XAN Rune does NOT activate correctly

Issue:
XAN rune does not reliably activate and provide the guaranteed Overpower & Critical strike.

Context:
Necromancer Using YUL rune to fuel offerings to activate XAN rune for Overpower Critical hits to Soulrift while wearing Unmaker Helm.

What should happen:
With YulXan equipped, I use Bone spirit to provide 50 offerings 16 times to fully charge (800) Xan rune, then activate Soulrift. Subsequent shadow damage dealt from wearing Unmaker while using Bone Spirit is Overpowered and Critical hits for duration of Soulrift.

What actually happens:
As described above, BUT when Soulrift is activated on a fully charged Xan rune all subsequent shadow damage dealt via Bone Spirit/Unmaker is unmodified by overpower. It is critical hit damage, but character has high Crit Hit chance so it maybe from that source and not the rune.

Additional details:
(1) This rune combination and gear setup WAS working correctly and reliably using only Bone Spirit as the offering generator every time prior to this. No changes that I am aware of were made to character prior to the rune not working correctly. The shift from rune working to not working happened while logged in and playing the game. Note: results are the same whether I am activating a Xan charged Soulrift while a soulrift is currently active or not.

(2) After many, many, many attempts in the dummy training room using every recombination of gear, runes, aspects, activation timing and even active follower, I found a way to make it work. With Yul rune giving 50 offerings per use of a skill with cooldown, charge the Xan rune 15 times with Bone Spirit (my builds damage initiator) and then use Corpse Tendrils (has cooldown) for the 16th skill and final 50 offering. Initiating Soulrift at this point activates the Xan rune correctly and all shadow damage dealt for duration of Soulrift is now Overpowered and Critical hits per description.

Conclusion:
While the work around of using a separate skill to correctly activate Xan rune does work 100% of the time now, I don’t believe this is how it was intended. Especially since previous to this, it was working off using Bone Spirit for all charges and only stopped working that way for no apparent (to me at least) reason.

Edit: Clarify wording.

Edit: P.S. Recommend rune charge indicator on buff bar change color to indicate fully charged and ready to proc on next offering. This would be extremely helpful when trying to time casting a specific skill/action with the proc availability in the heat of battle, especially if offerings are relatively small.

Having the same issue here, Xbox Series X.

I’ve gotten Soulrift to reliably proc (use up the Xan buff) from the Unmaker’s pulse by specifically:

  1. Gaining offering until Xan buff is activated.
  2. Activate Soulrift (which doesn’t use the Xan buff/bugged).
  3. Cast Decrepify (which can’t Overpower and eat the buff) to use Essence.
  4. Once 30 Essence is gained back, Unmaker/Soulrift pulses and immediately uses Xan buff.
  5. All Unmaker/Soulrift pulses become guaranteed Crit/Overpower for remainder of Soulrift duration (correctly snapshotting the buff mid-Soulrift).

So it seems the Unmaker pulse can trigger it correctly. Hoping this gets fixed soon, I had finally gotten my Xan rune!

Edit: Tested again and this is only the case when the Xan buff is gained when Soulrift is NOT ACTIVE. If the Xan buff is gained during a Soulrift’s duration, I wasn’t able to get a second cast of Soulrift to use the Xan buff at all. In fact, gaining the Xan buff and having Soulrift finish its cooldown before it finished its duration actually resulted in the Xan buff just disappearing when Soulrift’s duration ended:

  1. Gain Xan buff.
  2. Cast Soulrift.
  3. Cast Decrepify to trigger Unmaker pulse, Xan buff is used and snapshotted, subsequent pulses Crit & Overpower.
  4. Use Yir rune (cast same skill 3 times) + Iron Maiden to spam offering, gain Xan buff again (Soulrift is still running).
  5. Soulrift’s cooldown ends, don’t use any skills at all, Xan buff still on buff bar (Soulrift is still running).
  6. The original Soulrift’s duration ends, Xan buff immediately disappears (no skills have been cast to use it)

Interesting to know it’s not an isolated issue. Getting the Xan rune was the last piece to finally drop for me as well.

I can have a semblance of normalcy with the workaround I’m using, it’s only one other skill use after all, but I’m sure this is not how it was meant and getting this build to run smoothly is hard enough without unintended kinks in the process.

My concern too is that I haven’t seen any other discussion on it in my google research and was worried that either this is a one off and I either live with it or scrap it and go with a different build. Sucks to hear you’re also having issues, but I ‘d be lying if I wasn’t relieved to know it isn’t just my setup. I’m gonna play around with it again and see if I can recreate your process, I might get some new insight into it.

One more thing to note: The Blood Boiling legendary aspect (Every 20 seconds your next skill cast is a guaranteed Overpower) works exactly as we’d expect, Soulrift eats the buff immediately on cast and all Unmaker pulses are Overpowers for its duration.

So the precedent is there for the Xan rune mechanic to work with Soulrift/Unmaker as we expected it to, definitely seems like a bug.

Aha… Xan rune is mostly bugged in general. Eg. It doesn’t work with many skills eg. Golem activation or curses. Eg. Iron Maiden DoT dmg (every 2 sec.) doesn’t trigger but direct dmg (when a monster attack you) does (and cancel the opportunity to use it for a useful skill). It is totally inconsistent, unclear, unintended etc. like everything in this game…
