Why use a premium currency?

So I refuse to participate in a premium currency system.

IMO they are always predatory rather intended to be or not in that at their very best they serve only to obscure the real cost of a thing.

More often than not they are used to “little more” you into spending more than you wanted or should have.

So why Blizzard?
Why not let us purchase the season pass in our native currency or even in USD only from the Blizzard store as we would a sub or really anything else.

Why force us to purchase a premium currency to turn around and purchase in-game items?

I would happily monetize in D4
Was looking forward to whatever your version of Seasons where going to be and I assumed that was going to have additional monetization on it that ya I intended to buy into.

But I have never and will never purchase a premium currency. If there is no way to purchase the seasons pass with an upfront cash price, with a direct payment checkout with receipt then I just won’t be purchasing it which makes me feel like I will be missing a chunk of the game I wanted to play so may well not bother to play at all depending on what comes of Season passes.

I don’t care if I can be competitive or not for note.
I’m not a competitive type player, I am a collector type player, I want to collect up all the things … but I will not purchase a premium currency so if you put things behind the paid season pass then that part of the game is locked away from me.

because what will happen is something similar to this.

the pass will cost say, 10$

but the currency you need to buy the pass… will be 15$

so what do you do with the extra 5$?

you spend it on the fomo shop

can you say? cha-ching

The premium currency is only used for cosmetics. You cant buy power with it.

Yep I know
Part of why I refuse to participate in premium currency schemes at all.

Would like to hear Blizzards reasoning as to why its needed though
Why not let us purchase items directly as they have in the past with other games

In there words what makes premium currency better than a direct transaction

No different from buying the gold token in wow and selling it on ah.

So if I understand correclty, you rather they have an outright cash price on the shop. Like a costume $19.99 instead of a premium currency price? It makes no difference to me, you’ll be paying the same amount of money.

its actually worse, if they follow the premium currency formula then the pass will be $10, but the price for the currency will be $15 leaving you with $5 left over. But nothing will cost $5 it will all be $7 and you can’t buy $2 worth lol.

You can’t buy the Season pass without premium currency

I would like to buy into the advanced SP but I refuse to buy premium currency

so I can’t monetise at all and I would like to

Premium currency is only for cosmetics, if you dont care about them, you can ignore them completely.

Yes 100% you got it in 1

I am happy to pay $19.99 from my CC/Debit/PayPal/Soul

I refuse flat out to purchase $19.99 worth of premium currency to then buy whatever it was I wanted

Why?
I see premium currency as a predatory tool that I refuse to support in any manner. So I simply refuse to purchase premium currency at all. I am fine with others that want to do it. But I wont and since they do not allow a direct transaction to purchase the Seasons pass I simply can’t monetize in this game though I would like to

then you answered your own issue.

blizzard is using premium currency for predatory reasons, which you are against.

so what is the problem? who cares then?

I would like to earn them e.g. I do care about them I like to collect things in games

I am happy to pay for them as well

I refuse to purchase premium currency, they do not allow direct purchase thus I cannot monetize and cannot participate in this aspect of the game which for me is a meaningful part of the game.

you want to buy the cosmetics with real money.

but blizz wants you to use premium currency.

a lot of people, including you, understand these currencies are “predatory” i would just use the word scam to be more clear

so, dont buy it then? it sounds like you lack impulse control, you’re not in full control of your own vessel (body/mind), it sounds like blizz has more power over you.

get yourself together man, buy some real clothes, not digital clothes. move on

LOL
I never said I lacked impulse control rather the opposite I refuse to participate in premium currency because it is a scam that is control there mate.

I wanted to know what there reason was from them (Blizzard)

I doubt they feel its predatory, I assume they have some justification

By asking I hope to start a conversation that will either result in a direct purchase option or abate my concerns … which I highly doubt will happen but I will listen if they have reasons.

It’s called starting a conversation

I am saying I am happy to monetise
I enjoy the game, I enjoy the content
I see value in putting my money into it

I do however have a problem with predatory monetization tactics and refuse to participate in them at all. So I wont.

I started the conversation to get a thread going, to hear others opinions and in the slim but futile hope Bliz might see this and might offer a solution (direct purchase option for SP)

the reason: profit
the bigger reason: business inside a capitalist society/economy
ultra reason: the blind can’t see the truth, cannot see their own mortality, that this reality is nothing but a temporary ride, they are fixated on staying here and are attached to material / physical objects, they are suffering and lack awareness

hope i cleared it for you

Yep I caught your take and share it

This was all an opportunity for Blizzard to offer their side on the topic

And to see how many of my fellow Diablo gamers are also not keen on premium currency.

This is an edge case, though, where you are asking them to provide a whole different set of transactions to let you work around your principled stand.

Selling premium currency means that they can sell packages of currency that give players a discount per coin. It means that they can distribute rewards in the form of that currency without anyone thinking this is real money they can withdraw from the system.

Does it feel less real to spend platinum than to spend USD? Sure, but it also feels less real to spend USD already loaded in a digital wallet than to load more in. I don’t think the difference between the two is particularly predatory or helpful for getting people to spend more. If it was, casino chips and online casino bankrolls would be denominated in a fake currency.

If you can’t stand premium currency, then don’t support the in-game store at all.

I won’t be
That is what I said

I find premium currency to be a predatory practice, as are loot boxes and other forms of fear based and obscured values. Fair enough others don’t share that take.

I was simply starting a conversation to see who does/did
And to offer Blizzard a chance to chime in

They already have systems to handle direct transaction and WoW already uses direct transaction for its own shop, tokens, etc. So the excuse of “more work” smells of BS.

I expect they are thinking its an added benefit … okay I don’t really buy that either but lets act in good faith and assume that is true and legit. So why not offer it alongside direct purchase.

And again they already have direct purchase options in place for other games and other parts of this game … so why not the Season Pass?

I dont see the point in objecting to premium currencies. Its just an intermediate step. Needless QQ here.

Its a means to obscure value, to “just a bit more” you and to bate you into additional purchase.

You can search around in game design and monetization practices, it is a debatable topic but one many consider a predatory one
