I think pet system could be expanded to give them all abilities too and have them as uber drops and questline rewards and such. As long as every pet is earnable in game then they could sell chase ones in shop that are cosmetically different.
5 examples.
_ Earnable in game pets _
Baby Treasure Goblin - Treasure goblins sometimes show up in pairs.
Earn by defeating 50 goblins.
Hellhound - 10% increased cinder droprate
Earn by spending 15000 cinders.
Mimic Chest - Will very rarely spew out an extra item / mats when you open a chest.
Earn by opening 100 chests.
Mini Ghost - Bright Blue. Will
Earn by killing 1000 undead.
Spectral Bishop - Shrines last 25% longer.
Earn by using 50 shrines.
_ Shop Purchase Pets_ (cosmetic changes compared to earnable version)
Baby Gold Treasure Goblin
Lavahound - deeper redder and flamier version of hellhound
Drooling Mimic Chest - poison drips from mouth
Mini White Ghost - very bright white
Ghostly Bishop - very bright blue
I equipped the free dog on each of my characters… and I forget it’s there most of the time. It blends in with the rest of the stuff on screen, quietly runs around grabbing stuff for me so I don’t have to run in circles for cinders, gold, etc. It’s an overall QoL boost…
So of course people are gonna complain about it.
I’m sorry if having a basic looking pet that you can turn off breaks your precious immersion into a world of monsters, demons, evil people, goblins, magic shrines, mana pools, cow levels, giant spell / ability effects, brightly colored armor sets, horses, trophies, etc, etc, etc… Nope, that one little brown smudge on the screen? Totally immersion breaking.

Nothing stopping that from happening in the future
Seeing as the pets are so bad and too slow for you, you could always turn them back off so you don’t have one
Now is it going to take 4 seasons and an xpac preorder to get any good pets or it going to be like the 1 model mounts. Where every mount is the exact same model with different colors.
Need a better video card!

Eh, I’d say a 6950XT on a custom loop is probably handling D4 fine, but thanks for the suggestion sweetie. Go rage at some digital animals some more. 
Far from raging lil lady… just silly to push cute pets in a hell riddled world. Blizz said D4 would be dark… puppies are not dark!

Besides, man there are so many more problems coming from mmo mindset, take a glance at the forums. This is not even a problem in this context.
