Why were Ancestral Legendary and Mythic items tagged Legacy on Eternal?

As a player of both Eternal and Seasonal realms, I would like to know the rationale behind the decision to destroy all the 2-4 GA Legendary items and the Mythic items on my Eternal builds. For example, probably the best item I have ever found in game was near the end of Season 4 when I found a 4 GA Fractured Winterglass. I did not have time to Masterwork it then and I figured I would do that on Eternal. Guess what? It is now a Legacy item and cannot be Masterworked. Same thing for my Shako, Starless Skies, Andariel helms and Spear of Lycander.

What is the reasoning behind giving the shaft to the Eternal realm players or those Seasonal players who like to experiment with builds on Eternal without having to constantly level up new ones?

The stat squish if fine but that could have been done without the Legacy tag which basically ruins all the gear that I spent the last year finding. Give me a reason not to feel miffed and cheated by this decision.

I now feel like I cannot trust Blizzard to maintain some continuity on Eternal and make the game playable in the long term. I am not happy starting over every couple months and doing the same old thing over and over just to enjoy the game. I will not be forced to play Seasonal content if there is nothing there to really draw me in. I do not enjoy that. Instead I will move on to other games where I can enjoy the time invested into playing and developing builds. I hope it does not come to that but I am on the verge right now.

An explanation would be appreciated.

I know the seasonal only players among you will respond with the usual rhetoric. This post is not for you. It is a pleas to the Developers of this game for some clarification and some assurance that this is not going to be a thing moving forward every few months. I played D2 For many years and still had some items from 1.08 that I was proud of and used on some of my builds. They did not become nearly useless scrap after D2 LOD came out. That is what I expect and want from D4 in the future.
