Yeah well, I know what to tell you man :-/
Hearthstone is sadly VERY beginner unfriendly by default. Instead of handing out the free packs from all active expansions overall, you only get free packs/legendaries 2-3 months after the latest expansion was released. I wish they’d change that.

It’s kind of interesting, because the conclusion of most of these discussions is that paying a little bit really doesn’t get you much.
You get about a hundred packs per expansion from just re-rolling and completing your dailies, so free players are fine and there aren’t that many cards to get in a set so whales are hardly milked dry, but spending something like $50 a year really isn’t going to get you much content.
There are a few great deals, like the beginner bundle and the wild expansions, but if you want to buy into individual sets, you might as well do it free to play unless you’re ready to become a whale.

We need a two tiered matchmaking system. One for people who pay, one for people who play for free.

@OP - I understand your frustration and I am so sorry that you are seeing netdecks at the newbie ranks. That is just pathetic and sad, but I digress. If you are struggling with quests, it is quite possible for me to befriend you and I can concede so you can get your wins.
Also, I love all things all Hunter. I just earned my golden hunter portrait a few months ago and already am at 600 wins. Right now, I’m working on Even Shaman. All of my decks are Wild but I wouldn’t mind putting together some standard decks to help you.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me and if I don’t know the answer, we’ll learn together!

Maybe for casual I wouldn’t care but for ranked… Ranked is ranked and it should be blind about everything except your position on the ladder.

Casual is locked bellow rank 25. you can only play ranked or solo content. Blizzard should allow new players in the caual que where they ther opponents are given by mmr instead of rank.
Really?! Wow, I didn’t realize this. So someone can “buy” a deck and start at rank 50 or whatever and just decimate everyone…I agree then, i think casual could greatly improve a new player experience because then they would get an mmr and be matched accordingly
just don’t play. seriously. waste of time, and hearthstone is just an RNG slot machine.
I’m also a F2P player. Rise of Shadows was my first expansion after two months playing the game. I opened more than 60 RoS packs, and almost got the entire collection, only a legendary and couple of epic left. I Also got like 15 Boomsday packs, 10 Raskathan, and like 20 classics. All this was opening a package a day with the quests and gold winnings.
Since i got most of the card i wanted with about 2 weeks left for the new expansion, my recommendation would be to spend 2 to 4 months collecting gold and buying about 50 packages on day 1 of the new expansion.
Another way would be only buying classic the first months.
It’s hard, you have to be patient.
I built decks with Hunter and Priest, which are cheaper to begin, also got a druid from the packs. Crafted a lot of rare cards, but i think would be better to craft epics which are harder to get, disenchanted all golds i got.
Ranked 6 have been my top just a star away from ranked 5. I got a tier 1 mech hunter with all the bell and whistles, so it’s not a pay to win game. I’ve should been legend

i think too many people are either new to CCGs or have unrealistic expectations
like reaching legend on the first week
Instead of helping the original poster let’s get into a detailed discussion about the terminology P2W. Because that is more constructive, helpful and fun.
Hearthstone is not P2W strictly speaking. Instead it results in a more than miserable player experience for new and casual players who do not invest a lot of money. The latter is much better
It is also not possible to make the game better in that regard because Blizzard developers don’t have much free time and reasons because it is so.
Note the wording of my quote and that I never said it wasn’t “p2w” in any capacity, only that it doesn’t fit the typical definition of “p2w”. People commonly associate this phrase with things like EA or more recent installments of Battlefront, where you NEED to spend money in order to receive specific content or where paying gives you a direct and explicit bonus over people who don’t. The goal of my post was to better clarify this and make sure that newer players weren’t confused. At the end of the day, paying money in Hearthstone gives you little to no advantage compared to the stereotypical “p2w” games (the one time where you can argue against this is in a player’s first few weeks, where they have little to no collection whatsoever). Once you have your first consistent and competitive deck, you can typically reach legend and “w” without having “2” “p” anything.
Similarly, while this game and the content inside of it isn’t COMPLETELY f2p (as compared to things like Fortnite), it’s important to point out that this isn’t remotely a bad thing, especially considering that any and every successful CCG has never run on the model that people here suggest (that is, access to every card either for free or for a small flat rate). You’re given access to the ability to craft every card for free. There is no functional difference between a Mech Hunter deck crafted using a pre-order bundle and the same deck crafted by an f2p account. What you AREN’T given access to (and what spending money grants you) is the ability to craft a larger range of decks. This game isn’t so much “p2w”" or “f2p” as it is something in-between: “pay-to-have-variety”.
Moreover, while the “dream” of collecting every card in Hearthstone is nigh-unobtainable on a free budget, it’s also a goal that VERY much isn’t needed to win the game (most cards are filler and never see play) and as a result has no part in a conversation talking about the degree to which the game is “p2w”.

I hear you. Even as somebody who’s played since Karazhan, this game is expensive. Just because I buy the preorders doesn’t mean much, I’m still crunched for dust and until recently had to regularly nuke my collection for good decks.
I wish new players would have a reason to get in and to keep playing.

Yeah, they need to keep the promo stuff in, or at least have them available at a later date, like through an achievement system!
See the Frozen Throne Adventure, the only way “promo” cards are still available: 1 free Death Knight and 3 Frozen Throne Packs.
Where’s the free C’thun and Marin? How the fk are players going to catch up on Archmage Vargoth and SN1P-SN4P after July?
Generally agree, you get Marin and C’thun though when you buy your first Kobold’s or Old Gods pack
You do, but that requires spending money on the Battle net store not everyone knows about.
The f2p thing gets ya. Find a cheaper hobby.
