New Arena is dead for f2p players and it's alarming

I’m seriously pissed off and I’ll cry about it. But let’s try to see things with a cool head - I’ll even provide the suggestion in the end, so feel free to skip the rant.

I’m a casual f2p player (donate is not even available in my region, lol). Which means - I don’t have time, not do I have willingness to grind for gold 24/7. And I’m not the only one.

What did we have?

150 gold - the standard arena run until 12 wins or 3 loses. Yeah, I’m not a great Arena player, yet I still like drafting the deck and solving challenges that this format provided. In fact, it was my favourite game-mode.

Getting 150 gold - is relatively easy for a casual player. I could afford like 300-ish gold per week, which means 2-3, sometimes even 4 arena runs per week, if I get few good runs. But even with the average 4-5 wins I could enjoy the mode consistently - and these 0 wins runs were balanced by the occasional 9-10-11 wins runs. Bad weeks were balanced by good weeks. And so on. And even bad runs could get you some “cash-back”, which is a deal-breaker.

Important notice: many 5+ wins runs started with like 1-2, 2-2. The fact that run ends at 3 losses was a big deal, since it was optimal for balancing bad luck/bad plays/getting used to the deck.

What do we have now?

The Novice Arena:

Oh well. 150 gold - up to 2 loses and 5 wins.

  • More stressful, no time to adapt;
  • More dependent on luck;
  • You draft a poor deck - you get gut punched by 0 rewards;
  • You draft a good deck - you don’t get to savor it enough;
  • Finish ANYTHING less, than a 5-win run - you are not compensated at all;

Underwhelming, isn’t it? Well, there is this 300 G new format Arena. Maybe it is more exciting?

The Underground Arena:

No. Get middle-fingered in every orifice you prefer to keep uninvaded.

300 gold for 12 win - 3 loss runs. Twice as much.

  • Every opponent seems to have a better deck than you do. Which is most likely the skill issue. But you can’t even practice or do anything about it.
  • Get 0-3’d, 1-3’d, 2-3’d all the time - and get like…3 packs on average? That’s it?
    – Oh, nevermind. There is a GENEROUS cashback staring from 2 wins that is twice as less impactful as before.
  • You HAVE to play 5+ wins runs to get at least the 75G equivalent of the old format arena. Nuff said.
  • So…you grind for a whole week to get a SINGLE arena run, which often gives no satisfaction, no joy and no rewards, as opposed to 2-4 runs per week before.

And even if I wanted to pay for the gold - even if the shop wasn’t banned in my region - I’d spend 900 G for like…6 packs and bunch of negative emotions? Wow. Just wow.

So, despite me liking the new format gameplay-wise, the economics aspect of this format is abysmal for f2p players. The underground Arena is a whale farm now. Thank you for the update.

As for the suggestion:

Just…give 2 Arena tickets for 0-3 runs, if the player didn’t concede in his 0-2 game. No packs needed. No dust needed. Nothing else. Just 2 tickets.

Please, Blizzard, let me play my favourite game mode. Let me learn the meta, let me get better, let me make mistakes and correct them as the f2p player. Even cheap gacha-games let players, well…play, until the hit the grind wall. You just obliterate f2p player’s face with this wall right at the gates.

Respectfully, f2p casual player with a banned shop, who just wants to have the deceptively simple, insanely fun experience.

Peace and stay hydrated.

They are adding gold in the next update. I wouldn’t expect a huge amount though.

Here’s what they posted.

We’ve been listening closely to your feedback on the new Arena experience. Our team is actively working on updates to better align with how you love to play—and yes, that includes changes to gold rewards.

It’s been a few days since our big Arena update, and we have been closely monitoring your feedback since then. We’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm for this mode, but also a number of improvement requests.
Our teams are actively working on a few quality of life updates to better align with how you love to play the mode, and this includes changes to the reward system. We want this mode to feel more rewarding and exciting to play, and we’ll share more details with you in an upcoming update.

The bot farming is going to go crazy. No one will ever need any more gold to play arena.

I suspect they will just take away the tickets you get as reward and give gold instead. People don’t register that ticket=150 gold toward your next Arena and problably chop out pack reward and replace with 25-50 gold bag so you get less than a pack worth of value but you get it in gold so you can goblin hoard for it. Don’t worry though whatever they do your Arena will still be shrinkflated.

The big issue is that for many arena grinders the packs were 100% useless. So, you could go 12 wins and the reality was your reward was 2 tickets. Pretty god awful.

I believe the update was made to remove arena grinders, actually. The format was not friendly to new players and has a really steep learning curve. The changes seemed aimed at correcting those issues more than rewarding long time enjoyers of the mode.

Bot farming for 0-3s? It doesn’t seem like an issue, considering there is a rating system and no rewards, other than the “refund” of 2 tickets. Want to spend them to get another 0-3? Be my guest.

If anything, it will allow bots to be stuck at the bottom of the bracket, while gaining absolutely nothing, in a perpetual samsara.

Meanwhile, f2p and novice players won’t feel “scammed” after losing 0-3, and adding the “Don’t concede at 0-2” condition removes the “Win by conceding” situation. So…I don’t really see an issue here, other than Blizzard potentially getting slightly less money.

The bots still farm the rewards track. They will probably near rope every turn to milk the timer. I am assuming the arena point rewards accumulate at the same rate as ladder.

Its dissapointing the new ui and format look cool to me, but i refuse to burn through gold for the absurd barrier to entry. Not sure adding a bit of gold will even make it better.

If you cant go infinite with the next update, I will just continue to not play it even if I am interested in the new format

Oh, yeah. Regarding the UI/UX.

Would be cool if you let players just skip the card in the additional selection of the Underground Arena.

It’s a bit too much of a hassle picking a card from 3 useless options, then looking for it in the deck-list, and removing it manually. Thanks.

The truth is f2p as a whole is actually dying out and becoming essentially gotcha games. You can call all these games free to play but a lot are just slowly morphing into predatory nightmares.

Many F2P game’s actually have the greediest monetization with gatcha models, but I truly believe that some F2P games would have much more success by focusing on providing the best play experience.

I think if Hearthstone would had been developed better, it would have been making close to a billion dollars a year by year 5. I could provide details as how or why this may have been possible, but I won’t, because it was not done, and the window of opportunity to realize that kind of success closed long ago.

The best F2P game is probably PUBG.

I recently tried Diablo Immortal over the last week as I am trying other games, while waiting to see if they fix the economy for Arena, and DI is extremely greedy, which might be fine, if the game did not also suffer from other typical Blizzard development issues. I installed and uninstalled the game three times as I waffled over whether or not DI was worth investing time into—it’s not.

F2P players who like word games can’t go wrong with Wordfued for a positive, casual gaming experience.

I just downloaded MTG Arena, but I only just started the color challenges.

I am looking at games like Raid: Shadow Legends and Honkai Star Roll as F2P games to try next.

Every single F2P game have pay to win elements, more or less but it’s.
You can see the 2 games you mentioned have p2w elements, less than DI but more than hearthstone.
The problem with the new arena reward system is that it somehow becomes pay to play (which is fine with me), but the price is not worth it. 400 runestones ~$4 for a single entry is too much.
Personally if talking about pay to play, I prefer to pay for offline games, like xcom series, persona 5 royal, wasteland, etc. or subscription online games like wow (but quit because it was too time consuming), instead of paying for every entry.
I’d be totally fine if they make arena subscription $12 a month for one free underground entry/day, just to have a fun time playing.
