Was Carnivorous Cube: Good or Bad Design?

Because design and game balancing aren’t as much connected as people think.

It’s really easy to have a really fun game that isn’t really well balanced. I sure many people here can suggest some.

Day 1 DH is easy both well designed and overpowered.

With that said. I not against balancing the game. I against people trying to solve issues they have with design with balance decisions.

This is the only game were i see people suggest that devs should hide what they consider as mistakes by nerfing they so much that no one gonna want to play with it for example.

I think Cube design wise if strong yet kind of fair. Problem was it was very abusable with charge minions. If anything with charge sticks next turn you were likely dead next turn against cube decks. Sac pact, dark pact and hunters one mana trigger death rattles in no longer around so if cube came back now it would be very fair. Its not as easy to trigger on the turn its played anymore.

It was bad design it allowed such utter bullcrap and still does in wild.

There is a reason cubelock has been toptier so long in wild

[Carnivorous Cube] was in many decks:


  • Cube Warlock: cubed [Plated Beetle], [Mountain Giant], [Doomguard], [Voidlord].

  • Control Warrior: cubed [Direhorn Hatchling].

  • Devilsaur/Hadranox Druid: cubed [Charged Devilsaur] and [Hadranox].

  • Deathrattle Rogue: cubed [Mechanical Whelps].

  • Deathrattle Hunter: cubed [Devilsaur Egg] and [Witchwood Grizzly].

  • Any decks I missed?


As far as playing against [Carnivorous Cube], I liked playing against the Druids and Warriors the most. Warriors didn’t have easy ways to pop their own cubes and Druids would have to sacrifice a semi-precious [Naturalize].

I like when [Carnivorous Cube] is a slow card that slows the game down by making [Really Sticky Boards + Value] rather than being used by people to try to exploit it as a Battlecry instead of Deathrattle.

The games are pretty fun and Very Minion Based when the opponent is also playing with [Faceless Manipulator] and well-costed-Silence like [Ironbeak Owl].
