I got to play the beta on console and was pleasantly suprised. There are some issues here and there but overall i liked it. I even liked the MMO lite mechanics in the game to a degree. The biggest issue with it being included though is that the devs thought it would be smart to lock the game to being online only. ( this is not a good move). This is not an MMO this is not warcraft, this is not destiny this is An ARPG. One day when Destiny wants to shut its server down thats it you cannot play the game anymore but thats what you expect for playing that. This is Diablo, a series of games that have offline modes at least on console and can play them offline, which it should be. When i didnt have internet i could pull out my switch or xbox and play diablo 3 to my hearts content but i wont be able to do that with 4. I know some of people are either at peace with this or are defending them for this move, but when they want to shut the servers down someday you will not be allowed to play the game anymore and if you wanted to get your diablo fix you will have to go to previous entries and that sucks so bad. Nobody should be happy with that and im just wondering if they have a plan for when the game is older but people still want to play it?
One can only hope that in the case of them shutting down their servers, that they’d “turn on” an offline mode. My wife is not a gamer, but she took to D3 like fiend. Maxed out a hunter, and a few hundred paragon levels, so more than casual playing.
Agreed, this is the biggest issue with the game.
Live service wasn’t a healthy idea but it’s about $$$ so I doubt there will be any offline mode.
Offline players aren’t spending money on microtransactions, really the Diablo Immortal monetization could happen at any time without warning.
The game is whatever they want it to be, not what we want it to be.
To see how they provide the game service even years after the release, you just have to look at D3 on PC what’s already a server based only game or simply look at wow, online for almost two decades and still live even with a shrinking player base.
Don’t get me wrong, I can see why some people want an offline mode but to understand what this means you have to take a look into the D3 leaderboards on console, only modded gear and cheating coming from edited offline save files.
I think Blizzard should add a true offline mode for those who want that but never ever should they allow any offline created characters play online at any point. I for myself always played Diablo online since D2 and I love the fact that Blizzard now finally added server based characters to the console version.
This question is the same for all MMOs throughout the years.
The answer is simple. They decided to make this an MMO so yeah, it won’t last forever.
But maybe they decide to create offline version when game shuts down in 10+ years. Sometimes devs do that, but its rare.
This is my only concern
But it is an MMO…I know it’s hard for Diablo fans in denial but this is a live service Diablo MMO.
No it’s not. D4 has several MMO features added to it but that’s it.
Regards being concerned about no longer having access to online only games in the future because their game servers could shut down. That definitely could happen with D4 but it’s not likely to happen for a very long time if the game is successful. Sure at some point it’s going to happen but until then may your fire burn brightly in Sanctuary.
I get why people want an offline mode. I do too but I accept that its not going to have one. I seriously doubt the servers will be shut down for a very long time. Diablo 3 is almost 11 years old and its still running ya?
What part of Massive Multiplayer Online Game are you struggling with? Stop trying to compare this to other MMOs and think well it doesn’t do X so it can’t be… It’s live service, shared world, online, multiplayer - probably holiday events coming - new seasons could add on more raid like content, fetch quests, open world pvp zones. I’m sorry that your are in denial , and you can’t move past D2 but this is an MMO first and ARPG second. Nothing will change this. I am right. So I suggest the sooner you accept the future you will start enjoying the game more or walk away. That’s the hard facts.
Exactly. This might be the last Diablo technically. Live service it can be added upon till we have 12-15 classes , 20+ zones etc it can run for 14-20+ years like WoW
I do enjoy the game. I actually love the MMO elements added to it. In fact I’m a huge fan of real MMOs therefore I can tell you that imo D4 is no such thing as MMO. There is no official definition of what makes any online live service an MMO but if you look at games like FF14 or WOW, which are in fact MMOs, then you’ll see the difference.
" Is Diablo IV an MMO game?
Technically, Diablo IV is not an MMO though it shares some MMO-like features. The game is marketed as an action role-playing, hack and slash game, but players can team up with others in order to take down enemies and complete quests.
There are “instances” in the game, where players might not see others populate a region until after a certain quest requirement is filled, such as clearing a stronghold of enemies."
Unfortunately I can’t add the link on here, but that’s a pretty good article about the topic and very easy to find.
Edit: One thing, that makes an MMO an MMO for me, is that you are at some points forced to play with others, like groupfinding and stuff. D4 however you can completly play all by yourself.
I get your concern OP and, sure, eventually the game might stop existing; however, will you actually care when that happens?
D2 still has support and no rumor of shutdowns prior to D2R
D3 obviously still has support
StarCraft still has support
Blizzard has a pretty strong track record of not removing online portions from their games. It doesn’t mean it’ll never happen but if it does it might be so far down the road that 99.9% of us won’t care
Why would they shut the serverss down if there will be battle pass every season? Would mean less money lol
I prefer it that way. It’s easier to keep track of hackers and people abusing exploits.
