Well, love, for example, isn’t rational; however, if you date someone you love — that’s understandable, but if you don’t love that person, yet date him or her anyway, then the question is: why? 
Love is a survival mechanism. It may not seem rational, but it’s necessary. Albeit, yes, we make poor choices all of the time in romance.
Nope, not really, if you mean the survival of a population.
