You make your first roll randomly. After that, a pop up menu appears that offers you three options:
reroll from scratch
reroll a new stat in same category
reroll same stat
Thought it might work. Still have limited times to roll but you can completely change the roll, roll for the stat your looking for in same category or reroll the same stat to try to get a higher output.
The devs have said they want tempering to have an end. You either get it or brick it. I feel this season was an improvement over last. More rolls with GAs and more recipes with only 3 options have helped so I think going forward they’re more likely to keep the changes in that direction. Slight improvements to your odds but the possibility of bricking an item is still there.
why does tempering need a change? its pretty op and easy as is. they have already stated one plan they may implement is reducing the number of things rolled per recipe to 3-4 instead of having 5 options. that makes tempering even easier. dont see it needing more change than that
Even with three possible affixes you can get the same one 5 times in a row, I’ve been rocking a frigging 862 helm because I’ve bricked every single 925 helm with CDR on it that I’ve found. Tempering as it is is absolute trash.
I think it should be like this, but with either a high cost in legendary mats for options 2 and 3 (similar to enchanting) or with dedicated mats that you spend for options 2 and 3 a la the glyphs in LE.
Yes. This is why I’m so happy that I never see any 2GA, 3GA or 4GA drops. I would throw the game out the window if I got one of those drops with good stats only to brick it hah hah
A game about loot… but once it drops you might as well just hit the salvage button and avoid the temper frustrations all together. Genius.
Also… our blacksmiths must have tempered billions of items in the game by now… I would think they would have learned how to be good at their jobs by now and stop failing so miserably all the time. Can someone hire some competent blacksmiths?
I’m guessing this one wouldn’t fit the “theme” of being locked into a category - i.e. of the Blacksmith’s first smash of the mallet having narrowed down the potential of the item.
Devil’s advocate… trying to weight it closer to the hell’s armpit that it is now, by leaving it very risky to reroll an existing stat: I’d nix #1 and #3 (leaving #2, which is what the system is right now) but with a ray of hope in the form of a placeholder:
Odds are, your “first” temper will yield a stat you could live with (nvm its value) in the first 1/2 of rolls, so when you start rolling for the 2nd temper, your odds of getting a 2nd temper you could live with diminish with each roll… so you’d be more willing to mark a semi-useful stat as a “placeholder”, leaving you something to fall back on in case the rest of the rolls are completely useless. You can still brick the item (by always landing on a completely useless stat), but your odds of getting [the desired stat OR a stat you could live with] are probably about twice as good as either separately. I get that this isn’t always true, and several categories only have 1 useful stat… but this could work in most categories.
Con: plenty of bricking still.
Pros: meaningful strategy & player agency. After a couple dozen times “rescuing” a temper slot from oblivion, the system should feel less like a punishment and more like a “normal” RNG system… which I suspect is what Blizz wants.
This is even assuming it’s not currently “bugged”, which I don’t put past this team.
