I want to play a WW build in S4. Is this still possible? Maxroll does no even mention a true WW build. Tier F-? I do not want to play DD----just WW. What am I missing?
This is because the pure WW damage is currently absolutely too weak. The WW-Skill itself is currently only used as a support skill. It is hoped that Blizzard will soon increase this damage.
It is weak because it is a channeling skill which you cant overpower. Ironically now it is mainly used to proc earthstriker overpower charge for other skill like HOTA because WW itself can’t overpower
That still does not fix Whirlwind. It is a Channeled effect and not a Burst Damage ability similar to Bleed. The difference is that Bleed (Rend) you can still do other stuff while the damage over time effect is going.
The best change to Whirlwind would be to allow Defensive Skills, CoTA, WoTB, and Weapon Mastery Skills to be used While Channeling. A lot of Whirlwind support is centered around the Skill ramping up in Damage the longer you Channel. The problem here however is that all of your support buffs end up falling off and your Defensive capabilities plummet as you Channel.
By implementing the change above, you turn Whirlwind into a far more complex Skill rather than spin-to-win while still retaining it being the highlighted Skill. Alternatively, its effectiveness as a Utility Skill also goes up dramatically for builds that focus on Weapon Mastery Skills as their Primary source of Damage (namely Deathblow). It adds more synergy even when using it in conjunction with other Core Skills.
Rend + WW (Bleed) and Rupture would be a great combination. Using Ground Stomp, Skullbreaker, Anemia with 2x 1H Maces or Concussion with a 2H Mace would be viable.
If there’s no whirlwind build guide. It’s time for someone to make one. Whose up for the task??

Still needs to be tweaked I am sure but first pass at a Non-Dust Devil Whirlwind Build with and without Uber Uniques. Ring of Starless Skies and Shako are great. You can save a ton of points and change build if you do not use Ramas and Seligs. You can probably build a better Legendary Amulet now than Seligs for Max Fury but 60 Fury is a lot.
You can drop the Basic later and take something like Ground Stomp to reduce WoTB even more. Pretty sure you can get it to nearly 100% uptime in which case you can take that beefy +100% additive damage in addition to DwB.
The reason Might is on an Amulet is to get you that 9 second window of application. Lunge works well to generate Fury, mobility, ramp up WoTB. If you use 2H Mace with Concussion Tempering instead if DW Ramas on WW, you can perma stun things.
WW is dead mate, the current D4 dev team has no idea what to do with it so they’re just ignoring it and hoping everyone moves on from it and forgets it exists. A truly sad state of affairs for such an iconic skill, but it is what it is.

That’s exactly the big problem. The Barbarian is balanced after him, that’s the biggest mistake and fun-killer. Without him, the game would be 100 times better.
you can run WW just fine but you wont be able to push past like lvl 40 ish in the pit you need to rework the build to make it end game. I have run a WW build since lvl 1 and its fine for just about all the content in the game.
The only ww build you can do is double swing. Its still a really fun build and youre somewhat tanky.
Triple shout whirlwind build won’t cut it. Not enough damage output plus attack speed doesn’t do much for whirlwind. Got to supplement WW damage with other sources.
its does just fine with 98% of the game though so saying we cant play WW is just dumb
Yeah that’s true. It’s functional. No hindrances. just lacking in the damage department. Which can be adjusted. WW won’t outperform Bash cleave anytime soon. But I think people just want their own personal build to be top which is silly to me.

Tried pure WW build. Didn’t like it. Double swing withh DD iis awesome.
I’m working on something with Whirlwind and Tyrael’s. Seems Tyrael’s damage effect scales and can crit + overpower off of Whirlwind because it’s considered a projectile. Currently at tier 75 pit. I need to farm replacement Ubers so I can Masterwork them and see how much farther that can push me. I’ve also just added Ramanaldi’s back into my build and have yet to test in the pit, yet.
Do Dust Devils benefit from Ramanaldi’s? Looking at maxroll they suggest it but don’t metion why. I know it boosts WW itself obviously but the dust devils are not a “skill” so seems odd to me.
I’ve been running a WW build similar to something I ran back in S2 and it’s good enough for Nightmares up to ~70 but not much else. My understanding is that Dust Devils outscale WW now so I’m working to shift to this:

No actual idea if it will in fact make a difference but feelcrafting I don’t see why it wouldnt work if stuff like the Double swing dust devil build works.
Dust Devil doesn’t benefit from Magnus Opus. Aspect spell doesn’t interact with a lot of character stats sheets.
WW are currently nerfed in the ground and is not endgame usable. jsut hope that blizzard will give some love on WW builds.
