The issue here is that gamers are extremely sensitive to incentive systems.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
— Frank Herbert, Dune
The biggest manipulation tactic Blizzard uses is FOMO. Fear of missing out. And it is the mind-killer. For many players, if they let it pass through them, there would be no “I” that remains; their entire identity is in checking off the glorified to-do lists that are quests and achievements.
F2P players want card packs. Quests give XP, XP gives packs, and quests ask players to play Ranked. Ranked gives card packs at end of month for reaching certain ranks. For a lot of players, this is all they want. They don’t play for the joy of playing, they play to accomplish these objectives.
Of course, this is pathetic. Playing a game that you don’t find fun to check off objectives given to you by a corporation is work. For no money. But many people are so desperate for any form of validation that they’ll jump on the opportunity, especially if it doesn’t have any risk of the social humiliations of rejection.
But I say all of the above to make this point: these players might not be forced to play Ranked, but they feel forced to play Ranked. And that feeling, sadly, is their reality.
And sensitive to them because facing the reality of their own life might be too daunting.
So, seeking validation through pixel achievements becomes a way to cope with feelings of inadequacy. But in the end, it’s important to recognize that these accomplishments don’t build anything meaningful.
I believe the best approach to gaming is: finish your real work first, broadly defined as any personal or professional responsibilities you deem important. Then, see if you still have the desire to sit down and enjoy the game on your own terms. Worst thing to do is open your eye in the morning and immediately sit down at the computer and play.
Don’t worry everyone! the next patch has dropped! The OTK decks are…mostly untouched…wow, good job blizz, nerfed the crap out of WARRIOR (the reactive part of the meta) without fixing the ACTUAL PROBLEM. What a joke. Oh, sorry, the OTK decks are now SLIGHTLY inconvenienced, what a huge change! Aggro, what aggro? Guess aggro is fine too, lol.
