report lots of accounts on their games to their shareholders.
well im 1 win in last 19 games and im the very bottom of bronze5. I’m not a great player, but i’m not that bad either. (edit: by ‘not that bad’ it means im almost getting mvp in these losses…or close to it.) It’s just dumb down here. I agree…at higher levels you can almost afk and still win, because you have some other good players compensating. but in bronze hell…its just so random. and not to mention the smurfs…which you admitted to doing yourself.
MVP is meaningless. It has nothing to do with good gameplay. You can basically lane almost the full match and avoid deaths and could become MVP. Good play means two things: First you need to understand macro play and if you have mastered that you can tweak your micro play. The higher you move in ranks the only difference there is micro play because all of those players know how to macro. In lower levels though people don’t get macro play. They brawl and hunt kills and don’t understand to soak. They don’t know to get camps and when (GM players basically stand at the camp already at the 1 minute mark when they first spawn). People don’t even know what solo laners are and how to group and roam. They play heroes like Sonya, which is one of the best solo laners but don’t go into the solo lane and if they do, they don’t do camps in between.
Forget about MVP and try to play the map. You don’t have to hit every skillshot if you outsoak the enemy, put pressure on every lane and then in fights focus the right targets.
I wonder if there is a similar system for grand masters players, if the top of the top only loose few points and win more than 200 points.
so im in bronze 5, at the very bottom and im losing almost all of my games…and it would take me hundreds of wins / games to even get to bronze 4…so i guess it’s time to quit this game
It’s more like the opposite or at least was in HL so few years back. I haven’t played actively SL and never been GM there, but I imagine nothing has changed. The higher you climbed the less points you got in GM after certain point. So eventually it reached a point where you would need 2-3 wins just to even out single loss. It was a great encouragement for players to make smurfs since there was no feeling of progress or climbing anymore once you reached that point
Just wipe the MMR with every season and place everyone in bronze 5. Good players will climb, bad players won’t. To not ruin the fun for the top players they could make it so everyone being diamond and up will start there. So even a GM has to fight his way up again from diamond.
Every season should be a new run. Blizz never has reset the MMR, not even when they reworked ranked play a lot. No wonder that some players on old accounts won’t be able to move out of their ranks. Their MMR is basically set in stone. This is just a dumb system.
Or make a new account with the same name
While I agree that performance based MMR should be a thing, another part is league demotion.
SC2 implemented this and it helped a lot.
Theres definitely a ton of in-house sources of inspiration to help them fix their current competitive scene. I’m confident that they’ll figure something out.
Probably rank decay. It happens if you don’t play often enough.
People think decay only happens to those over Diamond 5.
But I think it also happens to lower ranks if they skip multiple seasons. I know I read a post which said a former master dropped to a very low rank like bronze or silver after logging in for the first time in years.
So it’s not like you can just keep a high rank forever if you got it in 2017 or something.
