I think it depends on your perspective. As an Alliance sided player back then I don’t see her as a bad character, just tough decisions sometimes. But from the Horde side I’d definitely call her the way you did.

First depends on which character portrait looks more pleasing to the eye. If my hero portraits happen to be all the same character, then i go for which version is either the coolest or most fitting for my most active deck(s) for that class.

I have to admit, I bought the new Snake and Crane on top of the Devil in Pandaria bundle. This new Jainna skin is a work of art.
Usually based on emotes.
Maiev is an autolock because WC3 though lol
I think you’re the first person aside from me that actually cares about emotes! 
It’s why, although boring, I sometimes like Initiate Kurtrus because he isn’t threatening nor condescending in his emotes.

If completing a Dungeon Run rewarded a portrait, I’d definitely use the Rogue one. Took me 111 bosses defeated.

It varies. I definitely tend to pick female avatars, but sometimes I’ll run the new shiny that I just picked up, or cycle out to match a particular seasonal event. Otherwise, I just pick the one that I think looks the coolest, and that can vary from week to week. I don’t pay as much attention to the emotes or voice lines, but I like that there’s a lot of difference.
However, I never play Sir Annoy-o. His voice lines are incredibly irritating to me, and if my opponent is using it, I’ll have less patience for the match than I normally would, because squelching the opponent doesn’t shut up the idle voicelines.
Personally, I choose them based on which I like or have recently acquired, and will often also choose them based on a theme; for example, Ragnaros for elemental Shaman. Bonus if it has any green - since that’s my favourite and is the colour of my birthstone - or blue (which is a close second for me)! Some of my favourites include (not a complete list by any means, but just a few of my favourites): Emerald Malfurion due to the green and my birthstone; Medivh because I bought the Warcraft 3D movie and it was one of the bonuses included; Ragnaros since I think the elemental theme with him is pretty awesome; and, finally Chef Scabbs because I’m a culinary enthusiast.
Can’t beat original golden Anduin.
I like everything basic. Basic heroes, basic card back. I even wish the 500 ones did not automatically replace the 0 ones
