I can’t be alone in being constantly frustrated every session by not being able to loot items because my character wants to cast the spell bound to the “interact” button instead.
Is my gameplay a-typical? Do people clear the whole screen of objects and mobs before looting?

I hate it too.
Can’t pick up an ancestral item if there is a gem next to it.

There’s an option to unbind the dual actions of the A button… who knew… oh right, anyone who looked in the games settings.
And have only 5 spells instead of 6? That doesn’t sound like a good deal.

Nobody’s complaining because there is no problem. People went to options and saw the option. Now it’s time for you to go to options and see the option.
You asked for a solution, there’s one built in. I don’t care if you like the options.
As looting already is more time consuming than killing monsters, I dont understand this question.
Are you cherry picking your kills in a game where every single non-elite mob can drop exactly the one item you dont need to re-enchant+re-roll and simply need to upgrade?
There’s an option, sure, but there is not really anything free to map it to that works well (at least for me). Funny how a game like Hogwarts Legacy can give you something like 16 spells via a few buttons and leave all the others free for other things but Diablo 4 doesn’t even have a simple shift key like Elden Ring does.

Yup, join the line of complaints, these things have all been brought up and their response is a pretty resounding $TFU and we don’t care.
You can literally map the pick-up function to another button and still use the skill on A. I use press right stick for this.
The issue with unbinding the action button is that the controller has a limited amount of buttons to reassign it to, and the other function becomes a null function. I have tried this many times. I play on the PS4, so the action button is default assigned to the X button. When I unbind it, the action button becomes X, but I lose the skill that is also assigned to X and it becomes null; there are no other buttons that I can assign because all of the other buttons are taken or locked down for specific functions.
What would be most helpful, and I have seen this in other games, is to have a list of two button choices to assign actions/skills to. For example, the X button could be assigned to a skill and x + down directional button could be used to pick up items.

What would be most helpful is the combination of creating an item filter to preselect which items you want to pickup, autopickup, and having a larger inventory: there are dungeons where I dont finish with a full inventory and others where I would have to do a leave-check-enter again routine if I was to pickup only items of interest.
The limited inventory doesnt really make sense to me, its not like D2 where you would fill it with enchantments up to the point of leaving enough space to find the next most valuable upgrade.

Give it time, they will put it in the store
I mapped it to R3 on my PS controller, took a little while to get used to but it’s ok now. Not the best solution, but it definitely works.
I’m way more concerned with the auto targeting destroying the pots in down the hall than the elite right in front of me. lol

I think pickup priority is the real issue.
Objective items take priority over killing monsters, and gems take priority over other items.
At the very least, we should be able to assign priority.

It would be nice if there was a setting in the options screen to set the priority. Each person could customize their own play priority for the “A” button.

Dont get me started with this lol. And the right stick that does nothing!
Why do gems even drop? They are mostly worthless.

They can drop, they just shouldn’t take precedence over anything, or they should be auto pickup into a non-stash storage like the rest of the materials - but…THAT is an entirely different issue that will likely take a year to get a half-baked solution which results in a string of other issues.

Has anyone ever been short on gems? Lol. They may as well be sticks and leaves.
