Anyone miss when QM required a tank and healer?

I miss the times, or that brief period last year, when QM enforced Tank + Healer + R. Assassin. It’s true that QM was not quick anymore, but I was fine with it.

Some of my friends weren’t, and welcomed the decision to revert it.

There’s no solution for it, except to give player (or party leader) a choice whether he’s willing to wait for balanced comp or if he prefer fast matchmaking.

Community will always be split, and very vocal about it, since it’s the most popular game mode by far.

As someone who played DotA in WC3 from 2007-2014/2015 (barely played in 2015, not sure if i could it)…

The queue times are a fraction of WC3 overall.
And the balance is liek a bazillion percent better.

So I was fine with it requiring these.

I think what could be changed to make it “better” in the current system is that:
please note I am using the new roles when i discuss things, likn to image:

  1. both teams need a healer; or one team needs two supports against one healer.
  2. Both teams need a tank; or both teams need a bruiser tanks are not bruisers

My number one might be a bit contested (given that TLV is considered a support) but I Think overall these two more “broadened rules” would up game quality in QM over current QM rules, while barely increasing queue times.

But, last time i recall asking about what “expanding queue things” I Was told:

  1. my idea that the queue variables continually expand as time passes is correct. (i.e. “expanded search” at 35 seconds is different then at 200 seconds).
  2. revealing the change will change how players act, and is currently decide that keeping it hidden is good.

Play draft then.

Or just git gud and don’t relay on healer & tank.

It’s quick match, not fair match. You can not expect a balanced match.

Some heroes are bad in draft but OP if uncountered. What can you do against a butcher/illidan/2blade varian etc. in quick match? Nothing, they just steamroll you, no practice, no fun. This happens all the time when I play QM. I try avoid QM for this reason.

I am not sure what kind of practice are you looking for, there are 9 more people that play with you that should somehow let you “practice” the only hero you want? How is that fair to them?

Your best shot is to find 4 firends to team up with you and help you “practice”.

Hoping that the ready button somehow does the miracle of pulling a balanced team around your desired hero and an opponent team without any of the above QM troll heros is absurd. Can’t you see that?

On the other hand there are also heroes that work much better in matches without tanks/healers and they would become worse in QM if there has to be one tank and one support in each match.
There are ways to play with tank and supports anyway (playing with a premade group or draft) so no need to force this meta into QM.

If I really want a QM game with a tank, I queue in QM as a tank… When comps were forced, I pretty much had to do that to find a game at all and it still took a solid 5+ minutes to find a game. Now it’s fast and I at least have the option to play something else. I don’t see the drawback here…

you are missing the point, you have to play completely different, choose different talents then you would see in hl/tl

I’d love to have the enforced roles per team back. It was only marginally slower to get into a match, and the games were significantly more enjoyable for not feeling like a diceroll on who had the better burst/stomp comp of assassains.

I honestly never experienced these 10+ minute queue times that some complained about. Yes, we didn’t have instant to 30 second queues, but a couple minutes is a fair exchange for a more enjoyable match by far compared to what we sometimes have now.

Not at all. I’m glad that blizzard removed it, so that we can have our quick queues and whacky comps back. UD and Ranked are right there, if you want balanced teams.

Unranked and ranked play are not solutions to wanting to play a specific hero. If you hold fast to a hero that doesn’t work with, or fill the necessary role for a team in those play modes, then you get labeled a troll/feeder/griefer.

standard reply fixes nothing

I had a match this weekend where it was abathur + illidan + butcher vs no tanks or even bruisers. Take a wild guess how that clown fiesta went. These sorts of matches are more common than you’d think and are some of the least fun ways to play the game if you’re not on the obviously going to win side.

Nope, if I wanted to play the actual game, and not do some clown fiesta :potato: action game, I would do RANKED or Unranked.

Because then you can actually draft which is part of the real game, instead of potato action QM.

sounds like you need to gain knowledge of more than 1 hero and be less of a 1 trick.

+10 for missing the point entirely. When I play ranked or unranked modes, I’m very often the last to pick so that I can fill whatever is necessary and because I have the widest roster of comfortable characters out of my friends. This is not the issue that I presented at all. Sometimes I just really want to play Azmodan, or Xul, or Lunara, or whoever, which is entirely normal. But not having even the most basic comp makes for much less enjoyable play, and frankly not even normal play due to the slaughterfest 5v5 assassains can be.

The problem is that a not insignificant amount of characters are balanced around:

  • Having a healer to keep them alive
  • Having a tank to help lock down targets
  • Having a tank to peel for them
  • Having a tank to initiate for them
  • The enemy team having a healer to make their poke damage incidental instead of overwhelming
  • The enemy team having a tank so their initiation isn’t unstoppable
  • And many other push/pull, pro/con, give/take points

And that’s not even talking about matchups like 5 Ranged Assassins vs 5 Melee Assassins or Extreme Waveclear vs No Waveclear. There’s a lot that can go into influencing a game’s outcome, and there are definitely unwinnable compositions sometimes.

Thats because a broken record is simply that… broken.

Stupid comment.

With low mobility backline heroes that require a tank for peel against dive, there is no ‘git gud’. Many heroes (mostly healers) are designed to perform the best when they are in an organized environment. If you would rather wait 30 seconds to get into a game and have you [expletive] handed to you instead of waiting 2-3 minutes for a balanced game then good for you, buddy.

Play draft then. It’s the only solution to your “problem”. LOL

So rather than queing for an unorganized environment… queue for an organized one. duh.
